Hook Up Your Bachelor Pad

Black leather represents a refined look for your bachelor pad.

As a man, your home is your castle. In turn, how you choose to decorate your bachelor pad can either make or break your social life. Hooked-up bachelor pads should convey manliness --- with a touch of style. Decorating your home begins with designing a living space that is both neat and functional. From there, you can add personal flair.

Instructions

1. Clean your apartment thoroughly. Your kitchen and bathroom are most important and should remain spotless. Use rags, scrubs and multi-purpose cleaners to treat exposed surfaces. Fold all of your clothes and organize them into drawers and closet spaces. Remember to vacuum the carpet regularly with powder to keep your place smelling fresh.

2. Stock your refrigerator and cabinets with snacks, treats and refreshments for the guests. Keep an assortment of pretzels, plain chips and ice cream on hand. Beverages, water, juice, soda, beer and wine can cover all situations.

3. Purchase a fashionable couch to serve as the centerpiece of your bachelor pad's living room. To keep things simple, a full black leather couch makes a solid statement. For contrast, you can arrange cherry wood tables around the couch. Consider keeping your tables, hardwood floors and curtains in all neutral shades for a tempered, sophisticated look. Place a few books and magazines on your coffee table for reading material.

4. Install a flat-panel television and entertainment center at the front of your living room. A glass and metallic entertainment center makes for a sleek look. The entertainment center should have space for a DVD player and video game console. Use the entertainment unit to showcase your collection of movies.

5. Set up speakers and sound systems in every room of your bachelor pad. Play instrumental music, if you don't have a feel for what is exactly appropriate to set the tone for the evening. Keep the heavier music for when you're more comfortable with your friends or guests.

6. Buy a queen-size bed for your bedroom. You don't want a bed that's too small, or a bed that takes up too much space in your bedroom.

7. Accessorize your home with plants, pictures or artwork. Each accessory should convey something about your personality, while also serving as a good conversation piece.

History Of Fels Naptha Soap

Fels Naptha soap is considered a household staple, with a myriad of uses for cleaning. The history of this famous soap is long and tangled, with near-failures of the manufacturers' business almost preventing the soap's invention and release to the market.

History

The Fels Naptha soap story begins in 1861 in the small town of Yanceyville, North Carolina. The local economy was floundering, so the townspeople devised a plan to create a distillery to boost the economy. They set to making a local brand of whiskey, and used the sour mash as feed for pigs. The problem was that the mash wasn't cooked all the way through and proved fatal to the pigs. A local man named Lazarus Fels stepped in, purchased the entire lot of pig carcasses and cooked the fat, combining it with lye to concoct bars of soap. The business had a slow start, so the Fels family moved operations to Baltimore and, in 1873, to Philadelphia.

Significance

Under the name Fels & Company, the Fels family continued to create and sell soap to the wholesale market. It wasn't until Samuel Simeon Fels, the youngest son of the Fels family, joined the company in the late 1800s that Fels & Company created its signature brand. In 1893, Fels & Company released a new type of soap product that incorporated naptha, otherwise known as benzene solvent, in its soap.

Effects

Fels Naptha soap was different from its predecessors. The active ingredient of benzene solvent proved to cut through grease and clean surfaces thoroughly. Throughout its century-long history, Fels Naptha soap has been used as a home remedy for rashes, a stain remover for grease-based stains, a base for homemade laundry soap and even a pesticide for worms that bore into dogwood trees.

Features

Fels Naptha is one of those products that has experienced little change in its appearance and properties throughout its history. Although it is currently made by the Dial Corporation, it still features a basic paper wrapper with an old-fashioned logo. The soap is yellow and longer than most bars of soap. It resembles laundry soap more than body soap.

Warning

Although many people have used Fels Naptha soap on their hair, scalp and skin, it is not intended for bathing use. The active ingredient is an irritant to the eyes and skin. In addition, the Department of Health and Human Services has identified high concentrations of benzene, which is also found in some plastics, rubbers, synthetic fabrics and solvents, as carcinogenic to human beings (see Resources below).

Troubleshooting A Bosch Shx45m05uc Dishwasher That Will Not Drain

You can add forgotten, last-minute pots and pans to the dishwasher.

The design and placement of the control panel on Bosch's SHX45M05UC model dishwasher may differ from the controls you have experienced using other dishwashers. Water can remain at the bottom of the dishwasher after you open the door to stop or interrupt a cycle. Standing water that has already been mixed with food waste and other matter can cause your machine to sour and emit odors. You only need to follow a few extra steps to get the dishwasher to properly drain water. If that does not work, you can troubleshoot other drain-related issues.

