Stove Top Burner Problems

Different types of stove tops can have various kinds of problems.

No matter what type of stove you have, there are some problems that can crop up from time to time. They may be easy to fix, or you may need to call a service person. For some of the possible problems, there may be something you can do to lessen the chance of them happening at all.

Types of Stove Tops

Stove tops come in two common types: electric and gas. Electric stoves have burners heated with a coiled heating element called a calrod unit, though some older electric stoves may have a smooth top for easy cleaning. Stoves can be built into the same unit with an oven, a unit called a range. Or they may be built to be installed directly into an opening in the counter top. Both kinds can be fueled by gas or electricity.

Problems With Electric Stoves

Electric stoves won't work if the electricity is interrupted, either by a power outage or a circuit breaker. Electric stove elements can burn out, and each element also has a switch that can break. An electric burner can also be damaged on the surface by a substance being spilled or melted on it.

Problems With Gas Stoves

Anything that keeps the gas from flowing to the burner will cause it not to light, or light poorly. This could be an obstruction in the gas line or in the top of the burner. A problem with the igniter can also cause the burner not to light. If you have a propane stove, you can run out of gas and that can cause the stove not to work.

Troubleshooting Burner Problems

To determine if the problem is with just one burner, try another burner; if another burner lights, the problem is isolated to just one burner. A broken heating unit or switch, or a problem with the gas line or the burner top are examples of problems that can affect one burner. With an electric stove, you can sometimes remove the heating unit and plug it into another burner, as another way to narrow down the problem.

On a gas stove, swap the metal part of the burner top that has the holes in it where the gas comes through (you'll see flames around this part when it's lit). This is a way to see if the holes might be clogged in this part.

Preventing Burner Problems

You can't prevent all problems with appliances, but there are a couple of things that you can do to lessen the chance of some burner problems. Keep your burners clean. Don't leave electric burners on when they are not needed. When cleaning a gas stove top, remove the metal part with the holes around it before you wipe the bottom of the burner surface, to prevent residue from your sponge or from the stove to clog the holes.

What Are The Dangers Of Shutting A Home Down For Cold Winters

Properly close your home to protect it through the winter.

If you leave your home to spend the winter months in a warmer climate, you will need to properly shut down your home for the winter before you leave. You will also need to take the same precautions when you close an vacation home or cabin that is used only during the summer months.

Frozen Pipes

You need to protect your plumbing from freezing during the winter. Pipes can freeze, causing them to leak or burst. Broken pipes can cause great damage to your home. If possible, leave the furnace on a minimum setting of 55 degrees. You can also drain your water tank, shut off the main supply valve, blow the water out of pipes with an air compressor, leave the cabinet doors under the sink open to provide heat and put non-toxic antifreeze in your toilets and sink traps.

Theft

An empty home is a prime target for theft. Give the illusion that activity is going on in the home. Set lights in several rooms to timers, programming them to go on for several hours in the evening. Discontinue all newspaper and mail delivery. Hire someone to shovel the drives and walkways while you are away. An un-shoveled driveway is a major indicator that the home is vacant. You can also secure your home with an alarm system. The alarm system will automatically notify emergency personnel if entry to the home is made.

Vandalism

Vandals may target an home that is left empty for the winter. Notify the local law enforcement agency that you will be shutting down your home for the winter. They will patrol the area and be on the lookout for any suspicious activity. Ask a neighbor or friend to check on the home periodically while you are gone. Be sure to securely store all outside furniture and lawn and garden equipment.

Fire

Fire can quickly destroy an empty home. Unplug all electrical devices and appliances that will not be used. As an extra safety measure, turn the power off at the breaker box to any outlets that are not in use. Make sure the area around the furnace is clear. Do not store papers or chemicals near your furnace or water heater. Installation of security system with a smoke alarm will automatically notify emergency personnel if any smoke is detected in the home.

Care For Le Creuset Cookware

Many Le Creuset items are oven-safe.

