The Job Description Of A Dish Washer

A dish washer is an entry level position at restaurants and other food service businesses.

A dish washer is an employee whose primary job is to clean dirty dishes in restaurants and other facilities that prepare food. A dish washer is generally an entry level position that is ideal for those new to the workforce. Dish washing positions can be used as a starting point for those interested in the food service industry.

Job Duties

Dish washers are responsible for ensuring clean and sanitary dishes and flatware.

The job duties of a dish washer generally consists of loading dishes into a dish washing machine and operating and unloading the machine. Hand washing of dishes in commercial food service is rare but does still happen. Dish washers might be assigned to scrape larger portions of food from dishes before loading into the dish washing machine, stack dishes for wait staff, and assist with general kitchen clean up.

Job Requirements

A high school diploma or GED is becoming a common requirement for a dish washer.

Most dish washers learn their specific job duties on the job from an experienced employee. Dish washers in most jurisdictions need to acquire a food handler certification before starting work. The requirement that a dish washer has a high school diploma or GED is becoming more common as well. The ability to interact well with others, especially while under stress, is an important skill for a dish washer.

Earnings and Benefits

Dish washers are not generally well paid.

As dish washers are entry level positions, the position is not well compensated. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that in May 2008 the average hourly wage of a dishwasher was $8.19. Most dish washers work part-time and are not often offered benefits such as health insurance or vacation and sick leave. One benefit of working as a dish washer is that work schedules are often flexible allowing an employee to work around another job or to attend school.

Employers

Amusements parks are just one location where a dish washer might work.

Dish washers are commonly employed by restaurants but dish washers might work in a wide variety of settings. Hospitals, nursing homes, casinos, bars, convention centers and other businesses that prepare food for patrons are possible employers of dish washers. Many dish washers and other service staff at large facilities, such as sports stadiums and vacation resorts, will be directly employed by a vendor under contract with the facility.

Advancement Potential

Dish washers are well positioned to move up in position.

While the chances of greatly increasing earnings as a dish washer are not great, a dish washer can often use the position to advance within a company. Dish washers often will observe and at times assist with food preparation enabling them to learn new skills. Kitchen staff generally experience a high level of turnover and a hard working dish washer who gains new skills can expect to move up to positions with greater responsibility and pay.

Fix A Dishwasher Soap Trap

Fixing a dishwasher soap trap reduces the amount hand-washing necessary.

You can fix a dishwasher soap trap that is not opening using a few common household items. Soap traps are the small compartments that are loaded with liquid or powder soap before the dishwashing cycle is begun. Failure to release or fully open during the cycle leaves dishes rinsed but not washed. Get the best possible cleaning job from a dishwasher by making sure it has access to the full supply of soap on every wash cycle.

Instructions

1. Locate the soap trap inside the dishwasher and open it to investigate the condition of the latch. It may be necessary to pry the door of the soap trap open with the end of a screwdriver.

2. Scrub away residue from all parts of the soap trap with the plastic bristles of a toothbrush that has been dipped in vinegar. A thick layer of soap scum and lime scale may keep the latch from moving, prevent the seal from closing completely or keep the spring from pushing the door open.

3. Set the cup of vinegar on the top rack of the dishwasher and run the appliance through a cycle on its hottest setting. Leave the soap trap open so that it gets rinsed out during the cycle.

4. Open the door of the dishwasher and press the door to the soap trap closed. If the soap trap stays closed, try to trigger the latch to open by twisting the nob through the clean cycle. Digital models may not allow you to trigger the soap trap to open without running a full cycle.

5. Check the condition of the cleaned soap trap if it is still having problems. The latch itself may be broken or the spring may be missing or have lost its tension. In instances where parts of the soap trap are broken or damaged, it may be necessary to order replacements from the manufacturer and install them according to the owner's manual.

Clean Leather Caps

You can clean a leather cap well without spending money at a dry cleaner. You wouldn't want to do so with a beaver-pelt Resistol cowboy hat, but you can wash a low-cost cap like a clothing item. Some techniques exist for cleaning leather gloves and handbags and they also work for caps. Even some clothing retailers, like TravelSmith, offer washable leather items. Washing will work for both smooth leathers and suede.

Instructions

Machine Washing

1. Fill the machine with cold water. Set your machine to a medium-sized load, which will allow the cap to move freely for a better clean.

2. Add mild detergent like Woolite. Use only half the recommended amount for a medium load--you don't want to leave chemicals in the leather. If the cap has an odor, add a quarter cup of ammonia to the washer. Ammonia will kill any mold or mildew, but the smell of ammonia will wash away completely.

3. Wash your cap by itself, in a lingerie bag (a net bag with a zipper or pull). Alternatively, tie off or pin the hat inside a white pillowcase. Remove the hat immediately after the spin cycle. Lay it down on dry, white towels.

4. Work the cap back into shape every few hours with your hands. When it is nearly dry--which may take two days--wear it for about an hour. This helps it dry more quickly and ensures that it retains its shape.

