Which Washers & Dryers Qualify For A Tax Credit

Washer and Dryer tax credits are available to consumers.

When seeking to purchase a new washer and dryer, many consumers have questions as to whether the purchase will qualify them for a tax credit. Consumers should be aware of the different types of taxes and, therefore, different types of tax credits. There are federal tax credits, that do not apply to household purchases, and there are tax credits to your state taxes for purchasing these household efficient items to do apply.

Federal Income Tax Credits

There is no federal tax credit that applies to the purchase of a new washer and dryer. There are, however, two types of energy efficient tax credits set forth by the Internal Revenue Service, neither of which apply to the purchase of most household appliances.

The Residential Energy Efficient Tax Credit applies only to improvements homeowners make to the "building envelope" and for the purchase of high-efficiency heating, cooling and water heating equipment. The Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit applies to purchases of solar water heat, photovoltaics, wind turbines, fuel cells, geothermal heat pumps and other solar electric technologies. Washers and dryers are not included within either of these categories of federal tax credits.

State Income Tax Credits

Although the purchase of a washing machine and clothes dryer will not make consumers eligible for a federal income tax credit, consumers who purchase select energy-efficient household appliances may be eligible for a state income tax credit. Each state has different requirements for state income tax credits. Consumers should review the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency prior to purchasing a new energy efficient household washing machine or clothes dryer to see if the item qualifies.

Federal Tax Credits for Manufacturers of Energy-efficient Appliances

Although a federal tax credit is not available directly to consumers of the purchase of an energy-efficient washing machine or clothes dryer, a federal tax credit is available to the manufacturers of some appliances. Eligible appliances include some Energy Star qualified dishwashers and some Energy Star qualified washing machines. Although consumers do not benefit directly from this federal tax credit, they may benefit from increased availability of these appliances and possible price reductions from the manufacturer.

Power Company Rebates

Some power companies give rebates to their customers for purchasing energy-efficient appliances. Consumers should check with their power company to see which purchases qualify. The participating power companies for each state are listed in the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency. Consumers will find that some power companies offer rebates for the purchase of certain dishwashers, washing machines, clothes dryers, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and even CFL light bulbs.

Pump Problem

The whistling sound problems may be caused by food, debris or a chip of glass that is stuck inside the pump and preventing the impeller from moving freely. Safety Recall

Older models of Bosch dishwashers may overheat due to a faulty electrical connection. In January 2009, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Bosch Home Appliance recalled 476,500 models of Bosch and Siemen dishwashers. The dishwashers were manufactured between May One thousand nine hundred ninety nine and July 2005. These units may present a fire hazard and consumers are advised to stop using them immediately. Contact your Bosch appliance dealer or the company website for a free repair if your unit is affected.

Build A Model Arm

The arm, with its strength and mid-point joint, is one of the more fascinating parts of the human body. To get a better idea of how its muscles work together to give it strength and flexibility, you can build a model using some household items.

Instructions

1. Glue the ball to the end of a toilet paper tube. Most of the ball should be on the outside of the tube.

2. Poke a hole in the tube with the pushpin, about 3 centimeters from the open end of the tube. Poke another hole in the same spot on the opposite side.

3. Poke holes on opposite sides of the other tube, about 5 centimeters from one end.

4. Unbend the paperclips, and slide one into each tube through the holes made by the pushpin, leaving equal amounts of the paper clips on both sides of the tube. Fold those sides of the paperclip up toward the closer end of the tube.

5. Select one of the toilet paper tubes to work with. Hang a rubber band from each protruding end of the paperclip. Then use the masking tape to secure the two rubber bands to the paper tube.

6. Place the two tubes together with the ball in the middle. The paper clipped ends should be facing away from the ball. Make sure that one end of each paperclip is facing up while the other end of the paperclip is facing down.

7. Stretch the rubber bands that are taped to the paper tube down the model, and hook them to the corresponding paperclips on the other tube. Tape the rubber bands in place on the second tube with masking tape.

8. Tape the top rubber band in place 5 centimeters below the ball on the glued paper tube. Separate the sides of the rubber band so that it wraps around the ball, then tape it to the ball. The lower part of the "arm" should have the tube with the ball glued into it.

Cleaning & Maintenance Of Tappan Dishwashers

Dish washers really are a common sight in kitchen areas.