Instructions

1. Pull the dishwasher door open, slowly and carefully. Open the door just wide enough to see the control buttons that lie inside the door when it is closed, on the top-outer rim of the door panel.

2. Press and hold down the "Cancel" and "Drain" buttons for three seconds. Alternatively, some dishwasher models have buttons labeled, "Cancel" and "Reset."

3. Reclose the door. Wait and monitor the dishwasher while the cycle is completed, including draining. This should only take about one minute, compared to the "Regular Wash" cycle setting, which can last 119 minutes.

4. Open the door, again. Press the "On/Off" button. Do as you wish, such as starting a new cycle.

5. Check the drain hose, if the water is not pumping from the dishwasher. The drain hose should be located about 20 inches above the dishwasher's enclosure door, according to proper installation procedures. Make sure the hose is not kinked or clogged.

6. Check the kitchen sink's drainage as well for clogs and air gaps.

Replace A Thermador Oven Heating Element

Thermador manufactures many types of luxury-home appliances, including cooking, dish-washing and refrigeration products. Thermador ovens are available as both in-wall independent units and in a range combination -- and are electric or gas-powered. Gas-powered ovens use an open flame to provide heat for baking and broiling; electric ovens utilize two heating elements, one at the top of the oven and one at the bottom, to produce heat. Check A Thermal Fuse

Use a digital multimeter to check your appliance's thermal fuse

Most home appliances such as clothes washers, dryers or dishwashers utilize a safety feature known as a thermal fuse that disrupts the flow of electricity to your appliance's heating element in the event that your appliance begins to overheat. A tripped thermal fuse will render your appliance unable to produce heat until the offending thermal fuse is replaced. Because the inability to produce heat could be caused by a number of faulty parts, including the heating element, it's always a good idea to test your thermal fuse with a digital multimeter before attempting to replace it.

Instructions

1. Disconnect your home appliance from its power source before disassembling its components to check your thermal fuse. Make sure to disconnect any gas appliances from their gas supply as well before proceeding to the next step.

2. Determine the location of the thermal fuse in your home appliance. Thermal fuse placement can vary by appliance, brand or model. Remove the bottom toe or back panels to locate the thermal fuse in most residential washers or dryers. Look behind the bottom toe panel to locate the thermal fuse in most residential dishwashers.

3. Locate a 1-inch white plastic strip with two wires connected to it; this is your appliance's thermal fuse.

4. Pull gently to disconnect both of the wires attached to the thermal fuse.

5. Set your digital multimeter, also called an ohmmeter, to the Rx1 setting. A digital multimeter is an electronic device that is used to test the continuity of the thermal fuse in your appliance.

6. Touch the probes of your digital multimeter to the ends of the thermal fuse. Monitor the display on your digital multimeter to determine if your thermal fuse needs to be replaced. Note that a functioning thermal fuse will cause the needle of your digital multimeter to move to "0," while the needle will not move at all if your thermal fuse is faulty.

Disassemble A Drain Pump In A Ge Dishwasher

Disassemble a Drain Pump in a GE Dishwasher

The GE dishwasher has an important component called the drain pump, which is responsible for regulating water and detergent during the washing process. If the drain hose--which is connected to the pump--becomes clogged with residue and grime or is ruptured, it can effect the drain pump's ability to fill up or properly rinse during a cycle. Before dissembling the drain pump from its hose, contact GE for a replacement hose that matches your specific model.

Instructions

1. Power off the GE dishwasher and disconnect it from the electrical outlet.

2. Use a screwdriver to loosen and remove the screws from the dishwasher's kickplate, or the foot panel. If your GE model doesn't have screws on the outside of the kickplate, open the dishwasher's door to access and remove the screws from the base of the dishwasher.

3. Once the panel is removed, locate the drain hose below the lower spray arm. The drain hose will be connected to the dishwasher's drain pump. Situate a shallow pan below the hose to catch water spills. To disassemble the drain pump from the hose, pinch its wire clamp with needle-nose pliers and slide the clamp up the hose. Then, dislocate the drain pump from the hose.

4. Refasten one end of the new replacement hose to the pump's assembly, and the other end to the replacement hose's sink drain. Make sure that the connection is fastened securely.

5. Replace the clamps as they were secured before. Replace the lower panel. Reassemble the dishwasher's power supply before operation.

