Construct A Garment Rack

Garment racks are great for hanging clothes right out of the dryer, organizing rooms with very little closet space or just for providing portability of clothes. You can construct a sturdy garment rack from PVC pipe in just moments, or follow the same basic principles using thick wooden dowels or metal pipes, if desired. Since this project also allows you to choose a fixed base or wheels, you can customize it to fit your needs.

Instructions

1. Connect two of the 48-inch pipes with an elbow connector.

2. Use the other elbow connector to attach a third 48-inch pipe to form a square C shape.

3. Attach the top middle part of the four-way connectors to the open ends of the square C shape. Then connect the fourth 48-inch pipe to the bottom middle connector hole to create a 48-inch square.

4. On either side of the 48-inch square, insert the 12-inch pipes into the remaining holes of the four-way connectors. Your garment rack should stand now, although it will be wobbly.

5. If using PVC elbows, connect these to the ends of the 12-inch pipes, with the other connector hole resting on the floor. If using furniture wheels, drill a small hole in the underside of the ends of the 12-inch pipes and insert the wheels into these holes.

Self Clean An Amana Gas Oven

Gas ovens needs to be cleaned periodically.

Amana is a company that sells household appliances: refrigerators, dishwashers, clothes dryers, washing machines and ovens. If you're in the market for a new oven, you can purchase both electric and gas ovens through Amana. Before you decide to purchase a gas oven, or if you have recently purchased one, it is important to understand properly clean and maintain it. This ensures that your Amana gas oven can last for years to come.

Instructions

1. Spray glass cleaner onto the inside and outside surface of the glass door and the outside of the oven door. Use a nonabrasive scrubbing pad to scrub away any baked-on residue on the glass door.

2. Prepare a cleaning solution in a small bucket. Fill the bucket with warm water and add a few drops of mild liquid soap.

3. Dip a soft cloth in the soap solution and wring it out. Pull off the knobs by pulling them straight up and use the cloth to clean that area of the gas oven, as well as the knobs, before replacing them.

4. Clean the broiler pan and grid (if your Amana oven has them) by spraying on a mildly abrasive cleanser or by using your soapy cleaning solution, depending on how much residue there is to clean. Scrub with a nonabrasive scrubber.

5. Apply glass cleaner to the control panel of the oven and use a soft cloth to gently clean the area.

6. Clean the cooktop of the gas oven, the grates and the caps by spraying on an abrasive cleanser. Use a nonabrasive scrubbing pad to remove any residue. You can also clean the grates on a "pot-scrubber" dishwasher cycle.

7. Coat the inside surface of your oven with oven cleaner and use a steel wool pad to scrub away food particles and other debris. The oven racks and roasting racks can also be cleaned using this method. Be sure to read the instructions on the oven cleaner can carefully before using it.

The Best 30 Inch Electric Range

Electric ranges provide precise heat for professional cooking.

Electrical ranges heat up food with a more refined precision than traditional gas ranges, using infrared elements to heat the cookware quickly. Some ranges even use induction, a new technology that allows cooking to occur much faster than it ever did before. To get the best buy from an electric range, look for the features that best apply to what you want out of the range.

Safety Lockout

If you have any small children in your home, or plan to receive guests with small children, get a range with a control lockout. This feature locks out all range controls so nothing happens while you aren't present. Features like these prevent small children from getting burned while unattended.

Convenience

If you have ever cooked with a range that has knobs sticking out of it, you probably know how annoying it is to have to take care not to accidentally lean on a knob, which could turn it on without you even realizing. Get a range with a touch control panel if you don't want to end up making mistakes while cooking. Smooth-top ranges give you another advantage in that you can clean them easily.

Go for Induction

If you want the best heating for your purchase, get an oven that inducts heat into an element instead of radiating it. Induction creates a strong magnetic field that produces "friction" on magnetic surfaces, which resist the field. This resistance makes the surface glow a bright red color, emitting superior amounts of heat.