Dish washers save your time. Rather than needing to clean each dish manually, you can just put the dishes within the dishwasher, push a few buttons and leave. Tappan dish washers are created with a company founded by W.J. Tappan in 1881 and then bought by Electrolux. Like other home appliances, Tappan dish washers need frequent maintenance and cleaning to ensure that they're working correctly. Fortunately, you are able to clean Tappan dish washers having a couple of household products.

Instructions

Washing the Filter

1. Let your Tappan dishwasher to awesome completely before washing the filter.

2. Remove the low rack and look for the filter, beneath the lower rack toward the leading from the dishwasher, and take away it. The low rack only will snap unnatural, permitting you to definitely take it off.

3. Fill a sink with hot, soap and water. Submerge the filter in to the water and scrub lightly having a sponge. Make certain to totally clean the filter. Rinse with awesome water.

4. Switch the filter back to the dishwasher. Attach the low rack by nipping it back to place.

Cleaning within the Dishwasher

5. Fill a bucket with warm water. Give a couple of drops of liquid dish cleaning soap and blend completely.

6. Submerge a clear sponge within the mixture and wring the excess liquid.

8. Saturate a gentle cloth within the mixture. Lightly clean the bathtub gaskets, user interface and outdoors from the dishwasher using the cloth.

9. Wipe the products dry having a soft towel.

Fix The Power Light On A Bosch Dishwasher

A Bosch dishwasher typically has an LED display across the top front of the dishwasher door to let you know that the unit has power and to indicate what wash cycle the unit is in. If any LED lights, including the power light, are not functioning, there are a few quick steps you can take to hopefully fix the problem before you have to call a repair technician.

Instructions

1. Check to make sure the dishwasher is plugged in. While this may seem obvious, an electrical plug can sometimes wiggle out of the outlet without your knowledge, particularly if your dishwasher has an imbalance or rocks otherwise.

2. Inspect your circuit breaker box to be sure a circuit has not been tripped. If the circuit is tripped, it should be flipped to the "off" position or the neutral position. Simply flip it back the other direction to "on." In most circuit breaker boxes, the circuits are labeled so you can easily tell which one corresponds to your dishwasher.

3. Locate your dishwasher owner's manual and find the fuse diagram. If you are unable to locate the dishwasher owner's manual or a fuse diagram, you will have to check all the dishwasher's fuses.

4. Unplug the dishwasher.

5. Examine the fuses to see if you have blown a fuse. In order to check the fuses, you will need to remove the front door panel. The fuses are located behind the panel. Visually inspect each fuse to see if the small wire is still intact within the fuse. A blown fuse will have a split wire instead of an intact wire.

6. Replace any blown fuses by pulling the old fuse out and snapping a new fuse back in place.

7. Put your dishwasher door panel back together, plug in the appliance and see if the lights work properly. If not, you'll need to call a repair technician if you can't live with a burned out power light on your Bosch appliance.

Make A Water Glass From A Wine Bottle

Your favorite bottle has the built-in cylinder shape of a water glass.

Whether you admire the graceful arc in the thumbhold under your favorite wine bottle, or just want a way to reuse (or disguise) that growing pile of wine bottles you can't bring yourself to throw out, making a water glass may be the answer.

Instructions

1. Prep your empty bottles by removing labels, washing and drying.

2. A soft, beeswax toilet ring can hold the bottle in place on the turntable.

Prepare electric turntable by building up a base on it out of beeswax, children's toy putty or similar flexible material that will cover the center nipple and hold the bottle base in place while it rotates.

3. Cover the beeswax with plastic wrap so the bottle can be centered but won't stick.

4. An electric turntable keeps a consistent speed for even flame-cutting.

Center a clean bottle upright on the turntable. Press the bottle down into the plastic-covered ring to create a depression that will hold bottle centered during the slow-speed rotation (stick to 33 - 1/3 speed). If you find it needs more stability, remove the plastic wrap and press the bottle directly into wax.

5. Some sort of clip or "third hand" device holds the torch steady and close to the bottle.

Using a jeweler's "third hand" or similar pedestal clip, suspend the micro-torch so its flame is 1 inch or less from the bottle and is at 4 inches high for a tumbler or 8 inches for a tall glass. (Practice the flame distance on a few extra bottles first to get the optimum speed for no breakage.) Using a freestanding torch with a long enough nozzle to reach the bottle (while it sits on a stationary surface to the side of the turntable) makes this even easier.