Clean Hard Water Marks In A Stainless Dishwasher Tub

Hard water is the term to describe water that contains an abundance of minerals, such as calcium and magnesium. While these minerals are safe to consume, they can create buildups in pipes and drains and will often leave a chalky white residue as the water evaporates. If your stainless steel dishwasher is coated in hard water stains, clean them up as soon as possible to keep the dishwasher running optimally. The process is simple and does not require any expensive commercial cleaning products -- just a few items you may already have in your cupboards.

Instructions

1. Wipe the dishwasher tub down with warm water and a rag.

2. Sprinkle baking soda across the bottom of the dishwasher.

3. Scrub the dishwasher with a soft-bristled brush or terry cloth following the grain of the steel. Do not go against the grain, as this can cause permanent scratches.

4. Spray or sprinkle the dishwasher with white vinegar. Use only enough to lightly wet the bottom of the dishwasher. The vinegar will immediately begin to fizzle when it comes in contact with the lingering baking soda.

5. Dampen a cloth with white vinegar, and scrub the tougher hard water stains. Again, go with the grain, not against.

6. Run the dishwasher on a quick rinse cycle with a cup of vinegar in the top dish rack and nothing else in the dishwasher.

Differences In The Ge Profile & Monogram

Monogram and Visibility appliances can be purchased singly or in packages.

Monogram and Visibility are two stigma of appliances manufactured by General Electric. Besides the shared parent company, the brands have a number of things in common, including a similar range of products and the prevalent use of tasteful stainless steel facades. However, given that Profile and Monogram are unique brands, there are enough differences between the two to warrant comparison. Significant differences include the range and intended use of products in the respective lines.

Product Range

General Electric's Profile brand has a larger range of products than company's Monogram brand, though Monogram has a greater depth of appliances available. Monogram products are designed exclusively for use in kitchens, while the products of the Profile brand include washers and dryers. However, the Monogram line has more products with a greater degree of specialization than does Profile. For instance, while both brands offer a full range of refrigerators, beverage centers and wine coolers, the Monogram line also offers double-drawer, fresh food and indoor/outdoor under-counter fridges and bar refrigerators with ice makers, while the Profile line does not.

Product Use

A major difference between the Profile and Monogram brands is the intended use of the products. Profile appliances are designed and built exclusively for in-home use. The Monogram brand, however, has products designed and manufactured for both domestic and professional-use products. Professional-use Monogram products, such as refrigerators and range tops, are made from more heavy-duty material than products intended for domestic use. Professional chefs were hired to consult in the design of Monogram products. No such endeavor was undertaken for the Profile line.

Installation

Products in both the Profile and Monogram brands are designed for easy home installation. Refrigerators, dishwashers, trash compactors and more are built to be fit into open spaces and attached to power and water supplies with ease. However, some products in the Monogram line can only be installed in areas designed specifically for the product. For instance, the Monogram brand offers a line of under-counter drawers equipped with refrigeration equipment for additional cold storage space. These drawers can only be installed in islands or counters made of materials that will not corrode upon continuous contact with cold and moist surfaces. A power supply is also required.

Defrost With A Magic Chef

Use a Magic Chef microwave oven to defrost frozen meats and vegetables.

The MC Appliance Corporation (mcappliance.com) makes various microwave oven models under the brand name Magic Chef, from small basic units ideal for dorm rooms to large, professional models meant for restaurant use or in professionally designed home kitchens. One feature that all models provide is the ability to defrost foods. All models can be set manually to defrost by chosen time length and defrost power level while some of the most advanced models offer pre-set functions specific to various types of frozen foods.

Instructions

1. Place the food item to be defrosted into a microwave-safe bowl or onto a microwave-safe drip plate. Add a splash of water to the bowl if defrosting casserole items containing pasta or rice ingredients, which can soak up fluids even during the low microwave defrosting setting. Items that have sauces or that need to remain moist should be covered with a lid or clear plastic wrap. This catches any unintentional evaporation and drips it back into the food or sauce. Frozen meats do best when left uncovered and turned periodically while defrosting to avoid partial cooking in hot spots.

2. Defrost by manually setting the power level and defrost time once the weight of the food item has been calculated. This is the basic defrost capability offered on most Magic Chef models. Choose a high or low defrost power setting and then immediately set a length of time for defrost. Press the Start button to begin defrosting. Meats defrost best when the lowest setting is used.