More Efficient Heating

Sometimes, you might want to heat something smaller than usual on your range, which would require a smaller heating element than what your range provides. If you would like to heat, for example, a small coffeepot, you probably don't need all the width of even the smallest range element to do this. To heat smaller things, consider a range with adjustable elements that allow you to change the surface they cover. This also helps you save money you would otherwise have spent on electricity used to heat the air around a pot instead of the pot itself.

Make Solar Energy Panels With Used Glass Bottles

A solar panel may appear to be too complicated to build for a garage or kitchen, but a crude solar panel can be made from a handful of ordinary tools, scrap parts, some copper sheeting, a leftover case of clear glass bottles and a kitchen burner or hot plate. This easy-to-build project makes a good science project for kids, under parental supervision.

Instructions

1. Get an old crate or a case of clear glass bottles with wide mouths. Snapple bottles, or something similar, are ideal. A bottle neck or opening that is too narrow will make the copper strip to be cut later too small to be of any use.

2. Put the bottles in a dishwasher and run them through a wash-and-rinse cycle to soak them. Do not use the dry cycle. Use the plastic scouring pad to remove the soaked labels from the bottles. A sink of warm water also will work, but will require more elbow grease.

3. Cut most of the cardboard case away, so that only the bottom and the frame remain. Leave just enough cardboard around the edges of the bottom to give the 24 bottles a little stability. The end result should leave plenty of exposed surface area for soaking up sunlight.

4. Measure the height of one bottle and the width of its mouth.

5. Cut 48 strips from the copper sheeting, using the sheet metal sheers. The strips should be cut using the measurements you took in Step 4, with two adjustments: Subtract 1/4 inch from the bottle's height and subract 1/3 or 1/4 inch from the bottle's width. This will ensure a good fit and that the copper strips won't come into contact inside the bottle.

6. Take 24 strips and heat them to red-hot over a gas burner or with an electric hotplate or a blow torch. You can use thongs to hold the strips, but make sure the thongs are insulated. A layer of black oxide will form on one side of the strips.

7. Scrub off the black oxide by gently using the plastic scouring pad. There will be a layer of pinkish-red oxide underneath. That is the oxide you want to keep. To repeat: Scrub off the black; keep the red.

8. Insert a red oxide strip and a clean strip into each bottle. Clip them to the sides of the bottles using the alligator clips. Make sure the two strips do not touch. If they do, the result will be a short circuit.

9. Now strip off the insulation from the ends of the wires extending from your alligator clips. All 24 wires will need to be spliced together, so that all the current will flow down one wire. How this is done will depend heavily on the size of your bottles. An example would be to take all the positive leads from a row of four bottles, splice the four leads to a new piece of positive wiring and cap them all with a wire nut. In a case of 24 bottles, this would result in six positive joint leads, which can be spliced together to a third wire in the same manner. Repeating the process with the negative leads will ultimately join all the cells to one wire. Whatever arrangement is used for splicing the leads together and into one wire, remember to keep the negative and positive leads separate.

10. Mix up enough saltwater to fill all the bottles between a half and two-thirds full. Use warm water, and keep adding salt until it stops dissolving while being stirred. This will ensure a super-saturated solution.

11. Connect the panel's wire to an ammeter, a device that measures current. Measure the output before deciding what kind of lightbulb (or other appliance) to attach to your panel. While the difference in electrical output between a 16 oz.- and a 32-oz. bottle may be small, multiplied by 24 it will add up. The difference between a panel using small bottles and one using large bottles could be substantial. It needs to be measured.

12. Place your unit in full sun at midday and measure its electrical output. It will take only a few seconds for the copper sheets and salt water to start reacting. Use this to choose an appropriate appliance to connect to it.

Find Jobs For People With Arrest Records

Job seekers with a criminal background may find employment difficult to find.

Finding employment when you have a criminal record can prove very challenging. Even in the best of economic times, employers are reluctant to put themselves at risk by employing felons or those with extensive criminal backgrounds. The opportunities for offenders are not necessarily high-paying or enjoyable, but jobs are occasionally available.