6. This tiny torch has a simple flip switch to turn on the flame.

Turn on the turntable and then the flame, sit back, and wait for the telltale "pop" that tells you the bottle top and bottom have separated. (Some micro-torches are self-lighting with just a click of the switch; others require you to turn on the gas knob and light with a flame when you hear the gas.) Remove the bottle top and discard.

Lower Electric Bills

With the increasing costs of fuels and everything else, people need to find ways to lower the monthly bills, including the electric bill. This is one bill that you may have some control over, depending on your usage. There are actually quite a few things all household members can do to lower your electric bills. Part of it is rethinking how you do things. Some of it involves remaining diligent and focused on the goal of a lowered electric bill. Part is training everyone in the house to follow suit. The added bonus is these efforts will help the environment too.

Instructions

Lower Electric Bills

1. Make sure to raise your thermostat in the summer and lower it in the winter. Even better; if you can turn it off altogether, at least part of the time, you will save even more.

2. Make sure everyone in the house turns off lights when they leave a room. Opt for lower energy burning light bulbs throughout your home.

3. Turn off unnecessary things like the coffee maker when it is not in use or the printer when you don’t use it often. Those tiny lights on each item add up to wasted energy over a period of time.

4. Try doing things you normally do in the light in the dark, like going to the bathroom in the middle of the night or taking a shower or bath. The shower or bath are actually quite relaxing in the dark.

5. Use the dishwasher and other kitchen appliances sparingly. If you insist on using a dishwasher, just run it for the wash and rinse cycles, then open it and turn off the dry cycle. Leave the door of the dishwasher open and let the dishes air dry.

6. Try using the microwave for cooking some of your hot meals instead of the stove or oven. In the summer try making more meals that involve the use of fresh grown produce eaten without cooking, like salads or fresh cut veggies with dips.

7. Try hanging high temperature drying items like towels out on a clothes line to dry instead of running the dryer for those.

8. Keep doors closed between rooms. The heat or air conditioning will stay in the room better. Make sure you close outside doors quickly to keep the heat or cool from escaping.

9. Get new multi-pane windows installed or if you can’t afford that, recaulk old windows that feel drafty.

10. Find alternate ways to keep cool in the heat besides running the air conditioner all the time. Get a floor or oscillating fan instead or use an overhead fan. Drink lots of cold fluids and do your most energetic home jobs in the cooler parts of the day.

11. Run the washer and dryer at off peak hours.

12. Install an attic fan that can be turned on when the temperatures are excessively hot inside and beginning to cool off outside. The attic fan will suck in the cool air from the windows, vent out the hot air and ventilate the house quickly so you don’t have to run the air conditioner to get it cool when you get home from work. It only has to run a short while to be effective.

13. Use a wind up clock or your cell phone alarm instead of an electric alarm clock.

14. Set your computer to go on low power mode if you walk away for awhile or turn it off altogether if you aren’t going to use it for awhile.

What Is An Autoclave Machine

Medical equipment needs to be sterilized to prevent the spread of infection before it can be used. An autoclave is a device that sterilizes medical equipment. Autoclaves are also used by tattoo and piercing artists to sterilize needles. The autoclave developed as an extension of the research done with pasteurization processes.

History of Sterilization

Between 460 and 377 B.C. Hippocrates cleaned surgical instruments by pouring boiling water over them.

Between 1729 and 1799 Italian biologist Lazzaro Spallanzani discovered that bacteria died after being heated in sealed glass flasks for 30 minutes.

On April 20, 1862 Louis Pasteur conducted the first series of tests in which liquids where heated in pressurized containers to sterilize them. This became known as pasteurization and is still used to preserve milk, juice and other foodstuffs.

Charles Chamberland, who worked with Pasteur to develop pasteurization, developed the autoclave in 1879.

What is an Autoclave?

In its most basic form the autoclave is a pressure cooker. Water is heated in a pressurized environment to create steam. Using pressure makes it possible to heat to higher temperatures with less energy. Autoclaves are usually made of steel and have various configurations for removing air prior to pressurization. Downward displacement autoclaves use gravity to remove air. Steam pulsing autoclaves use pulses of steam along with pressurizing and depressurizing to reach optimum pressure. Vacuum pump autoclaves suck air out for pressurization. Superatmospheric autoclaves are a combination of steam pulsing and vacuum pump techniques.