Hand Washing

5. Repeat the above steps in a sink or vessel filled with diluted detergent, and, optionally, ammonia.

6. Move the cap around by hand for about 10 minutes. Rub the sweatband and liner (if the cap has one) with the detergent and a clean sponge or washcloth.

7. Rinse completely, using a shower head or sink sprayer. Lay out and dry the cap as described above.

Home Recipe For Cleaning Carpets

If you have ever rented a carpet steam cleaner, you know the cleaning solution that you buy for it is expensive and could be full of chemicals. Powdered carpet cleaners and stain-removing commercial products are costly, too. Plus, they all leave some residue in your carpet. You can make your own cleaning solutions from common household items that are as effective as the commercial product.

Steam Cleaner or Shampooer

Instead of commercial soap products, use 1 cup white vinegar mixed with hot water in the carpet steamer or shampooer. The vinegar will not leave a soapy residue, which attracts dirt. In fact, the vinegar will probably remove the excess soap that is in your carpet from your last steam cleaning or shampooing. For dirtier carpets, you can increase the amount of vinegar to water, but do an additional cleaning with just hot water to remove the excess vinegar from your carpet if the mix is at least half vinegar. Vinegar also will remove odors.

For your home carpet shampoo machine, you may add a tablespoon of liquid soap, either dish or laundry, to the vinegar mixture. You should do an extra cleaning of plain water after this to remove the soap.

Dry Recipe

Before applying any dry carpet cleaning product or mixture, use a stiff broom and sweep your carpet. This will get the fibers in the carpet standing up. Then vacuum your carpet thoroughly. By doing this, you remove quite a bit of the dirt that was trapped in the fibers of the carpet.

Sift together until blended, 1/4 cup cornstarch, 2 cups baking soda, 4 or 5 crushed bay leaves and 1 tablespoon cloves. Sprinkle this mix over your carpet and leave it there for several hours or overnight, then vacuum. The cornstarch and baking soda absorbs greasy dirt, and the bay leaves and cloves leave your carpet smelling fresh.

Stain Removers

Keep a spray bottle of equal amounts of vinegar and water for a spot stain remover. Spray the stain and blot with a paper towel to remove many stains. For greasy stains, first sprinkle cornstarch or baking soda on the stain. After an hour or so, vacuum up the powder. The powder will absorb much of the grease.

This is a good all-purpose homemade stain removers, but test it first on an inconspicuous spot of the carpet. Named "Patty's Recipe" for red wine stains, it was tested by the University of California wine department and found to be one of the best cleaners, and is used an a variety of stains, including chocolate, blood and grass. Mix a half and half solution of dish detergent, such as Dawn, and hydrogen peroxide. Spray this on the stain and watch it disappear. The soap loosens the stain and the peroxide dissolves it.

Clean Wooden Kitchen Tables

Kitchen tables
that are made of wood do a good job of absorbing all sorts of grime and dust, making them harder to clean than a plastic-based tabletop. The trick is to use a cleaner with a citrus oil base and to use gentle yet firm pressure on the table as you clean it.

Instructions

Clean Wooden Kitchen Tables

1. Take a dry, soft cloth and use it to wipe the table of any food particles or immediate dust. If the wooden table has a specific grain direction, wipe in the same direction of the grain. Shake the cloth out and set aside. Fill a bucket about halfway with warm water, adding a few drops of mild dish soap as it fills.

2. Submerge the sponge in the warm soapy water and squeeze it out. Use a circular motion to wipe down the entire length of the table, occasionally dunking the sponge back into the water solution and ringing it out again. When the entire table has been wiped down, dump out the bucket and rinse out all of the soap residue. Rinse the sponge of any soap as well. Fill halfway again with just water and use the sponge to wipe away the soap from the table. Use a dishtowel to dry the table.

3. Use a citrus oil-based cleaner or dusting spray to dampen the soft cloth and use firm but gentle swipes to wipe the table down in small sections at a time. Make sure there is enough cleaner on the cloth to soak into the table, applying the cleaner directly to the table if necessary. When you have finished wiping the table down, it should appear shiny from the cleaner. Let the table soak in all the cleaner before you return any centerpieces or place mats.

What Is The Job Description For A Pantry Cook

A pantry cook, sometimes called a garde manger or a salad station line cook, is responsible for the cold appetizers and dishes that come off a restaurant line. The pantry cook is often the entry level position on the kitchen line; from here, cooks can work up to hot stations, lead line cook or eventually sous chef. According to Payscale.com, pantry cooks average $9 to $11 per hour in 2010.

Preparation

Before service begins, pantry cooks prepare any elements needed for service, such as salad dressing, sauces, sandwiches or spreads. Pantry cooks follow the restaurant recipes when preparing these menu items. Pantry cooks also set up the line station for service by bringing items from the walk-in refrigerator to the line station, washing salad greens and gathering plates and bowls.