Instructions

1. Be humble. If your criminal background is extensive, you are not likely to find a job where you are paid well or are able to make your own decisions while at work. Social services agencies often run welfare-to-work programs or vocational rehabilitation programs for those who need assistance entering the workforce. In some cases, agencies specialize in hiring felons, while other agencies specialize in hiring mentally, physically, and emotionally challenged employees as well as those with criminal backgrounds.

2. Consider the Army. If you have stayed away from a life of crime for a while and can point to signs that you have rehabilitated yourself, you might qualify to join the Army. Talk to an Army recruiter to learn about waivers the Army can grant when potential recruits have a criminal history.

3. Apply for jobs in restaurants and the service industry. Many employers are not concerned with their kitchen employees' criminal background. Jobs as line cooks, dishwashers, fast food team members and other low-skill positions are sometimes available to felons and ex-offenders. In other cases, offenders can get employment as janitors, housekeepers and in other positions that require labor-intensive cleaning. You may also want to inquire as to whether local day labor placement agencies will give offenders work.

4. Join community groups or support groups. Substance recovery groups and other 12-steps groups can be great places to network and find about job opportunities. Some community group are organized specifically to help those released from prison to re-enter the community. If convict-"friendly" employees can be found in your area, chances are someone in one of these groups knows about it. If you attend church or are otherwise actively religious, the clergy may be willing to assist you.

5. Familiarize yourself with the law. In most fields, employers do not have to bar felons from employment. Moreover, depending on the nature of your crime and the state your live in, you may be able to get your record cleared of certain offenses. If your job requires an extensive background check, this prior offense may show up, but not every job requires such a background check.

Recipe For Garden Deer Repellent

Deer can be beautiful creatures, but can cause severe damage to our gardens. They feed on plant leaves and vegetables, and it does not take long for a single deer to destroy an entire garden. You can easily create your own deer repellent right at home which will keep deer out of your garden, and prevent you from having to take further measures to get rid of them.

Eggs

Eggs work as a natural repellent when sprayed on plant leaves. Deer do not like the taste or smell of eggs, so they will avoid your garden altogether. In a spray bottle, mix 2 cups of water with 2 whisked eggs. Spray this solution directly onto plant leaves, and the eggs will work to stick to leaves, helping the solution to withstand rain and other weather conditions for an extended period of time. Spraying this solution on plant leaves twice per month should keep the deer out of your garden.

Dish Soap

Dish soap also repels deer. In a spray bottle, mix 2 cups of water with 15 drops of your normal liquid dish detergent. Spray directly onto plant leaves, and the detergent will work as an adhesive, sticking to plant leaves. The scent and flavor of the solution will keep deer at bay, and cause them to search for food in another location. Spray this solution onto plant leaves once per week.

Hot Sauce

The strong smell of hot sauce will easily work to repel deer. In a spray bottle, mix a solution of 2 cups water, 1/2 cup hot sauce, and 5 drops liquid dish detergent (which will work as an adhesive). Spray this solution onto plant leaves, and repeat every week until deer no longer come to your garden as a feeding area.

Troubleshoot Ge Washers

General Electric, or GE, is a popular manufacturer of home appliances, including washers. Some examples of washing machines produced by GE are Profile Harmony, Profile Energy Star and Space Saving. If your washer starts to malfunction, GE recommends that you do some basic troubleshooting before you call for service. For specific troubleshooting help, refer to your owner's manual.

Instructions

1. Replace any blown fuses if your GE washer does not turn on. Remove the access panel of the GE washer with a screwdriver. Locate the blown fuse and pull it out by hand before pushing in a replacement fuse. GE recommends using a time-delay fuse in their washers. Replace the access panel with the screwdriver. You may need to reset your home circuit breaker as well to resolve any power issues. Check that the unit is plugged in and the lid is closed as well if the washer fails to operate.

2. Review any status indicators that appear on the display of your GE washer. If you have a display panel, error codes may show up when you are experiencing an issue with the washer. For example, "UB" means you have an unbalanced load and "LO" means the washer's lid is not closed.

3. Check the drain hose for your GE washer. If it has a kink in it, it could be preventing the water from draining out properly. Make sure all hoses are secured and free of holes.

