4. Place a 2-inch layer of washed 1-inch gravel in the bottom of the trench. Lay a 4-inch perforated drainpipe on top of the gravel. If the pipe only has perforations on one side, place it with the holes pointing downward.

5. Determine the slope of the drainpipe with a level. Ideally, it should slope downward at the rate of 1 inch or more for every 8 feet of pipe. Add more gravel under the pipe to adjust the angle if necessary.

6. Fill in the trench with 1-inch gravel. Stop near the top of the trench, leaving just enough room so that when you replace the sod it will be level with the surrounding grass. Lay the rest of the landscape fabric over the top of the gravel and arrange it so that none will stick out once the drain is covered.

7. Replace the sod or fill in the top of the trench with soil. Be sure not to cover the outlet of the pipe, so that the water can drain freely.

The water supply is hooklike capable the dishwasher by attaching the dishwasher water hosepipe to the sink faucet. In older models, the aerator on the kitchen sink faucet needed to be removed, but in newer models, the dishwasher hose connects directly to the sink faucet. The drain hose for the portable dishwasher is set in the sink. The power supply comes from the nearest electrical outlet.

Utility Connections

One of the first things you need to determine if you want to turn a portable dishwasher into a built-in is whether you have the proper utility hookups. For a dishwasher to operate properly, you will need a hot and cold water supply, a sewer inlet and an electrical outlet. Depending on the electrical codes in your area, the dishwasher may need to be on its own separate circuit. If there is not an outlet in the area where you want to place the dishwasher, contact an electrician to have one installed for you. If you do not have dual water supply valves installed for the hot and cold water supplies beneath the sink, have a plumber install them or install them yourself.

Cabinet

In addition to all the hardware hookups you need to convert a portable dishwasher to a built-in dishwasher, you'll need a cabinet in which to install the dishwasher. Before moving the portable dishwasher into the cabinet, measure out the dimensions of the portable dishwasher, including the width, depth and height, to determine the amount of cabinet space you will need. Cut the cabinet space to size, if needed, using a jigsaw or handsaw. Sand down any rough edges with a piece of sandpaper or a file. You may need to remove the dishwasher's wheels and cabinet to get it to fit correctly inside the opening.

Installing a Portable Dishwasher

Move the portable dishwasher over to the cabinet area. Wrap the threads on the water supply inlets with plumber's tape. Connect a hose from the hot water supply valve and the cold water supply valve to the portable dishwasher inlets. Run the hose from the dishwasher to the tailpiece or garbage disposal beneath the sink. Secure the end of the portable dishwasher hose to the sewer inlet with a hose clamp. Plug the dishwasher into the newly installed electrical outlet.