Le Creuset, a French company founded in 1925, is renowned for its hand-crafted enameled cast iron cookware, as well as its other product lines which include stoneware and toughened non-stick cookware. Follow the manufacturer's recommended care and use guidelines to guarantee the longevity of your Le Creuset cookware. Before using any cookware for the first time, remove all labels and wash the items thoroughly.

Instructions

Stoneware

1. Use Le Creuset stoneware in an oven no hotter than 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Place the stoneware in a broiler at least 2 ½ inches away from the direct heat source.

3. Allow frozen stoneware to thaw gradually before heating. Do not pre-heat the oven. Place frozen stoneware inside the oven before setting the temperature.

4. Cover the cookware's top with plastic cooking film as necessary when using it in the microwave, but leave the cookware's handles uncovered as they can become excessively hot. The manufacturer recommends only covering the top of the cookware.

5. Clean the stoneware with warm water and detergent. Scouring pads will not harm the surface. The stoneware is also dishwasher-safe. Dry the stoneware after cleaning it.

Enameled Cast Iron

6. Add a few drops of cooking oil to non-stick enameled cast iron pans before using them for the first time and after their initial cleaning. To apply, wipe the oil around the pan with a paper towel. Regular Le Creuset enameled cast iron cookware, which is cast iron cookware that is not non-stick, requires no seasoning or conditioning.

7. Use cast iron cookware in the oven at any temperature if it has stainless steel or cast iron knobs. Cookware with black phenolic handles can only withstand oven temperatures of up to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

8. Heat the cast iron cookware only when it contains food or liquid. Allowing the pan to heat while it is empty can damage its surface.

9. Avoid using metal utensils with this cookware, as they can cause damage to the item's surface. Le Creuset recommends using silicone, plastic or wooden utensils instead.

10. Wait for the pan to cool after use before cleaning. Clean with a non-abrasive sponge and mild detergent. Le Creuset recommends hand-washing these items rather than using the dishwasher. Dry the item immediately after washing it.

Toughened Non-Stick

11. Apply about 1 tbsp. of cooking oil to the non-stick cookware before its first use and after the initial washing. Use a paper towel to rub the oil over the cookware to condition it. Occasionally re-condition the piece in this manner, depending on how often you use the item. For example, if you notice food sticking to the bottom of the pan, re-condition the cookware again.

12. Use low or medium heat settings for this cookware. Avoid heating the item very quickly, as this can damage the cooking surface.

13. Use wooden, plastic or silicone utensils on non-stick cookware as metal utensils can scratch the item's surface.

14. Place your non-stick cookware in an oven no hotter than 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Be aware that the lids are only oven-safe up to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.

15. Wash the non-stick pan by hand, rather than the dishwasher, using a non-abrasive sponge and detergent. Dry the item thoroughly.

Are There Lemon Laws For Washers And Dryers

Refrigerators are covered by many states' lemon laws.

Lemon laws, or consumer protection laws, vary by state. Many of them protect buyers of appliances, just as lemon laws protect people who buy a "lemon" car. Typically, appliances are covered in much the same way; if there are repeated repairs or if the same defect needs repairing multiple times while the warranty is in effect, the manufacturer is obligated to replace the appliance or refund the purchase price.

Lemons

Air conditioners are covered by lemon laws.

What constitutes a "lemon" varies from one state's statutes to the next. Individual state's lemon laws are posted on the Internet and are available through most law offices and city or county courthouses. Typically, an appliance--from a freezer to a toaster oven--that requires repeated repairs, especially for the same defect, are covered. Owners should check the warranty information for the duration of the appliance's guarantee and for the manufacturer's contact information. They should also keep records and receipts from repairs. Contacting the manufacturer's consumer service department with the information is sometimes enough to get the appliance replaced or the money refunded, including the money spent on repairs. Attorneys who specialize in lemon laws can step in if those efforts fail and take the matter to court.

Going to Court

Some states, such as Maine, have arbitration boards which handle lemon law claims. In most states, however, the matter will be referred to a court. Attorneys specialize in lemon law disputes may sue to have the appliance replaced or the purchase price refunded, along with the cost of repairs, court costs and attorney fees. If an appliance is not covered by state lemon laws, redress might be found by pursuing fraud claims.