Service

During lunch or dinner service, pantry cooks wait for tickets to come in and then plate the food the diner has ordered. The pantry cook must work in conjunction with the other line cooks so that all of a table's food comes out at one time and must be able to handle several orders at a time. Pantry cooks may prepare salads, cheese plates and other cold appetizers.

Schedule

Pantry cooks may work full-time or part-time and generally work eight-hour shifts, though some positions offer overtime hours. Cooks generally work either a lunch or evening shift, though some large hotels offer overnight pantry cook opportunities. Many cooks work during the weekend and may not have two days off in a row if they work full-time.

Physical Condition

Pantry cooks will stand on their feet for the duration of the shift and must be able to bend, turn, twist and move readily. The best cooks have good fine motor skills, attention to detail and can work well under pressure. Pantry cooks should be able to lift at least 50 pounds in the course of their job.

Additional Responsibilities

Pantry cooks may need to inventory salad station items on a nightly, weekly or monthly basis and report the inventory to a sous chef or more senior cook. Pantry cooks may prepare or plate additional dishes, like desserts or hot appetizers. Pantry cooks occasionally need to work off-site at a private party or function.

Kill Roaches In Appliances

Kill cockroaches that hide in your appliances.

Roaches like warm, tight spaces, making the small crevices in appliances attractive to these pests. Roaches sometimes enter houses by riding in appliances. During infestations, they often use appliances as hiding places, especially in moist areas. Some common appliances where you can find roaches include stoves, refrigerators, washing machines and dishwashers. You can't reach the small spaces in appliances and you can't spray insecticide in appliances where you store or process food and eating utensils. However, some methods exist for you to kill the roaches.

Instructions

1. Inspect behind, under and inside appliances using a flashlight and a small mirror. Look for living or dead roaches, shed exoskeletons, egg cases and droppings that usually resemble grains of pepper. Otherwise, enter a dark room, turn on the lights and mentally note the roaches' hiding places as they scamper to hide.

2. Vacuum roaches and their debris from the appliances and discard the vacuum cleaner bag outside. This reduces roach populations and cleans the appliances. Scrub on, around, underneath and behind appliances, making sure to remove all roach droppings because they can attract other roaches.

3. Puff boric acid dusts under and behind large appliances such as the refrigerator or washing machine to form a thin layer on surfaces. When a roach walks over the layer, boric acid sticks to its body. The boric acid becomes ingested when the roach grooms itself, slowly killing the roach from inside. Boric acid works as a stomach poison for the roach, but it is safe for people and pets. Other dusts include silica and diatomaceous earth, which destroy the waxy coating of the roaches, drying them out and killing them.

4. Place infested small appliances such as toaster or radio in individual plastic bags, seal the bags and place them in the freezer overnight. The roaches in the appliances will die from the cold.

5. Place sticky traps of jar traps near appliances where you have seen the roaches. Although they often hide in appliances, roaches will eventually come out to forage. Traps will help reduce roach populations, but usually can't eliminate the infestation on their own.

6. Place insecticidal baits near appliances where the roaches have eaten before. Baits take several weeks to reduce populations because some will directly eat the bait, while others will eat the dead roach bodies or the droppings. Don't use pesticides or household cleaners near the baits because they can keep roaches away from the area. Active ingredients of roach baits include abamectin, boric acid, fipronil, hydramenthylnon and sulfluramid.

Magic Chef Rice Cooker

You can cook more than just rice in your rice cooker.

Magic Chef Appliance Corp., a division of the Whirlpool brand, produces a range of small home appliances including microwaves, compact refrigerators and rice cookers. A rice cooker uses steam to prepare any variety of rice with consistent results. The automated nature of the machine makes rice cooking simpler and avoids overcooking by continuously monitoring steam levels within the cooker throughout the cooking process. If you regularly prepare rice alongside other dishes, a rice cooker can assist in streamlining your kitchen tasks.

Basic Operation

The Magic Chef rice cooker essentially consists of an inner pot, where you cook the rice, which fits within the larger rice cooker body. An electric element heats water to create steam, which permeates the rice within the inner pot. To cook rice, you simply add the uncooked, washed rice and the corresponding quantity of water. For best results, smooth the rice's surface before starting the cooker. Closing the lid of the rice cooker and plugging it in will automatically start the cooking process.

Precautions

Before using the rice cooker, check that the outside of the inner pot is clean and dry, without any residue or traces of water. Check the heating plate element as well, wiping off any residue. Fit the inner pot snugly within its housing, making sure that it comes into contact with the heating element. Turn the inner pot clockwise several times to check that it's securely in place. Listen for a "click" when closing the rice cooker's lid. When plugging in the cooker, first insert the plug into the cooker, afterward connecting it to the power outlet.

Cleaning

To maintain your rice cooker in good working condition, follow safety precautions when cleaning the unit. Unplug the cooker and allow it to completely cool before cleaning any surfaces. Once the unit is cool to the touch, remove the lid, inner pot, steam tray and dew collector. Soak them in lukewarm water and wash with a soft, non-abrasive sponge and a mild detergent. To clean the outer housing of the cooker, use a moistened cloth.