3. Quick Defrost uses a preset constant medium-level defrost power. Users choose time lengths corresponding to the number of times the Quick Defrost button on the key pad is pushed. Each button push adds a defrost time of one minute. Once set, begin defrosting by pressing the Start button. This is an ideal choice for defrosting frozen sauces and items which need stirring and close monitoring. Most Magic Chef microwave oven models offer this feature.

4. The Auto Defrost by Weight feature provides specific pre-set power and time settings. Different types of items have corresponding buttons allowing you to select different graduating weights with each push of the button. Once the item type (e.g., meat, frozen entree, vegetables) and approximate weight are chosen, defrosting can begin by pushing the Start button. The Magic Chef MCD1811ST and MC0165UB oven models are examples of larger, higher-end microwaves which have this feature.

My Frigidaire Dishwasher Fds251rj Won'T Pump Out Water

My Frigidaire Dishwasher FDS251RJ Won't Pump Out Water

Frigidaire brand dishwashers are available in various finishes and sizes and with different options, such as drying sensors, space organization systems, large silverware baskets, delay start options and delicate crystal wash, and many are Energy Star rated. Available for purchase online through Frigidaire and in many home retail, appliance and department stores, Frigidaire dishwashers, including the FDS251RJ should operate well with basic maintenance. However, if problems happen, such as if the dishwasher doesn't pump out water, some troubleshooting actions may be effective in solving the issue.

Instructions

1. Use only the recommended amount of dishwashing detergent, as oversudsing may leave water inside the tub after the wash cycle is complete.

2. Inspect the drain hose for kinks or obstructions. Clean and straighten as needed.

3. Run the garbage disposal at the sink nearest to the dishwasher and check the knock-out plug at the connection between the two. The knock-out plug should be removed.

4. Examine the water inlet valve and ensure it is properly connected and tightened, as this may be leaking water into the dishwasher if loose or improperly connected.

5. Listen to the dishwasher while functioning to see whether it is pausing between the wash and drain cycles and that the pump makes a clunking sound when pumping out water. If there are no pauses and no sounds from the pump motor, contact a service professional.

Keep My House Cold

Using an air conditioner is one of the many ways to keep your house cold.

Whether or not you own an air conditioner, there are several ways to keep your house cool during hot summer months. Making a few simple changes in your lifestyle and the way you use appliances can considerably reduce energy use in addition to cooling your home.

Instructions

1. Set the thermometer for the air conditioner as high as possible, and set the fan for the air conditioner on high, unless the weather is humid. Replace the filters on a monthly basis, and have the air conditioner serviced when necessary.

2. Turn on your fans and air conditioner. Set up a fan next to a window-mounted air conditioner to circulate cool air through the house.

3. Install white shades and blinds in your windows, and keep them closed. The white color will reflect the sun and keep it out.

4. Replace your regular light bulbs with fluorescent light bulbs, which burn cooler. Leave the lights off or keep them dim during daylight hours.

5. Check the caulk and weatherstripping around windows and doors to make sure that there aren't any leaks. If there are, replace the caulk and weatherstripping to keep cool air in and hot air out. Close your fireplace damper for the same reason.

6. Paint your roof a light color or replace your old shingles with light-colored ones to reduce the heat your house absorbs.

7. Reset your water heater to 115 degrees. Use less hot water by limiting use of the dishwasher and laundry machines and taking showers rather than baths.

8. Avoid using appliances and electronics which generate heat, such as TVs, VCRs, stoves, ovens and computers. When cooking food, use the microwave instead of the oven or stove whenever possible.

Write Off A New Dishwasher On Your Taxes

Purchasing a new dishwasher is not likely to reduce your taxes.

Tax deductions and tax credits change to reflect certain behaviors that the federal government wishes to encourage. Beginning in 2009 with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the government encouraged taxpayers to purchase energy efficient appliances for their homes in exchange for a tax credit. The appliances, such as dishwashers, have changed each year. In addition to energy efficiency tax credits, there may be other ways to deduct the cost of a new dishwasher.

Energy Efficiency Tax Deduction

Though dishwashers used to be eligible for a tax benefit, they were not eligible for the energy efficiency tax credit as of the date of this article's publication. This credit has changed from year to year and has covered the costs or a portion of the costs for certain energy efficient appliances like heating, ventilating and air conditioning units or geothermal heat pumps. The credit is typically structured as a tax credit equal to a percentage of the cost (usually 30 percent) up to a stated limit.