How Does an Autoclave Work?

An autoclave sterilizes items by heating them with steam to a very high temperature. Some common temperatures at which autoclaves operate are: 115 degrees C/10 p.s.i., 121 degrees C/15 p.s.i., and 132 degrees C/27 p.s.i. (p.s.i.=pounds per square inch). The temperature, pressure and time of operation depend on the degree of sterilization needed.

What Does an Autoclave Kill?

An autoclave using standard settings can kill most bacteria, spores, viruses and fungi. However, most prions are not killed by an autoclave using standard settings and some organisms can survive at temperatures above 120 degrees C. Most doctor's offices, tattoo parlors, dentist offices and other places where instruments might come in contact with contaminants have a small autoclave on site for disinfection. Hospitals use larger autoclaves that look similar to industrial dishwashers to sterilize many items at once.

Heat kills microorganisms by causing vital proteins to coagulate. The proteins stick together causing fatal damage to the microorganism. An autoclave cooks microorganisms in the same way a pressure cooker cooks food, but at a higher temperature. Autoclaves use steam instead of dry heat because steam can more effectively transmit heat to the microorganisms.

Other Uses for Autoclaves

An autoclave can also be used in the manufacture of chemicals that require pressure and high heat, such as dyes.

Century Wavemaster Facts

Wavemaster is the name of a series of heavy bags for boxing and martial arts training marketed by Century Martial Arts. The classic Wavemaster is a portable free-standing unit that can be set up for use in indoor and outdoor gyms. Its relative low cost (generally less than $200) makes it an affordable addition to a commercial gym or a home workout area.

Structure

The striking area of the Wavemaster bag is made of 4-inch-thick foam in a durable vinyl covering. Some models are marked with as many as 10 scoring zones. The article "Wavemaster Punching Bags" (see Resources) cites this as a beneficial feature because it helps fighters pinpoint their strikes and develop different effective combinations. The unit's hollow circular base is make of flexible polyethylene. The user fills the base with water or sand for stability.

Free-Standing Advantage

For those assembling home gyms, the greatest advantage of the Wavemaster is its free-standing design. Most heavy bags require mounting on ceilings or walls, using brackets, springs and chains. This usually involves major construction, and the mounting is permanent. Mounted bags often send vibrations through small buildings when they are struck, meaning a fighter has the potential to annoy family members or shake pictures off walls during his workout. Because the Wavemaster is stabilized by its base, it can be quickly set up in almost any location without the support of a building rafter or stud. Adding to the convenience is the base's rounded shape, which allows a user to easily roll it to a different location without having to completely drain the base of its sand or water.

Height and Weight Adjustable

The Wavemaster has eight height settings, ranging from 47 inches to 68 inches. This allows users of different sizes and ages to reach the striking zones and get the greatest benefit from their workouts. The hollow base can be filled to the desired stability weight. A stronger kicker or puncher may need to fill the base to its maximum of 270 pounds to keep it steady, whereas a youthful martial artist may need to fill it only halfway.

Disadvantages

Customer responses on the Wavemaster website are generally positive. Some, however, have noted that, even with the base fully loaded, the bag tends to wobble and scoot across the floor when placed at its highest height setting. It was also cited as being unusually noisy when struck, and the upper-level height adjustments did not always hold in place during intense workouts.

Models

The Wavemaster comes in different designs and sizes, including the "Kid Kick" and "Kid Punching" models for youth, and the XXL model for taller fighters. The smallest model is the "Lil Dragon," designed for small children, which has a base capacity weight of 170 pounds.

2. Spray the answer to the cloudy glass table. Permit the ammonia to soak in to the glass for 5 minutes.

3. Make use of a micro-fiber cloth or paper towel to wipe the answer in the table. Beginning at one finish on the table, gradually come lower the table inside a thin, even stroke. Continue cleaning within the same vertical direction until all the liquid continues to be removed. When the ammonia appears like it's clearing the cloudiness, do this again before the cloudiness is taken away or forget about cloudiness has been removed. When the process was ineffective, make use of a different method.

Oil Jelly

4. Dip a paper towel or soft cloth into oil jelly. Use a thin, even layer within the cloudy glass table.

5. Permit the oil jelly to soak in to the glass for twenty-four hrs.

6. Spray a glass cleaner within the oil jelly. Make use of a soft cloth or paper to get rid of the jelly and clean the glass. Do this again if it's helping. If it's not helping, make use of a different method.