Uses

The Magic Chef rice cooker, as its name indicates, is intended for preparing various types of rice. However, many rice cooker enthusiasts, including the film critic, Roger Ebert, have discovered the possibility of cooking other foods in basic rice cookers, such as the Magic Chef's straightforward model. According to Ebert, who wrote the book "The Pot and Use It," there are recipes involving the rice cooker for such varied dishes as oatmeal, grits and jambalaya. When adapting a Magic Chef rice cooker to prepare other dishes, follow all manufacturer's instructions to avoid any damage or risk of injury.

Clean The Inside Of A Stainless Steel Dishwasher

How Do I Clean the Inside of a Stainless Steel Dishwasher?

Stainless steel dishwashers are one way to accentuate the look of your kitchen. Many stainless steel dishwashers are also stainless steel on the inside rather than plastic. The simple process of washing the dishes is often all that is necessary to keep the dishwasher clean inside. There are some things you can do to clean the inside of a stainless steel dishwasher if you begin to notice odors or see hard water stains on the inside side walls.

Instructions

1. Open the dishwasher door and remove both of the dish racks so you can access the spray arms. The lower rack usually pulls straight out, while the upper dish rack may have a clip on the front of the tracks that you must remove to pull out the rack.

2. Inspect the upper and lower spray arms thoroughly around the nozzle holes. Fill a small container with white vinegar, and dip a toothpick into the vinegar. Insert the vinegar end of the toothpick into each of the nozzle holes that have sediment build up.

3. Find the food filter on the bottom of the dishwasher near the back wall. Remove any food or debris that is on top of the filter. The filter is a large screen that prevents food and debris from getting inside the drain.

4. Clean the door seal with a damp cloth. Do not use soap on the door seal. Dampen a cloth in warm water and rub the door seal down to remove any film or build up.

5. Place the dish racks back into the dishwasher. Fill an 8 oz. glass with lemon juice and place it on the lower dish rack. Fill the detergent cup with dish detergent, and close the dishwasher door. Run the dishwasher through a regular cycle to get rid of hard water stains and freshen the dishwasher.

The Best Chipresistant Dinner Plates

Dinner plates should be durable and stylish.

Dinnerware can be expensive. Buying dinner plates that are easily chipped and require frequent replacement is not only time-consuming, it is also a waste of money. Investing in better quality dinner plates does not have to mean a higher price. This can prevent the hassles that come with frequently replacing plates of lesser quality.

Correlle

Correlle dinnerware, first introduced in the 1960s, remains a popular choice by reviewers due to its durability and resistance to breakage. Correlle's myriad of styles were given high marks by Good Housekeeping, Best Discount Dinnerware Reviews, BestCovery and Cooking.com. In addition to their durability, Correll dinner plates were given high marks due to their ability to withstand frequent washings and resistance to fading. Correlle dinner plates are microwave- and dishwasher-safe and come in a myriad of colors and designs. Correlle offers matching cups, saucers and bowls and can be purchased in complete service sets for four or more.

Zak Callaway

Good Housekeeping was impressed by the modern look of the dinner plates offered by Zak Callaway. Available in a variety of edgy colors and designs, Zak Callaway plates are also durable and affordable, with the cost of plates averaging $5 per piece. Results obtained by testers at Good Housekeeping report that plates by Zak Callaway stood up well to multiple dishwasher washes and resulted in no fading or chipping. Plates tested even resisted chipping or breaking when subjected to numerous intentional drops onto wood and slate surfaces. Testing showed that the only scratching that occurred was when the plate was intentionally scraped with a sharp knife.

Max 1 Dinnerware

Another favorite that achieved nods of approval by reviewers at Good Housekeeping was Max 1 Dinnerware. While only available in white, Max 1 Dinnerware offers upturned sides that make holding the dinner plate easier when walking or standing. The plates were deemed to be chip- and break-resistant, standing up to multiple rounds in the dishwasher. While testing showed that Max 1 Dinnerware did scratch when intentionally cut with a sharp knife, the plates resisted chipping and cracking and proved a good value at an average of $10 per plate, according to reviewers.

My Dishwasher Did Not Work After The New Faucet Was Installed

If a dishwasher does not work after a faucet install, check a few typical problems.

If your dishwasher did not work after a new faucet installation, you are not alone. Often after a new installation, all the right parts and valves do not get installed or turned back on. Frequently the homeowner is the person to figure out there is a problem instead of the installation professionals.

Supply Line Valve off

The dishwasher draws water from the same pipe as the faucet, and the appliance is connected via a supply hose on the bottom of the water supply valve. However, each one has a different valve. Your installer will turn off both the faucet's valve and the dishwasher's valve when installing the faucet, for precautionary reasons. If, after they finished installing the faucet, the installers forgot to turn the valve back on, your dishwasher will not work. Simply turn the valve on, and test out the dishwasher to see if this is the problem.