Paperwork

Keeping track of the paperwork makes it easier to pursue a complaint via a state's lemon laws. Having records of the purchase, the warranty, any service contract and the repairs can help prove the case. Often, repairs or parts are also guaranteed, not just the appliance. Some warranties state that if the appliance is repaired more than a certain number of times within a specified time period it is considered defective and the manufacturer will replace it.

State Laws

Each state has its own statutes regarding "lemons." For example, in California the consumer is first encouraged to seek a solution from the seller or manufacturer. When the manufacturer does not honor the warranty, the California lemon law for appliances, essentially a consumer warranty act, lets the buyer seek compensation through the court. The law forces the manufacturer or seller to either reimburse the buyer for the cost of the appliance and the repairs or to replace the appliance with a similar model.

Remove A Thermostat

Sometimes a thermostat breaks or you are ready to upgrade to a new one with more energy-saving features. Before you can install a new thermostat, you must remove the old one. This job requires only a few minutes (and possibly a screwdriver) to complete.

Instructions

1. Cut the furnace's power source before beginning. Check for a power switch near your furnace or turn off the electrical power supply at the circuit breaker.

2. Turn off the gas supply if you have a gas furnace. Look around the furnace for a black pipe. This pipe is the gas line. Check for a valve located near the pipe. Turn off the gas supply by moving the valve so it's perpendicular to the gas line.

3. Take off the thermostat's old cover by unscrewing the screws that attach the cover to the wall. Some covers don't have screws and simply pull off.

4. Unscrew the mounting plate and notice the wires.

5. Place a small piece of masking tape on each wire. Use a felt-tip marker to mark the masking tape according to the wire's screw terminal location. Usually, the wires are marked with letters.

6. Disconnect the low-voltage wires from the base plate by loosening the screws and then pulling the wires away.

7. Locate the mounting screws for the base plate. Unscrew them and take off the base plate. Guide the base plate over the wires carefully.

Keep Keen Sandals From Stinking

Bacteria and fungus grow in sweaty shoes, producing bad odor over time if the organisms aren't held in check. Keeping your Keen sandals from stinking is not difficult, but if you avoid cleaning sweaty sandals, no matter which brand, the odor will return. Cleaning Keen sandals is exceptionally easy--and it doesn't matter which design of Keen sandal you own. Washing instructions for both the synthetic and leather upper sandals is the same.

Instructions

1. Place the sandals on a flat surface. Sprinkle and cover the insoles with baking soda. Leave it overnight, undisturbed.

2. Shake out the excess baking soda. Place the sandals in your washing machine.

3. Set the machine to a cold water, gentle cycle. Add just a teaspoon of mild laundry detergent and let the sandals go through a wash and rinse cycle.

4. Place the sandals in a well-ventilated area, in front of a fan, to air dry. If any odor remains after washing (it shouldn't), sprinkle baking soda on the insole and leave over night before shaking the sandal to remove excess baking soda.

Prevent Glass Etching In The Dishwasher

Etching can ruin your glassware.

Etching is a permanent film that appears on your glassware after washing it repeatedly in your automatic dishwasher. Etching can appear on any glassware, regardless of the cost. The etching will build up slowly over time and may first appear to be an iridescent color such as blue, brown, pink or purple, according to the University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension website. There are, however, certain things you can do to reduce etching of your glassware in your dishwasher.

Instructions

1. Check to see if your area has hard water. You may need to adjust your dishwasher detergent according to the package directions. It should tell you whether you need to use more or less detergent, depending on the softness of your water.

2. Check the water temperature on your hot water heater. You should always wash dishes in water that is 140 degrees Fahrenheit or below. Using a water temperature that is too hot can cause etching.

3. Use a rinsing additive in your dishwasher receptacle. If you do not have a receptacle to pour a liquid dish-rinsing agent into, then you should purchase one of the small baskets that hold rinsing additives and hang it in the back corner on the lowest rack in your dishwasher. The rinsing agent will help the sheeting action of the water and reduce etching.