Home Improvements

Though not a direct deduction, a new dishwasher will save you money on your taxes when you sell your home. Home improvements are added to the amount that you paid for your home and together is your basis in your home. The basis is subtracted from the amount for which you sell your home and you are taxed on that difference -- the income earned from the sale of your house. This becomes extremely important if the income made on the sale of your house exceeds the maximum exclusion amount, which allows you to exclude up to $250,000 of the gain from the sale of your house in 2011.

Business Expense

If you run a business from your home and your dishwasher is exclusively used for that business purpose, you may be able to take a deduction as an ordinary and necessary business expense. If, however, you use the dishwasher for personal use, it will be very difficult to justify this as a business expense. If the dishwasher is considered a business asset or start-up cost, you may need to capitalize, rather than deduct, the cost of the dishwasher.

Claim

For home improvements to increase the basis of your house, the Internal Revenue Service suggests keeping a log of improvements with their costs. In addition to the log, you should keep receipts in case the IRS questions the basis of your home the year in which you sell it. Depending on whether you are able to claim a deduction or if you are required to capitalize the dishwasher expense, it will be reflected differently on your tax return or your company's tax return.

Pros & Cons Of Double Glazing

Double glazing is the process of reinforcing the glass or plastic panes of doors or windows. Double glazing involves using two layers of glass or plastic panes to shore up the windows and doors. Many benefits come from this process, though double glazing also has its downsides. Here are the pros and cons of double glazing

Added Security

Most home break-ins happen either through the doors or the windows. The use of double gazing increases the difficulty for an intruder. It increases the amount of time the intruder would need to break into your home. After breaking the first layer, a security alarm could be triggered. The intruder may not have time, nor presumably the inclination, to break the second layer once the security alarm is blazing.

Better Insulation

One of the biggest advantages is that double glazing increases the insulation of your home significantly. Less heat or air would be allowed to penetrate into or out of the home. This means less heating and air conditioning cost for the home. Openings and cracks along the windows makes it harder to warm or cool a house. Double glazing also offers additional protection from bad weather and storms.

Noise Reduction

Double glazing helps to reduce outside noise. Outside noise could be so distracting and disturbing even to the point of interrupting sleep, particularly when one lives in noisy neighbourhoods. Double glazing would offer some help in this area.

Cons of Double Glazing

One of the disadvantages of double glazing comes from its inability to stop heat coming from the sun from penetrating into the house. For instance one can see sun rays inside the home if sun is shining directly on the double-glazed windows. Tinting the outer window may appear as an option, but that would totally block sunlight from entering the house altogether, leaving the home darker.

House Appearance

Double glazing has another disadvantage of altering your home's aesthetics. After its installation, the home owner may not like the altered new view of their house. This problem is more particular to older homes than newer ones. This problem nevertheless may be less significant when one considers the cost saving.

Repair A Burnedout Electric Motor

If an electric motor operates at too high a voltage, excess current flowing through the windings can cause them to become hot and burn out. While it is normally not practical to repair small, direct current (DC) motors that have burned out, other motors can be repaired by rewinding.

Short Circuit

When a motor burns out, a short circuit occurs in the windings and the motor ceases to turn. You can test for a short circuit by checking the resistance of the windings with an ohmmeter; a reading of 0 ohms (Ω) indicates a short.

Winding Removal

The first step in rewinding a motor is to remove the old winding. Commercially, this is done by baking the stationary part of a motor in an oven at 650 degrees Fahrenheit for several hours.

Rewinding Coils

The new windings are wound on a coil winding machine, under the supervision of a technician, who controls the tension, layering and number of turns. The newly wound coil is dipped in epoxy varnish and, once again, baked in an oven to complete the process.

Attach Laminate Countertops To A Cabinet

New countertops can add value and beauty to your home. Laminate countertops are a budget- friendly option to update a kitchen. However, having your laminate countertops installed by a professional can cost a pretty penny. By learning install laminate countertops yourself you can save money and have a beautiful kitchen.

Instructions

1. Remove the old countertops. Turn off the water to your sink and detach the plumbing. You may need to use a knife or razor blade to cut the caulk along the edge of the sink before removing it. Lighter sinks can be left in place and removed with the old countertops. Older countertops may be screwed, glued, or nailed in place. You may have to use a little muscle to remove the old countertops.

2. Measure the length and width of the lower kitchen cabinets. Take these measurements to your home improvement store for help in ordering the right counter. It is important to keep in mind that if your new countertops are shorter than your current countertop the backsplash you may need to repair or redo the old backsplash.