Electrical Breaker off

Dishwashers require electricity to operate and, during your faucet installation, one of several things may have cut the power to your dishwasher. The installer might have turned off the breaker to the dishwasher to avoid a potential electric shock. You may notice there is no power to the dishwasher or any of the countertop appliances if this is the case. To solve this problem, just open the breaker box, and turn on the dishwasher's breaker, which should be labeled "dishwasher" on the circuit box.

Dishwasher Cord Unplugged

Another possible reason your dishwasher is not working is the plug. A dishwasher has its own plug to receive electrical power and usually it is plugged into a receptacle near the sink. Installers may unplug the dishwasher instead of turning off the breaker to prevent an electrical shock and, in many cases, they forget to plug it back in. Correcting this problem is easy; just look for the plug cord in the sink cabinet or behind the dishwasher; and plug it back in if you notice it is unplugged.

Drain and Hot Water Supply Issues

The dishwasher drains water through the same drain line as the faucet, and, during the installation, your installer likely removed this drain line to access the faucet lock nuts. However, if they did, the dishwasher would still work; it just wouldn't drain into the drain line but into your sink. The installer might have shut off the supply valve on the dishwasher itself, however. This valve is located on the side of the dishwasher and, if it is off, your unit will not receive any hot water to clean your dishes.

A Kenmore Dishwasher 665 Leaks Above The Motor

The Kenmore 665 series, also called the Ultra Clean Dishwasher, is available in a number of models and designs that provide them the power to be along with nearly any kitchen. The motor on these home appliances is beneath the cabinet. If you see that water is seeping previously mentioned the motor, it's probably the effect of a bad cabinet seal. Changing one of these simple components is not past the grasp from the DIYer.

Kenmore 665 Operation

The operation and cycles from the Kenmore 665 models act like other dish washers. A port valve opens to permit water within the dishwasher cabinet. Once within the cabinet, water mixes using the cleaning soap inside. A pump moves this soapy mixture via a sprayer arm where it oral sprays all around the dishes inside. A pump then pumps the used dishwater. The procedure repeats, only this time around just with water with no cleaning soap. Once all of the this water pumps from the Kenmore, an electric heating element activates to assist rapidly dry the bathroom.

Working Securely

Prior to trying to repair a leak inside your Kenmore 665, make certain that you simply switch off the electricity towards the dishwasher in the primary circuit breaker. Take away the fuse around the circuit or turn the change to the off position. Wipe up water that could have released round the dishwasher. Switch off water supply for that dishwasher where it's connected, usually beneath the nearest sink.

Disconnecting Components

Take away the kick panel from beneath the Kenmore washer door by helping to loosen the screws holding the panel in position. You'll now get access to both pump and also the motor. Disconnect the drain hose from the rear of the pump by helping to loosen the hose clamp and tugging the hose from the pump. Disconnect the wiring harness in the motor by tugging the plastic wiring harness socket with some needlenose pliers.

Seal Removal

Open the dishwasher door. Take away the lower basket. Pry the cap from the sprayer arm and employ an outlet wrench to release the bolt. Accomplish the sprayer arm and also the plastic fixtures around the cylinder beneath. Make use of the socket wrench to release the bolts holding the circular pump cover in position beneath the sprayer arm. Lightly raise the sprayer arm and pump cover. The motor and pump can come out attached underneath, along with the rubber seal.

Seal Alternative

Press a brand new seal into position round the opening at the end from the cabinet. Lower the pump cover and sprayer arm set up into position on the top. Secure in position using the bolts. Underneath, reunite the wiring harness for that motor and also the drain hose. Switch the sprayer arm and secure.

Testing

Restore the energy and water towards the Kenmore washer. Operate a short cycle and appearance beneath the machine to make certain it is not seeping. As needed, tighten the bolts towards the bottom from the cabinet. Switch the kick panel and secure using the screws. Switch the lower dishwasher rack.

German Cooking Appliances

A stainless steel kitchen range is a favorite kitchen appliance.

German companies are often noted for their expertise and ingenuity in the manufacturing realm. Many cooking appliances available in the U.S. and around the world have been engineered, if not manufactured, in Germany. They go by names most would recognize, including AEG, Bosch, Miele, Siemens and Neff. These companies make ovens, ranges, cooktops and small appliances for cooking, as well as other residential appliances, such as washers, dryers, vacuum cleaners and dishwashers.

Miele

In 1899 Carl Miele and Reinhard Zinkann started a company to build cream separators. From that beginning, many other time-saving appliances were born. Ninety percent of Miele's appliances are still manufactured in Germany. In the cooking world, Miele makes cooktops and ovens utilizing either gas, electric or induction methods. Standard oven features are touch control pad, multi-lingual display, metric/English conversion, convection, residual heat cooking, infrared broiling and self-cleaning. AutoRoast, Intensive Bake and Sabbath are trademark modes of the Miele oven.