4. Switch your dishwasher to the no-heat or Energy Saver cycle. This will cut down on etching and also save you money on your electric bill.

Magic Chef Range Troubleshooting

Magic Chef no longer makes ranges, but many people own these products. If you fall into this category, you may find yourself needing to solve a few problems which arise over time. Try saving yourself the money of a repairman by troubleshooting the issues on your own. If you do need to place a call to a service center, the good news is that Magic Chef range replacement parts are generally readily available for purchase.

Power

If your Magic Chef range will not work, make sure the oven is plugged in properly and that you haven't accidentally blown a fuse or tripped a circuit breaker. If this isn't your problem, make sure you have set the oven controls correctly. Your owner's manual will have instructions on do this. If these steps do not solve your problem and you are sure that you have not lost power to your house, then you will need to contact a repairman.

Surface Elements

Sometimes you may find that the surface elements on your Magic Chef range will not turn on or heat your food correctly. If this occurs, make sure that the unit is plugged in properly and that no fuses or circuit breakers have been blown or tripped. Also, make sure that the cookware you are using is correct. For best results, you should always use cookware with a flat bottom. If you are using a Canadian model, during a self-clean cycle the surface elements will not turn on.

Display and Control Panels

If you see that there is a number in the display panel with a continuous beeping noise, this is a fault code. You will need to press the Stop/Clear pad. This should solve the problem. It it does not, and the code appears again, you should disconnect the unit from its power source and call a repairman. If your control panel will not allow you to punch in an entry, the pad may be "stuck." You should press each of the seven pads to disengage the stuck pad. Once you do this, press the Stop/Clear pad and reprogram what you want the range to do. If this does not solve your problem, call a repairman.

Homemade Power Washer Detergent

A power washer can quickly clean nearly any outdoor surface, and by adding the proper cleaning solution you get a boost in cleaning power. Commercial detergents for these units can be expensive, so making your own solution saves money while cleaning effectively. When making your own homemade power washer detergent, you want to use something that safely cleans your outdoor surface and causes no harm to your surrounding landscape as some chemical ingredients will do.

Instructions

1. Fill the fluid canister of the power washer with cleaning solution until you reach the fill line. Pour 1 cup oxygen bleach and 1/4 cup dishwasher detergent into the canister, followed by a 1-gallon jug of water. Keep in mind that measurements do not need to be exact; come as close as you can to the basic measurements.

The oxygen bleach cleans just as well as chemically based bleach products, but contains none of the harmful chemicals that contaminate soil and kill plants and shrubs. The dishwasher detergent is mild, cleans effectively and does not create the powerful soapsuds that multiply quickly when you use basic dish soap. Both liquid and powder detergents work equally well.

2. Plug in and turn on the unit.

3. Turn on the power washer and clean your surface.

Recipe For Liquid Dishwasher Soap

Take a green approach to cleaning, and make your own products. Create homemade dishwasher soap using a few household items. Making dishwasher soap at home will save money and contribute toward saving the planet. Green living reduces the number of plastic bottles.

Lemon Dishwasher Soap

Whip up a batch of lemon dishwasher soap if you don't have time to run to the grocery store. Combine 1 cup baking soda with 1 cup borax, 1 cup of water and 2 to 3 drops of lemon essential oils. Borax and baking soda are natural scrubbing agents that are ideal for extra heavy dish loads. They also help remove stubborn, caked-on food. The lemon oil is optional for this recipe but adds that fresh lemony scent to the dishes. Purchase lemon essential oil at a local health food store. Keep the solution in a plastic jug with the other cleaning supplies. Use two to three tablespoons per

load.

Natural Dishwasher Soap

Use natural, organic products to design your homemade dishwasher soap. Combine ½ cup of liquid Castile soap with ½ cup water. Castile soap is developed from vegetable oil and is used in a variety of natural homemade cleaning products.

Purchase liquid castile soap from health and beauty stores or at local health food stores. Add 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice, 3 drops of tea tree extract and ½ cup white vinegar. Lemon juice and tea tree oils are natural grease cutters. Purchase tea tree extract at most health food stores. Blend well and store in a large plastic container. Use 2 tbsps. per load.