Denture Cleaner

7. Dissolve a denture tablet in water, following a manufacturer's directions for the quantity of water to make use of. Pour the contents right into a bottle of spray.

8. Spray the denture cleaner to the cloudy table.

9. Permit the cleaner to soak into the table for 2 to 5 minutes, for the way cloudy the table is.

10. Make use of a soft cloth or paper towel to get rid of the liquid in the table. Repeat when needed.

Vinegar

11. Mix equal parts water and vinegar inside a bottle of spray.

12. Spray the mix around the glass table. Let it soak in to the glass for fifteen to thirty minutes, with respect to the cloudiness.

13. Make use of a soft cloth or paper towel to get rid of the liquid in the table. Repeat when needed.

No Lights And No Turning From A Frigidaire Dishwasher

Depending on the model of your Frigidaire dishwasher, it will feature indicator lights to notify you of the machine's cycles. Most units also have rotating sprayer arms that spray water onto the dish racks as they turn. While malfunctioning indicator lights might indicate circuit board or bulb problems and a malfunctioning sprayer arm might mean equipment failure or dishes blocking the arm, both problems at once are far more likely to be a problem with electricity getting to the unit.

Correct Settings

Start by reviewing your unit's controls. Depending on your dishwasher model, your unit might not show any indicator lights when off. So if you haven't set the control correctly, the unit won't start either. Because controls can vary depending on your Frigidaire model, check your use and care manual for the instructions that apply to you. You can download your manual from the Frigidaire website if you don't have it on hand.

Electrical Plug

If you're certain you've put the correct settings into your Frigidaire dishwasher and you're still having the same problem, check that the unit is plugged in. If it's a new installation, the unit might not have been connected to an electrical outlet yet. Pull the unit out from under the counter it's installed under and check out the electrical connection.

Fuse or Breaker Problems

The next place to check is the fuse or break box. If a fuse is blown or a breaker is tripped, it's possible to have other electronic equipment working but your dishwasher isn't. Check the fuse or breaker associated with the outlet your unit is plugged into. If it's tripped, replace the fuse or reset the breaker to get it working again.

Calling for Service

If your problem is the controls or the electricity, it could be anything from a short in the unit's wiring, improper wiring or even be related to your home's electrical wiring. Remember that allowing anyone other than certified Frigidaire repair technician to work on your dishwasher can void any warranties on it. Call Frigidaire to set up a service call with a certified technician in your area.

Clean Etched Glasses In A Dishwasher

It can be cumbersome to follow an enjoyable meal by hand washing your fine china and expensive, etched glasses. You may have heard horror stories about fine china and glasses being broken in dishwashers. Hand washing gives you some peace of mind, knowing your glasses are being handled with care. However, if you have and use the appropriate settings, you can clean etched glasses in a dishwasher.

Instructions

1. Set the dishwasher to the "Delicate" or "China" setting. Set the dry setting to "Heat Dry."

2. Place your etched glasses on the top rack. Most top racks are designed for glasses and there is less chance of them getting broken there.

3. Leave an empty glass space between each of your etched glasses so that if they rattle around or move in the dishwasher, they won't bump against one another and break.

4. Add regular dishwasher liquid or gel (not powder) to the dishwasher per the manufacturer's instructions on the dishwashing liquid. Dishwashing powder tends to leave a residue on etched glasses, so it's best to use a liquid or gel.

5. Add a rinse agent to the dishwasher per the manufacturer's instructions to keep spots from forming as the glasses dry.

6. Turn the dishwasher on, and let it run through the complete cycle before removing the etched glasses.

Clean A Diecast Car

Clean a Diecast Car

There are probably lots of men out there who collect die cast cars. These little replicas of their favorite classic cars and dream cars are fun to look at and own. They are usually kept in a nice display cabinet, but even the best cabinet in the world will let in dust. This is why keeping your die cast car clearn is so important. (If damaged during the cleaning process, the car will be worthless. So, the key is to be careful while handling them.)

Instructions

1. Take the die cast car out of it’s cabinet. To remove, grasp it across the roof. Your thumb should hold one side and your forefinger should hold the other. Be careful not to bump the rear view mirrors or antenna.

2. Prepare a small pan or sink full of warm water and add a couple drops of dish liquid. Gently dunk the die cast car up and down a few times. Do not swish it side to side because the force of the water may break the mirrors or antenna from the car.