Bosch

Bosch has joined with the Siemens company to form the Bosch and Siemens Home Appliance Group making it the third largest manufacturer of home appliances in the world. The Bosch company was started in 1886 by Robert Bosch, a German engineer, and established as the first U.S. subsidiary in 1906. Ranges offer convection heating, a power burner (16,000 British Thermal Units- BTUs), a simmer burner (500 BTU), five burners, a hidden bake element and a large capacity oven with 5.0 cubic feet. Bosch also offers separate ovens and cooktops, ventilation hoods, microwave ovens and warming drawers.

AEG-Electrolux

Begun in Germany in 1887 as Allgemeine Electricitats Gesellschaft, which means General Electric Company, AEG later joined with Electrolux. Since 2005 the company uses the twin name logo and the mantra "Perfect in Form and Function" to tout its products. AEG-Electrolux offers multi-functional ovens, including a steam cooking mode, digital and auto-cooking and Pyroluxe TM cleaning. Some ovens offer as many as eight functions. This manufacturer also produces double ovens, compact ovens and side opening ovens, as well as cookers, coffee machines, microwaves, warming drawers and vent hoods.

Neff

The German appliance manufacturer known as Neff is a family run company founded about 1855, according to White Box Deals, Manufacturer's Guide. They are best known for their cooking appliances and are highly regarded throughout the United Kingdom. Their basic function range features Circotherm TM which draws air from the oven cavity, heats it up and forces it back into the cavity thereby requiring little or no preheating. It also offers a defrost feature and a full surface grill. The cooktop, known as hobs (burners) are bought separately and combined resulting in great flexibility. Deep fryer, wok, barbecue grill, and induction hobs are available, as well as an extra large gas hob. Ceramic, electric-sealed plate or gas hobs are choices.

Donate Used Kitchen Appliances

Donate your old appliances to your favorite charity.

If you are replacing some of your kitchen appliances and not sure what to do with the old ones, you can donate them to a local charity. As long as you donate your used kitchen appliances to a charity that is listed with the IRS, you will get a tax deduction for the donation. Your deduction is based on the fair market value of the used appliances, which the IRS defines as the price you would get for the item if you sold it in the current market.

Instructions

1. Assess the kitchen appliances that you want to donate to verify that they actually work. Charities typically only accept kitchen appliances that are in good working order.

2. Check on the IRS website to see that the charity where you are donating is listed. If listed, it means that they are eligible for tax deductible donations. You can search by name, city or state. If you do not have any charities picked out, the GE Appliances website has a list of national charities that accept used kitchen appliance donations.

3. Determine the fair market value of used appliances by looking at the Salvation Army Appliances Donation Value Guide online or by checking the sales price of similar items in your local newspaper classified ads.

4. Contact the charity where you want to donate so that you can make sure they accept your item. Some charities may not accept any used kitchen appliances or may only accept some types of used kitchen appliances.

5. Transport your appliances to the donation center or arrange for a pickup. Some charities, such as the Salvation Army, will come and pickup your used appliances that you want to donate. Other charities, such as Goodwill, requires that donations be taken to their donation center.

Use The Oster Quick Freeze

An Oster "Quick Freeze" refers to an Oster Ice Cream Maker. The machine constantly stirs a canister filled with ice cream ingredients while surrounded by ice and salt that rapidly freezes the mixture. Salt is necessary as it will draw heat away from the ice cream mixture while it melts the ice, creating the cold temperature needed to freeze the mixture. Make sure you wash all of the parts except for the Ice Bucket and Motor Base before beginning to make ice cream.

Instructions

1. Prepare ice cream mixture according to your recipe and keep in the refrigerator until needed.

2. Place ice bucket on the motor base.

3. Pour ice cream mixture in freezing canister then secure the lid on top. Place the canister in the ice bucket and make sure it is straight and centered.

4. Add one cup of cold water to the bucket, followed by a 1-inch layer of ice. Add 1/3 cup of salt on top of the ice. Continue to add layers of ice and salt until the bucket is full. Add an additional one cup cold water over the top layer of the ice and salt.

5. Remove freezing canister lid and insert paddle into the canister and add mixing cover to close the canister.

6. Place ice bucket cover over ice bucket and freezing canister. Make sure that the paddle is engaged with the center feed on the cover. Secure the latches on the ice bucket to the notches on the lid.

7. Plug the machine into the wall socket and turn the power switch to "On". Allow the machine to run for 18 to 25 minutes or until the mixture in the freezing canister reaches the top. As needed, replace the melted ice in the bucket by adding it through the ice feed corners. This can be done while the machine is running.

8. Turn the machine off and unplug from the wall after the ice cream is made.

9. Harden the ice cream. Remove the freezing canister from the bucket by first removing the ice bucket lid and mixing cover. Pack the ice cream down and place the freezing cover on top and place the canister in the freezer for a few hours. You can also harden the ice cream by leaving it in the machine. Place cloth towels over the top of the unit for insulation and set aside for a few hours.