3. Screw build-up strips to the bottom kitchen cabinets so the edges overhang. When installing the new countertop, screw through the strips into the countertop. Make sure the screws you use to drill through the buildup strips are not long enough to go completely through the top of the laminate countertop. To make this easier, predrill 3/16-inch holes for the mounting screws. Not all countertops need buildup straps. Some use metal L-brackets, which can be screwed on per manufacturer directions.

4. Seal the gap between the laminate countertop and the backsplash with a bead of silicone. Dip your finger into some rubbing alcohol, then use your finger to smooth out the silicone.

5. Attach an end cap. With laminate countertops you are likely to have an exposed edge. You will need to purchase an end cap for each exposed edge. Warm the end cap in the oven or use an iron to melt the glue and press it into place on the edge of your counter. Make sure all of the edges are covered. After the cap has cooled, use a router to carefully remove any excess from the end cap.

Frigidaire Dishwasher Error Codes

Frigidaire Dishwasher Error Codes

The dishwasher is a modern convenience that many homeowners are not willing to live without. Rather than spending hours at the sink, busy homeowners can simply rinse dishes, place them in the dishwasher, and turn on the machine. Modern dishwashers such as the Frigidaire brand display error codes when something is wrong, so you can call a service technician right away, rather than trying to figure out the problem yourself when the dishwasher breaks.

Codes Related to Vents

Frigidaire dishwashers display one of two error codes if there is a problem with the ventilation system. A code of "uo" means the vent is open, while "uf" stands for vent failure. If your Frigidaire dishwasher displays either of these codes, have your service representative check the vent and vent fan.

Switch and Sensor Failures

Frigidaire dishwashers display a number of codes related to switch or sensor failure. Most of these codes require a service call, because your service representative may have to replace a part. "Er," "CL," and "rA" refer to switch failures, while "hs" and "tU" refer to sensor failures.

Non-Error Codes

Some codes do not usually indicate technical problems, although you should always have your technician check the unit if you are in doubt. If the power to the unit fails, the dishwasher displays "PF." You can usually clear this code by opening and closing the dishwasher door. "HO" means the water isn't warm enough, and the dishwasher is waiting for it to heat before proceeding to wash dishes. You can run the faucet prior to starting a new cycle to ensure water is hot enough. Finally, "LO" means the dispenser is low on rinse aid solution, and needs to be refilled.

Washing Soda Substitute

Water alone is not a very effective cleaner for fabrics or other household items. Water needs the addition of soap or detergent to loosen the dirt and suspend it in the water away from the fabric, dishes or other surface being cleaned. An effective grease- and dirt-loosening addition to water is washing soda. Washing soda is often a key ingredient in recipes for homemade laundry detergent, dish soap, bar soap and many other cleaning formulas. Unfortunately, washing soda is not as easy to find as it once was.

Soda Ash

Washing soda is the chemical sodium carbonate, which is also known as soda ash. Soda ash is most commonly used to raise the pH in swimming pools because it is alkaline. Soda ash can be found at any store that sells pool supplies. Sometimes it will be marketed with a commercial name, so be sure to read the label to make sure the ingredient is soda ash. The soda ash used for swimming pools can be used as a substitute for washing soda with the same results.

Baking Soda

Do not confuse sodium carbonate, washing soda, with sodium bicarbonate which is baking soda. They are not the same and will not perform the same. Washing soda is much stronger, with a pH of 11 (neutral is 7), while baking soda has a pH of 8.1. This means washing soda will work better than baking soda on tough cleaning jobs. But it also means washing soda is much more caustic than baking soda, and care and protection (gloves) should be taken when handling it. As a washing soda substitute for general cleaning and laundry soap recipes, baking soda will be effective for lightly soiled items, but will not clean heavily soiled items as well as washing soda.

When baking soda is heated to a temperature above 140 degrees Fahrenheit, it will convert to washing soda. You can make washing soda from baking soda by heating it at 350-400 degrees for an hour or two. The baking will release water and carbon dioxide, converting the baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to the chemical washing soda (sodium carbonate). After the "new" washing soda has cooled, store it in an airtight container to keep moisture from re-entering the powder.

Other Options

You may wish to substitute the product OxiClean for washing soda because, along with other ingredients, it does contain sodium carbonate. Borax can also be a substitute for washing soda, but like baking soda, it will not be as strong an agent for cutting grease and dirt.