Powder Dishwashing Soap

If you prefer to use a powder in your dishwasher, try this recipe. Combine equal parts of borax and washing soda. Place 1 teaspoon in your dishwasher dispenser with the powder, and add white vinegar to the rinse dispenser. White vinegar is a natural grease cutter and gets dishes squeaky clean. This recipe can be morphed into liquid dishwasher soap if you drizzle water and white vinegar into your borax and washing soda mixture. Pour the liquid until it becomes smooth and pours easily.

Soap Residue

Homemade dishwasher detergents clean and scrub dishes as well as most commercial products; however homemade recipes have some drawbacks. If you find soapy residue on silverware or plastic containers, use white vinegar in the rinse cycle to remove the film. Use homemade dishwasher recipes sparingly instead of every time you run the dishwasher.

Drain My Kenmore Dishwasher'S Drip Pan

Most dishwashers, including Kenmore dishwashers, do not come equipped with a drip pan. If your Kenmore dishwasher has a drip pan installed underneath of it, it most likely is attached to the floor and not to your dishwasher. In most cases, there is not enough water on the drip pan to build up before it will evaporate. However, if you notice water on the floor in front of your dishwasher, you will need to drain the drip pan. Once you have drained the drip pan, you may need to investigate the reason for the overflow of water.

Instructions

1. Turn off the power to your Kenmore dishwasher at your electrical breaker box.

2. Remove the kick plate from the bottom front of your Kenmore dishwasher. You will need a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the screws along the edges of the kick plate.

3. Wipe underneath the dishwasher, along the drip pan, with a towel.

4. Ring out the towel, and continue to wipe underneath the dishwasher until the towel has absorbed all of the water from the drip pan.

5. Replace the kick plate and screw it back into place.

6. Turn the power back on to your Kenmore dishwasher.

Troubleshooting Kenmore Washer Overflows

Water Inlet Valve

The water inlet valve connects the hot and cold water lines before entering into the washer, combining the two by means of solenoids in the appropriate proportions. The valve can become worn over time to the degree that it cannot close itself entirely, meaning water will continue to flow through it until the solenoids engage and shut off the flow. This can easily result in an overflow. To test the water inlet valve, first unplug the washing machine and disconnect the valve from the machine's back. Have a bucket handy because, if the valve is faulty, a good amount of water will drain from the valve when you disconnect it. A replacement water inlet valve is inexpensive and easily swapped out for the old one, provided you remember to turn off the water pressure leading to the hoses.

Water Level Switch

The water level switch is also known as the pressure switch. There should be a clear plastic tub running down from the control console to end near the bottom of the washer's drum. As water fills the drum, it rises within the tube as well, compressing the air already in the tube against the pressure switch. If the tube has become brittle and cracked, it will allow air to escape, preventing pressure from building inside and throwing the switch. Test it by blowing into the end. You should hear a click from the control console. If you do not hear anything, then either the pressure switch is broken or the tube is cracked. Remove the tube and the switch, which should be connected to the control console. The console can be accessed in various methods, depending on the exact model of Kenmore washer you own. You should be able to remove the console by following instructions in the appliance's ownership manual. Blow directly against the pressure switch once you gain access. If it clicks, then the tube needs to be replaced; if it does not, then the pressure switch itself needs to be replaced.

Drainage Problems

The water outlet pipe near the base of the washer can become clogged with debris over time. Since Kenmore washers continuously drain out dirty water and replace it with clean water as they wash clothes, it's possible that if the outlet valve or pipe is obstructed, the washer will overflow. Turn off the water and electricity leading to the washer and detach the outlet pipe, both at the machine and the wall. Run water through the pipe until the flow coming out is strong and clear and contains no sediment. If the pipe was clean to begin with, then the pipe running through the back of the wall to the drain may be the culprit. The pipe fitting should be female ended, identical to that of a garden hose. Attach a garden hose and slowly turn the water on until it's running at full force. The line should be cleared by the water pressure after 10 minutes of this. Attach the drain hose and turn the water and electricity back on.