3. Wipe the die cast car with a very soft cloth, if grime or dust is still present. Run warm water from your faucet at a very gentle force. Hold the die cast car under the water to rinse away detergent residue. Turn the car side ways so the flow of the water runs through the interior of the die cast car.

4. Blot the car gently with a very soft towel. Always be careful not to snag any of the small parts. With the car sitting on a towel to catch drips, use a blow dryer, set on low, to finish drying the car. Be sure to get inside the interior to dry up all of the moisture.

5. Wax the car once it is completely dry. Use your favorite car polish and apply it according to instructions. Apply the polish to the die cast cars body panels just like you would an actual car. Wipe the polish off with a very soft cloth. The polish will help preserve the paint and repel dust.

Find Bargain Home Appliances

Finding bargain home appliances requires not just a keen eye, but also an equally keen awareness of when and where to go for the best deals. Here are some tips on what to look out for when it's time to replace or upgrade your home appliances.

Instructions

1. Start with the phonebook. If you flip through the vendor pages under "appliances," you should find listings for local appliance centers and warehouses and exclusive dealers, including rent-to-own stores. Plan to visit their outlets to compare prices.

2. Check the papers, especially the Sunday edition. Competition among vendors is most apparent among the pages, flyers and inserts of the Sunday newspaper. Take note of the latest sales and the week's specials. Don't forget to check the personal ads for trade-ins and used items.

3. Drive over to garage, yard and estate sales. You never know when a neighbor is ready to part with a perfectly good home appliance, one you actually need, for just a few dollars.

4. Browse the bulletin boards. Many supermarkets, apartment complexes and homeowners associations have community bulletin boards where people can post "need to sell" or "moving sale" announcements. You just might catch a super bargain from a bulletin board advertiser.

5. Go over the flyers and coupon booklets in your mailbox. Mass mailers that target customers who stay at home could be mostly junk mail, but if you're on the lookout for bargain home appliances, you might want to see if mass mailing vendors are offering holiday, clearance, inventory, liquidation, overstock or closeout sale discounts.

6. Go window shopping. Visit the malls, supermarkets, superstores and brand name appliance stores. Don't forget the warehouse stores, liquidation stores and thrift stores. Compare features, prices, discounts and special offers.

7. Surf the Net. The Internet has matured into a safe and reliable shopping venue where well-known vendors run fully functional and interactive online stores. Compare prices, read customer reviews and take advantage of special "hot" online deals. Many appliance vendors provide free or discounted shipping. Don't forget to check out auction sites where you'll find both new and used appliances for unbelievably low starting bids.

Fix A Clogged Drain With Standing Water

Walk down the home aisle of a grocery store, or visit a hardware store, and you'll find plenty of chemical drain cleaners. Although these products can be effective, they also contain dangerous chemicals---just check out the numerous warnings listed on the containers---that can harm your family, wear down pipes, and contaminate groundwater, possibly affecting the pH levels of local lakes, rivers and water supplies. You can fix a clogged drain, even one with standing water, using common household substances and a plunger.

Instructions

1. Before attempting to unclog the drain, use a bucket or cup to remove as much of the standing water as possible.

2. Remove any items you may find in and around the clogged drain. These can include pieces of soap, globs of hair, soap scum, lumps of undissolved hair gel or toothpaste and even small toys.

3. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into the clogged drain. Follow that with 1 cup of vinegar. Baking soda and vinegar dissolve grease and oil. Let the clogged drain sit undisturbed for 15 minutes.

4. Slowly pour a kettle of boiling water into the drain to help loosen the partially dissolved clog. If the pipes are PVC (plastic), use hot water instead. Wait another 10 to 15 minutes.

5. Apply a layer of petroleum jelly around the lip of a plunger. The jelly will help make a seal between the plunger and the surface of the drain. Place the plunger directly over the drain. If you're working on a sink drain, use one hand to cover the overflow before you start plunging.

6. Press the plunger all the way down slowly to create a seal. Then, pull the handle of the plunger up quickly. Continue to press the plunger handle up and down rapidly for a few minutes.

7. Run water into the drain to see if the clog is gone. If the water runs freely, you're done. If the drain is still clogged, or it runs slowly, repeat all the steps.

5 Things To Know Before Buying A House

Understand what comes with the home before you buy.