Clean Nuwave Oven Pro'S Powerhead

A dirty NuWave powerhead blocks the infrared light to increase cooking times.

The powerhead on the NuWave Oven Pro is the only part of the appliance that is not dishwasher safe. All the digital components and the infrared lights that heat the oven are contained within the powerhead unit. Regular use can coat the NuWave Oven Pro's powerhead with a layer of grease and food debris. You can clean the powerhead by hand in just a few minutes while the other parts are finishing up in the dishwasher.

2. Wet a nonabrasive sponge in hot water. Wring the excess water back into the sink to leave the sponge only slightly damp.

3. Wipe down the outer surface of the powerhead including the cord and digital display. Rinse and wring out the sponge frequently until the entire unit is clean. Dry the cleaned powerhead with a clean kitchen towel.

Clean Cast Iron Furniture

Cast iron furniture is expensive in comparison to aluminum or plastic models, as cast iron furniture lasts much longer. It also is extremely heavy. Most cast iron furniture pieces are used on patios since they cannot blow over in heavy windstorms. Proper cleaning will help these pieces retain their durability and prevent rust, which can easily spread once is has taken hold. Cleaning cast iron furniture takes very little time and does not require expensive materials.

Instructions

Routine Cleaning

1. Mix a solution containing 1/4 cup of mild detergent with 1 gallon of lukewarm water in a plastic cleaning bucket. Swish the solution with your hands to mix it thoroughly. Dampen a cleaning sponge in the cleaning solution and shake out the excess water.

2. Wipe down the piece beginning at the top and working toward the bottom. Use an up and down motion to get in crevices and intricate detailing. Wet the sponge as needed to keep it moist but not dripping.

3. Rinse the piece with a second bucket of cool, clear water. Work from the top of the furniture piece to the bottom. Use a clean sponge that is very wet to make sure all the cleaning solution is wiped away from the piece.

4. Dry your cast iron furniture with a soft, lint-free cloth or towel. Turn the towel over once it begins to get a little wet so you are constantly drying with a dry section. Dry the underside of the piece of furniture as well as any standing water on the ground around your item.

Maintenance and Care

5. Inspect your cast iron furniture for signs of rust, especially if it is being used outdoors. Mark any areas you find with a piece of colored chalk.

6. Use a heavy grit sandpaper to sand away the rust stains you had marked with chalk. Use a wire brush to reach rust in tight areas. Brush away residue from sanding and scraping with a feather duster.

7. Use touch-up paint to cover the sanded areas. Apply the paint with a detail paintbrush starting at the center of the bare area and feathering the paint out to the edges. Allow this paint to dry for four to six hours and apply a second coat.

8. Wax the furniture after all the rust spots have been covered with paint. Place a thick glob of car wax onto a soft applicator pad. Grasp the pad at the back by making a cupping shape with your hand.

9. Apply the wax to the furniture by moving the pad in a circular motion. Add more wax to the pad as needed. Continue until the entire piece is covered with wax, and then allow it to dry to a dull haze.

10. Buff the wax with a soft cloth to remove the haze. Turn the cloth as you buff so that you are constantly using a clean section. Rub until the haze has completely disappeared.

What Are The Dangers Of Ingesting Dishwashing Detergent

Poisons under the sink, such as dishwashing detergent.

Ingesting dishwashing detergent happens more often than you think, especially to small children. When toddlers learn to crawl, they can reach the cupboard that contains the detergent. Small children are the most likely to make the mistake of confusing a bottle of dishwashing detergent for a baby bottle. This is especially disturbing because of their small size, amplifying the toxic effect. Certain ingredients used in dishwashing detergent can be poisonous. According to the Riley Hospital for Children, "Every 30 seconds, a childhood poisoning occurs in the United States. In 1998, more than 1.1 million unintentional poisonings among children ages 1 to 5 were reported."

Potassium Carbonate

The MSDS sheet for potassium carbonate states,"Causes respiratory tract irritation. May be harmful if swallowed. Causes eye and skin irritation and possible burns. May cause severe digestive tract irritation with possible burns." This means that if it is consumed in large amounts it can chemically burn your digestive tract. If consumed do not induce vomiting, instead drink two to four glasses of milk and call poison control.

Sodium Carbonate

According to Medline Plus,"Sodium carbonate is usually not very toxic. However, if you swallow very large amounts, you may have symptoms. In this rare situation, long-term effects, even death, are possible if you do not receive quick and aggressive treatment." This is especially true if an infant or small child consumes the dishwashing detergent. If your child consumes ANY amount of sodium carbonate take them to the emergency room immediately.

Sodium Hydroxide

Sodium hydroxide is a chemical that has a very basic pH.The last place you would expect a poisoning from this substance is in a nursing home. According to Terry Law Firm, "A man with Alzheimers who lived at the Homewood Residence at Delray Beach, an assisted living facility in Delray Beach, Florida, managed to sneak past caretakers and consume dishwasher detergent containing sodium hydroxide. Immediate medical attention was not taken. Eighteen hours later he died from severe burns to his esophagus. If an elderly patient can manage to sneak past medical supervision and consume dish detergent so can your child.