Pattern Ideas For Making Chef Coats

A Chef's coat is an important part of a cook's uniform in the professional kitchen setting. Traditionally white with long sleeves and double-breasted, there are numeral options in design one to make. The benefit of making a chef's coat is that the materials used are exactly what is wanted and can be catered to the individual cook's need (breathable, lightweight or heavyweight, patterns, etc.) Another benefit is that it is tailored to fit the individual instead of trying to find a coat and altering it to fit the individual. Here are some general pattern ideas for making a chef coat custom to the wearer.

A Chef's coat is an important piece of a culinary uniform.

Coat Closures

A wide range of closures can be found.

Coat closures include buttons, snaps or fabric knots. Fabric knots are the traditional choice for chef's coats and can be made from flat or thin ropes, thick ribbon or strips of non-fraying fabrics. Buttons are also a great, simple choice and can be monochromatic to match the uniform (either all white, all clear or all black) or can be contrasting revealing a favorite color or a color of the restaurant. Snaps are another great choice for a custom closure and they can be found in different shapes, sizes and materials, such as plastic or stainless steel.

Pocket Placement

Pockets are useful for holding a variety of things.

This is a big issue for many chef's as a particular placement of a pocket can mean quick access to a much used tool, such as a cooking thermometer. Pocket placement is important in a custom chef's jacket as it can placed either left or right side, depending on if the cook is left or right handed. Also, it can also be placed on either arm to hold pens, pencils or other small kitchen implement.

Colors & Patterns

Colors are great to use in a custom chef's coat pattern.

The color of the chef coats available now in catalogs and in stores range from white to rainbow colors. But patterns are also great in casual environments. If the restaurant is located on the beach, a fun and easy to wash print of the ocean or seashells may be appropriate, as is a chili pepper pattern for a Southwestern themed restaurant.

Custom Silhouettes

Custom silhouettes can be made from a custom pattern.

Some women have a tough time finding a jacket to fit them properly. Either a jacket is too large, too bulky at the shoulders or is too loose around the waist. By altering the pattern to include particular shapes can mean a more fitted and easier wearing middle and a tapered shoulder.

Types of Fabric

Different types of fabrics are available.

There are many different kinds of fabric available and fabric blends. In certain climates a breathable 100 percent cotton fabric may be better and in some areas an easy to care for polyester blend may be more appropriate. Not only does breathability play an important part of fabric types, but the weight of the fabric itself. When the patterns, details and embellishments have been decided upon, feel every fabric yourself before making a purchase to see if that is a good choice for wearability for the chef's coat.

Compare Frigidaire & Whirlpool Dehumidifiers

A dehumidifier helps the air in your home stay comfortable.

A dehumidifier can be a very important and essential household appliance. Its basic function is to remove moisture and humidity from the air. In certain climates, as well as areas of your home that contain a lot of moisture, having a dehumidifier is necessary to maintain your indoor atmosphere. For example, a basement with too much moisture in the air can have a mold problem, since mold thrives in moist, humid places. Frigidaire and Whirlpool are two dehumidifier brands you can compare.

Instructions

1. Calculate the square footage of the space where you plan to use the dehumidifier by multiplying the length of the space times the width. Check to see if the Whirlpool and Frigidaire dehumidifiers you're comparing can accommodate that space. All dehumidifiers will contain a sizing chart that you can follow.

2. Pay attention to the bucket size of the dehumidifiers you're comparing. The bucket is what holds the water that is removed from the air. The smaller the bucket, the more often you'll have to empty it.

3. Check out the controls on the Frigidaire and Whirlpool dehumidifiers you're comparing. Digital screens are available. You should make sure they're user-friendly and easy to understand.

4. Keep price in mind as you shop for a dehumidifier. Most Whirlpool and Frigidaire dehumidifiers cost between $200 and $400 as of November 2010, but you can find models that are as inexpensive as $150, although they'll likely be smaller models.