4. Examine the faucets and fill hoses if water is not filling the washer. The incoming faucets need to be turned to the on position and the fill hoses must be free of clogs or kinks. Fill hoses wear easily and typically require replacement after five years of use.

5. View the temperature of your household water heater. If the water being used in the washer is not being warmed up properly, it could indicate an issue with your water heater.

Dishwasher Gel Packs Are Stuck In The Door

Dishwasher gel packs are equipped for use within normal dishwasher cycles, produced having a permeable packaging made to dissolve in heated water. Upon release, the gel detergent propagates through the dishwater. Should you uncover that the gel packs are becoming stuck within the time-release detergent compartment, you will find several probable causes.

Latch Problems

A typical problem with gel packs may be the latch. Sometimes latches can stick, jamming the gel pack within the compartment and never delivering it whatsoever. This is among the simplest problems to check since most latches possess a manual release. Make use of this manual release to shut after which open the detergent compartment yourself. When the latch seems to stay and also the compartment stays attached or only partly open, you might have a rusty latch that requires cleaning.

Timing Problems

In some cases, there might be a problem using the timing mechanism that controls once the dishwasher opens the detergent compartment. In case your dishwasher has this type of cycle, it might become stuck in a certain stage or even the signals to spread out the compartment might not be dealing with. This might be occurring when the latch works however the compartment remains fully closed. Within this situation, you may want to begin to use gel packs that you could increase the dishwasher immediately with no time release.

Dish Problems

Sometimes detergent compartments are situated in spots around the dishwasher door that can't open fully when large plates are obstructing. For grain liquids, it isn't really an problem for gel packets, the doorway may have the ability to open a portion, insufficient to permit the packet to dissolve. Only fall into line more compact dishes round the compartment to ascertain if this solves the issue.

Gel Problems

In other cases, the gel itself might be the problem. The gel might be melting out early and jamming the compartment or can become glued to within the compartment. You might want to try different gel packets or any other detergent pellets to ascertain if every other option works more effectively.

Troubleshoot A Bosch She43m Dishwasher

The Bosch SHE43M dishwasher has a built-in filter for increased cleaning power.

The Bosch Co. makes many different home appliances, including coffee machines, refrigerators, ranges, washers and dryers, but they may be best known for their dishwashers. Bosch dishwashers are available online and in select retailers and come in a variety of styles, including concealed controls, visible controls or a custom panel designed to match the other cabinets in the home. The SHE43M dishwasher offers a stainless steel tub with four wash cycles and an Energy Star rating. If problems occur with the dishwasher, performing troubleshooting efforts may help identify the issue and offer a solution.

Instructions

1. Look to see if the Bosch dishwasher is properly connected to a working power supply if the dishwasher does not turn on or function. Reset the local fuse or circuit breaker if necessary.

2. Check the rinse agent dispenser if the dishes are not drying completely. Refill the dispenser with rinse aid, which can be purchased at most hardware and grocery stores. Do not select an "air dry" cycle as this cycle does not use heat and dishes may remain damp.

3. Run the hot water at the nearest sink prior to starting the dishwasher if the cycle seems to take a very long time. This will heat the water that enters the dishwasher, shortening the running time.

4. Check the drain hose and remove any clogs or kinks if the water is not draining from the dishwasher. At least one section of the drain hose needs to be 20 inches above the dishwasher floor for proper drainage.

5. Wipe the spray arms with a clean, damp cloth if suds remain in the dishwasher after the cycle has completed. Reduce the amount of detergent used and ensure the detergent is designed for automatic dishwashers. Remove the bottom rack and turn the filter assembly counterclockwise ¼ turn to lift out and clean the filter. Rinse the filter and set back into the dishwasher. Turn ¼ turn clockwise and return the bottom rack.

Position the oven racks correctly to ensure good air circulation.

If you open the oven door while cooking, remember to cook longer to compensate for the heat loss.

If baked items are too brown on the bottom, move the oven rack to a higher position.

If the tops of baked goods brown too early, cover with aluminum foil until goods are fully baked.