Buying a house is an exciting but scary step. Home ownership means making an investment in your future, but it also means committing to stay put, at least for a while. Before you make that commitment, you should ensure you are making an informed decision, and not one based on how beautiful the home is or your desire to be on your own.

Your Financial Situation

Just because you qualify for a loan does not necessarily mean you should take a loan. On the other hand, if you don't think you can qualify for a loan, you might be mistaken. When you consider buying a home, sit down with a professional--a loan counselor at your bank or a representative from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development, for instance--and discuss your options. Have tax and income documents ready, as well as a list of your expenses and a copy of your credit report. According to CNN Money, you should try to find a home that is two and a half times your yearly salary. So, if you have a yearly salary of $40,000, you should not choose a house that costs more than $120,000. However, if you have large loan payments or other expenses, you may not want to, or be qualified to, go that high. Ask the professional to help you get a good picture of your earnings, expenses and how they would change if you bought a home.

Home's History

A beautiful home on several acres of green yard might look appealing, but that pretty picture could be hiding problems that will cost you thousands of dollars and hours of lost sleep in the long run. According to the American Association of Realtors, you should find out as much as you can about the home before you buy. Even issues that have been repaired can give you insight into what problems you might be facing a few years down the road. Get a home inspection and carefully go over the results with your inspector. If anything in the home makes you suspicious, don't hesitate to order another inspection from a different company.

Neighborhood

A wonderful home isn't much good if it is in a terrible neighborhood, so find out as much as you can about the neighborhood before you buy. Talk to potential neighbors about any issues the area has been facing, and check to see if there is a neighborhood association or club. Scan newspaper police blotters to see if there is a large amount of crime in the area, and interview principals and teachers at the area schools, if you have children. You might also seek out PTA members or parents of children at those schools to learn more about the climate inside them. The aesthetic appearance of the neighborhood is also important. You probably would not want to move into a home where yours is the only house on the street that is not falling down.

What Comes with the Home

It is customary for home owners to leave some major appliances, like the refrigerator and dishwasher, when they leave the home, but if you see anything else that you like, check if it is for sale. Some sellers won't mind throwing their furniture or decorations in with the home since they are moving anyway. Make sure you and the seller understand exactly what is coming with the home before you sign the contract, and list the items on the contract if it makes you feel more comfortable. Also, confirm the land boundaries and whether outdoor structures, like portable sheds and above-ground pools, will be included before you sign on the dotted line.

"Annoying" Factors

Every home has its annoyances: the third step creaks, or the neighbor's cat likes to lounge on your porch. Even if you are moving to a brand-new home, there are bound to be some annoying factors about your new home and your new location. However, try your hardest before you buy your home to know the difference between small annoying issues and deal breakers. For instance, the American Association of Realtors notes that extra traffic and noise caused by a school might not be something you are willing to deal with. Further, consider how having a difficult-to-remodel home will affect you in five years. Visit the home you are planning to buy as many times as you can; stay overnight if possible. Look for anything that would bother you on a daily basis, and if you find something, look for another home.

Remove Rust From Stainless Steel Appliances

Stainless steel appliances are not impervious to rust.

The chromium content of stainless steel gives it a natural resistance to corrosion, including rust. When non-corrosion resistant material sits on the surface of stainless steel, rust can form on the surface of the metal. Although the rust will not eat through the metal, it does cause stains. These rust stains diminish the look of stainless-steel appliances, sinks and backsplashes. Removing the stains naturally beautifies the surface of your appliances while protecting the environment.

Instructions

1. Examine the surface of the stainless steel appliance to determine the grain direction. The grain is a series of thin lines moving in the same direction.

2. Saturate a scouring pad with white vinegar.

3. Rub the scouring pad across the rust-stained surface of the stainless-steel appliance. Move the scouring pad in a straight line, matching the direction of the grain. Continue scrubbing until the rust stain is no longer visible.

4. Pour water on a rag. Wipe the surface of the stainless steel with the wet rag. Dry the area with a clean rag. Allow the area to dry for 20 minutes.

5. Again scrub the stainless steel if any signs of the rust stain remain on the appliance.

Repair A Dim Oven Display

Dim oven displays prevent you from reading the oven's temperature correctly.