5. Look for the extra features offered by the Frigidaire and Whirlpool dehumidifiers. Some common dehumidifier features include automatic defrost, automatic shutoff, washable filters and quieter operation. Models with two-speed fans can usually operate much more quietly.

Build A Raised Countertop

Raising the Bar

Raised countertops not only create usable space in a kitchen, but they also add a new dimension to it. The raised countertop in this example is 18-by-40 inches with a pony wall (short wall) under it that is 12-inches tall and 36-inches long. The 18-by-40-inch top can be used as a deck to cover with laminate or tile, or it can be made using oak or ash plywood and stained or varnished.

Instructions

Pony Wall and Deck

1. Place the two 36-inch 2-by-4s on a worktable. Measure from one end and make a mark at 11 1/4 and 12 3/4 inches. Repeat this from the other end of the 36-inch lumber. Next, measure from one end of one of the 2-by-4s and make marks at 6, 18 and 30 inches and center them on the 3 ½-inch width of the 2-by-4. Drill holes on these marks with the 5/16-inch drill bit for the toggle bolts. Do this to only one of the 2-by-4s.

2. Secure the four 9-inch 2-by-4s to the 36-inch 2-by-4 without the holes drilled in it with the 2½-inch deck screws. Place 2 on the ends and 1 on the lines (11 1/4 and 12 3/4-inch) drawn in Step 1.

3. Place the 18-by-40-by-¾ inch plywood on the table. Draw a line parallel to the 40-inch edge, exactly 4 inches from the edge. Next, draw another line 7 1/2-inches from the same edge. Apply glue inside the lines and place the 2-by-4 assembly from the previous steps on this line and 2 inches from either end. Secure it to the plywood with the 2-inch deck screws. Next, place the remaining 36-inch 2-by-4 on the ends of the 9-inch pieces and secure it with the 2½-inch deck screws.

4. Next, apply glue to the ends of the 9-inch 2-by-4s. Place the remaining 36-inch 2-by-4 on the ends of the 9-inch pieces and secure it with the 2½-inch deck screws.

Installing the Raised Countertop

5. Locate the area where the desired raised counter top is to be installed. Draw a line parallel to the edge of the counter top exactly 4 inches from the edge of the counter top. Draw another parallel line 7 1/2 inches from the edge.

6. Locate the point on the countertop where the pony wall will begin. Measure from that point and make marks at 6, 18 and 30 inches. Center them between the 3½-inch width of the pony wall.

7. Drill holes on each of these marks with the 5/8-inch drill bit to accommodate the toggle bolts. Remove the winged nut from the bolts, slip them through the holes in the 2-by-4 of the pony wall and then replace the winged nuts. These holes match the ones drilled in Step 1 of the first section, "Pony Wall and Deck."

8. Insert the toggle bolts into the holes on the counter top and place the pony wall on the lines drawn in Step 1 of this section. Tighten the toggle bolts until the pony wall is secured to the counter top.

9. Secure the ¼-inch panels to the pony wall, starting with the 36-inch pieces and then the 4 inch. Use the brads or paneling nails.

Trimming

10. Measure and cut 4 pieces of outside corner mold 12 inches in length with the electric miter saw. Secure them to the 4 outside corners of the pony wall with the finish nails. Next, measure the distance between the outside corner mold and cut a piece of flat mold to fit. Secure them with the finish nails.

11. Measure and cut the 2 long pieces of decorative mold to fit the length of the new countertop. Then cut 2 pieces to fit between them on the ends of the raised countertop.

12. Set all the finish nails with the nail set. Fill the holes with wood putty and then sand the entire raised counter top in preparation of a finish.

Troubleshoot An Electrolux Dryer

Having a washer and dryer at home can be a real convenience, but when those vital appliances stop working it is anything but convenient. Having some basic troubleshooting skills under your belt is the best way to keep your dryer running smoothly and get it back in service quickly when something goes wrong.