Troubleshoot A Bosch Water Heater

If your Bosch water heater is not heating water, it needs attention. Your gas utility company may offer to make a free house call to help solve problems with a gas water heater's burner, but it's wise to do some troubleshooting yourself because you may be able to solve the problem without much difficulty. There are a number of steps you can take to troubleshoot your Bosch water heater. Always refer to your Bosch water heater user manual for information on the location of parts.

Instructions

1. Check to make sure the water heater switch in your circuit breaker box is on.

2. Turn the temperature setting on the water heater to a hotter setting; it may be set too low.

3. Replace the fuses in the control unit on the water heater. There should be two spare fuses in the lower access panel of the control unit. Take out the old fuses and put the new ones in their place.

4. Look for the cold-water inlet connection on the right side of heater. The water valve should be turned on so water is flowing into the water heater.

5. Check the water pressure in the heater by turning off the cold water supply to the water heater by turning off the valve. Open the hot water taps in your house and wait for ten minutes; after this time, there should be no water flowing. If they continue to flow, you may have a water flow crossover in the system that needs correction by a plumber.

6. Make sure that the temperature sensors are firmly connected to the cold and hot water pipes; the hot water sensor is on the horizontal hot water pipe as it exits the water heater. The cold-water sensor is on the horizontal pipe that goes into the heater.

7. Check for obstructions in the water line. Unscrew the aerators from your faucets and clean any debris from them.

Water Conservation Tips & Uses

Water scarcity is becoming a serious concern worldwide.

Climatologist and author Simon Gear states that potable water is a "rare and valuable commodity." In a 2008 report for Circle of Blue, Keith Schneider highlights the scarcity of water as an increasingly dangerous threat throughout the United States. Saving water should be near the top of your list of ways to live a green lifestyle.

Conscious Use

The next time you leave the tap running while brushing your teeth or shaving, collect that water in a container or plug the drain so you can see how much you would have wasted. Gear suggests this knowledge may make you more aware and prevent you from wasting water in the future. You can also calculate your water footprint using National Geographic's water footprint calculator (see Resources).

Flush Less

Flush less by only using your toilet to dispose of human waste.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the average American household flushes away 24 gallons of fresh water per person per day. You can reduce this amount by using low-flow toilets, which the EPA estimates can reduce your household water consumption by up to 18 gallons per day. A second, simpler solution is to place a brick in your cistern to reduce the storage capacity of your toilet and save water every time you flush.

Shower, Not Bath

A bath uses about 70 gallons of water, contrasted to 10 to 25 gallons for a 5-minute shower, according to the EPA. To further benefit from showering, install a low-flow shower head, which can reduce your household fresh water consumption by up to 12 percent.

Full Cycle

Your dishwasher can actually save energy and water, but only if it's fully loaded, Gear says. A full dishwasher gives maximum benefit since it uses the same amount of water regardless of the load. The average dishwasher uses up to five times less water than hand washing, according to the U.K.-based special interest group Waterwise.

Indigenous Plants

Plants adapted to your local weather patterns, in particular the annual rainfall, will require less watering in the garden.

Drip Irrigation

Lawn irrigation accounts for approximately 30 percent of the household water consumption for the average American home, according to the EPA. Sprinklers lose a large portion of this water to evaporation and drift. Gear recommends a drip irrigation system that will dribble a small amount of water directly onto the soil around your plants and save you "huge amounts of water." Larry Stein and Doug Welsh, in a paper for the Texas A&M Department of Horticultural Sciences, state that drip irrigation can reduce water consumption by up to 60 percent compared to traditional watering methods. If installing drip irrigation seems excessive, use a watering can to reduce your outdoor water consumption by up to 60 percent in a small garden, Gear recommends.

Troubleshoot A Frigidaire Electric Range

Frigidaire manufactures free-standing and slide-in electric ranges available through retailers like Sears, Lowe's and Best Buy. Features of Frigidaire electric ranges include electronic displays, self-cleaning modes and automatic locking. If your range fails to operate properly, you can troubleshoot the problem before calling for service.

Instructions

1. Check that the range is getting power. Replace any blown household fuses or reset the circuit breaker if it has tripped. The plug needs to be firmly inserted into the wall outlet.

2. Press the "Cancel" key if an "F" error message appears on the display of your range. You will have to re-enter any settings you previously selected.

3. Adjust the placement of the electric coils if the surface elements fail to heat. Remove the coils when the oven is turned off and seat them into the terminals so that they are aligned correctly.

4. Check to make sure the self-cleaning mode is finished. During the self-cleaning cycle, all controls on the range are locked, including surface elements, for safety reasons. Select the "Cancel" key if you want to end the self-cleaning mode early.

5. Check the range to make sure it is level. Place a level on the center rack when the appliance is turned off. If the range is not level, adjust the legs by turning them clockwise or counterclockwise.