If you have ever looked at your oven display and thought that it appeared dimmer than it used to, you are not imagining things, as this is a very common occurrence. You can correct this by replacing a small part within the display, which has been damaged by the high operating temperatures in the oven. The repair is simple, but you will need to be able to take apart some of your oven, so refer to your oven's information for more details on its particular construction.

Instructions

1. Unplug the oven from its power source and remove the front plate holding the display in place. You will have to use a screwdriver to take out the screws holding this part of the oven frame in place.

2. Take out the display unit from your oven, unscrewing any screws securing it within the oven. You will also have to disconnect the wires running from it.

3. Find the capacitors on the control board of the display, which looks like the circuit board of a computer. The capacitors look like small, cylindrical batteries.

4. Remove the solder holding each of the capacitors in place with a soldering pump and soldering iron.

5. Place the tip of a heated soldering iron against the solder you want to remove until the solder is hot and liquid. Quickly place the pump nozzle against the melted solder and release the handle to suck it up.

List Of Transitional Jobs

Someone in a transitional job may not intend to make a career out of it.

Transitional jobs are positions designed to help unemployed people make the move, or transition, from public assistance to unsubsidized employment. Participants undertake these jobs with the help of government social agencies, which are dedicated to reducing unemployment and dependence on welfare programs. Some states provide related participatory programs, addressing issues of homelessness, substance abuse and teen pregnancy.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Transitional jobs are generally low-skilled positions, because many recipients of these jobs have few marketable skills; for example, they may have poor mental or physical health, low educational attainment, limited work experience or limited English competency. Many transitional jobs are in cleaning and maintenance -- in restaurants, office buildings or other commercial facilities. Cleaning and maintenance transitional jobs can act as valuable stepping stones from unemployment to a permanent position.

Food Services

The food services sector is huge and very complex, so there is always enough activity to accommodate transitional jobs. Such jobs may include positions as chefs, waiters, caterers, dishwashers and food preparers in schools, restaurants, prisons, long-term care homes and other institutions. The food service industry provides opportunities for advancement. A motivated and interested person can begin as a dishwasher and over time, learn enough about food service to become a chef.

Clerical Work

Clerical work is a productive transitional activity for an individual who lacks marketable skills. Learning about how offices work, corporate etiquette and computer skills can provide a formerly unemployed person with valuable additions for a resume. Like the food service industry, the world of clerical work is vast and permeates many different industries. Many viable opportunities in the field exists -- beyond a transitional job -- for someone who acquires the requisite skills.

PC Repair

The repair and maintenance of home computers is a kind of transitional job that participants can use within the context of nine-to-five employment or in a self-employment scenario. Computers are widespread throughout society, and millions of people know use them, but far fewer have any skills in repairing and maintaining them. Mastering these skills can lead not only to escape from the welfare treadmill but to a lucrative career.

Types Of House Wire In Canada

Residential wiring uses various cable sizes.

Residential wiring in Canada is governed by the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC). Wire can be either solid or stranded. Most wire used in houses is solid because it is easier to work with and takes less installation time. The most common type of cable used in houses is called NM D 90. This designation stands for non-metallic dry service cable rated at maximum of 90 degrees Celsius.

Wire Size and Rating

A home's electrical panel must have the correct breaker size for the amperage used.

Wires are commonly labeled according to size and the amperage for which they are rated. The rating is for the maximum value allowed. Some common examples include

#14--rated for 15A--requires a 15A breaker

#12--rated for 20A--requires a 20A breaker

#10--rated for 30A--requires a 30A breaker

#8--rated for 45A--requires a 40A breaker

#6--rated for 65A--requires a 60A breaker

#3--rated for 105A--requires a 100A breaker

Commonly Used Cables

For 70 percent of Canadian house wiring, a 2-conductor #14 cable is used. This application would include electrical plugs, switches and lights. A 3-conductor #14 would be used in three-way switches and split receptacles. A 2-conductor #12 is needed for anything that uses a maximum of 20 amps, such as kitchen receptacle circuits. An electric dryer would require a 3-conductor #10 while an electric range requires a 3-conductor #8. Some Canadian electrical authorities require a minimum wire size of #12 AWG (American wire gauge) and do not allow the use of #14.

Color Coding

Canadian AC wiring is color coded to protect the installer. The protective ground is green or green with a yellow stripe. The neutral is white, hot (active) wires are black and a second active is red. Three phase lines are red, black and blue. Wiring in Canada should always be installed by a licensed electrician and inspected independently to assure CEC compliance.