Instructions

Troubleshooting Your Dryer

1. Check the area around the exhaust vent of your dryer. One of the most common causes of dryer problems, including overheating, failing to dry clothes properly and not heating up properly, is that the exhaust has been blocked by dirt, lint, and other debris. In addition, the cheap vent hoses that come with many Electrolux dryers are not adequate for the job, and it is a good idea to replace those vent hoses with higher quality stainless steel replacement hoses. In the meantime, be sure to check the entire length of the vent hose for blockage, removing any kinks as you go.

2. Check the thermal fuse. Many models of Electrolux dryers are equipped with a thermal fuse, and if this thermal fuse is faulty, the dryer may not run at all, or it may run but not generate any heat. Consult your owner's manual for the location of the thermal fuse on your dryer model. On many models, the thermal fuse is located inside the back cover panel; you may need a screwdriver to access this panel. Be sure to unplug the dryer before you get started. If the thermal fuse is blown, be sure to replace it and try to run the dryer again.

3. Check the power cord running to the dryer. If the cord is frayed or damaged it could cause the unit to short out and not run properly. If the cord is damaged, the dryer may run sometimes, but refuse to start at other times. Be sure to check the entire length of the cord, from the point where it attaches to the dryer itself to the point where it plugs into the wall. If the cord is frayed, cut, or damaged it will need to be replaced before you attempt to use the dryer again.

My Ge Profile Dishwasher Will Not Turn Off

The GE Visibility dishwasher is a occupation of high-octane GE dishwashers that includes the SmartDispense engineering to insure balanced detersive dispensing for apiece cargo, based on the freight's angle. The dishwasher features a six-level washables scheme and automatonlike temperature command and detection to discover when a loading is set to go to the succeeding tone of the cleanup hertz. A operation trouble that prevents the dishwasher from complementary is much because of a loading asymmetry. The air gap typically is located next to your sink's faucet fixture and requires cleaning to eliminate clogs. A sharp tool is suggested to clean the air gap, which should never be subjected to drain cleaners because of the risk of chemicals draining into the dishwasher.

Heating Element Work In A Dryer

Overview

Dryer Basics

A dryer removes the moisture from clothes by mixing the fabrics with hot air. The air enters and exits the dryer from an opening in the front of the dryer through which air in the house is drawn inside. This air passes by the heating element, which adds heat to the air before it enters the dryer's tumbler, where the clothes are cycled. Air is also being constantly drawn out of the tumbler, sucked through a filter that catches the lint and then sent to another fan, that blows the air through a vent outside of the house.

Heating Elements

The heating element section contains both the element itself and several thermostats. The heating element is usually located in the back of the dryer, behind the back panel. The coil-shaped element greatly resembles the heating elements used in both ovens and hot water heaters. Typically, dryer heating elements are powered in two different ways: gas and electric (with electric being the most common).

Gas-powered elements depend on the pilot light, which ignites the gas, creating a large amount of heat. This heat is very carefully contained and channeled by metal plates designed to transfer the heat into the air. Heat also moves from warmer areas to colder areas, trying to reach an equilibrium with its surroundings, and it moves very easily through many metals. Once the metal is heated, the cool air is passed over the plates; some of the heat moves into the air, heating it for exposure to the clothes.

The electric heating element works the same way, but instead of igniting gas, the dryer sends an electrical current through the heating coil. The coil has a certain resistance to the current, which means that it fights against the progression of the current, waylaying the electrons on their journey. This buildup of electrons means a build-up of energy (heat). The metal soon becomes red-hot with heat from this current resistance; that heat is passed on into the air and through the dryer. Like other heating elements, the dryer's heating coil is made out of a very durable metal alloy with a coating made of a heat-resistant ceramic to protect it.

Thermostats

The thermostats (there are usually two or three of them) carefully monitor this process. They are equipped with small electrode sensors that allow to detect the temperature of the air and the element. Data is fed to these thermostats based on the dryer setting. Their job is twofold: first they make sure the air does not become too hot and burn clothes or too cold and fail to do its job. Second, they turn the heating element on and off again to make sure that the air reaches an even more specific temperature for the setting the dryer is on--a lower temperature for just a wrinkle-smoothing setting, for instance, but a high temperature for a full load of wet clothes.