Drain A Dishwasher

Faults with the kitchen dishwasher are hard to diagnose -- there isn't much to see when you open its front. The machine's filters and waste pipe may be blocked with residue, and the dishes will still be dirty, if the dishwasher is not draining properly after the wash cycle is completed. Check the water drainage pipe at the back of the dishwasher to make sure it isn't kinked or bent. Remove the dishes and the dishwasher's sliding racks before you start draining.

Instructions

1. Unplug the dishwasher. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and wear old clothes or coveralls. The residue in the dishwasher filters may be greasy.

2. Reach inside the bottom of the dishwasher. Remove the filter guard, a silver grid covering the drainage filter, by lifting it out. If water covers the filter guard, you may have to find it by feel. Scrub the filter guard to remove residue and ensure the drainage holes are clear.

3. Remove the filter. The filter unlocks with a short counterclockwise twist. Clean residue from the filter and rinse it under hot water. The water in the machine may now drain through the waste pipe.

4. Place an empty bucket directly under the wastewater pipe, located under the kitchen sink. Pull the dishwasher drainage pipe off the wastewater pipe. The drainage pipe is usually ribbed and is located at the back of the dishwasher. It simply pulls off. This will cause the water to drain out of the machine and into the bucket.

5. Replace the dishwasher drainage pipe onto the waste pipe under the sink. Ensure the drainage pipe is not kinked and has a clear route to the waste pipe. Empty the bucket. Reassmble the dishwasher filter, filter guard and racks.

6. Turn the dishwasher on and use as normal.

Dish Washer Leaks When Draining

Fix a seeping dishwasher as quickly as possible.

In case your cabinets all of a sudden spring a leak, there's a strong possibility that you may have trouble with your dishwasher. Most dish washers possess a drain hose that snakes back through cabinets towards the drain. In case your dishwasher leaks when draining, you will find two primary dishwasher components to have a look at: the dishwasher drain hose and also the dishwasher drain pump.

How Dish washers Operate

Dish washers pull in water in the house water supply via a supply hose. Once within the dishwasher, water mixes with dish-washing cleaning soap. This mix will be pumped via a spray arm that distributes water all around the dishes. The dirty dishwater will be pumped out. The dishwasher follows this having a rinse cycle of plain water. This water is pumped out following a clean cycle.

Drain Hose Connections

A drain hose connects the dishwasher pump towards the inlet on the waste disposer or even the tailpiece beneath the sink. The drain hose is attached at either finish by hose clamps. The finish from the hose situated underneath the dishwasher is usually installed and set up in the factory. The alternative finish from the dishwasher hose has markings onto it along with a tapered finish that enables so that it is cut to suit different sizes of pipe basins.

Dishwasher Access

The drain hose finish and also the drain pump on the dishwasher are generally contained underneath the dishwasher cabinet. To be able to access these parts to exchange them, you will need to take away the kick panel at the end from the dishwasher, underneath the dishwasher door. This panel takes place in position by screws in the sides.

Dishwasher Hose Leaks

Check along the size of the dishwasher hose for any leak. With time, a dishwasher hose can crack and split, leading to leaks. As this hose also goes through cabinets, it may sometimes have heavy dishes or plates focused on it that break the hose's integrity. Repair a seeping dishwasher hose beginning with switching off the electricity towards the dishwasher in the primary circuit breaker. Take away the hose clamps at either finish from the hose after which change it with a brand new hose, acquiring it with hose clamps.

Dishwasher Pump

When the leak appears to become coming initially from from beneath the dishwasher, the reason might be a seeping pump. Open the dishwasher cabinet and disconnect wartrol arm by getting rid of wartrol arm bolt within the center. Take out the wiring harness along the side of the dishwasher pump with a set of pliers. Release the hose clamp and accomplish the drain hose. Disconnect the pump in the bottom from the cabinet by helping to loosen the bolts having a socket wrench. Install the brand new pump by curing the procedure you accustomed to take apart that old pump.

Stove Top Grid Cleaning Secrets

Stove top grids require regular cleaning.

Putting off cleaning a greasy, messy stove top grid turns what could be an easy task into an arduous chore that requires a lot of elbow grease. The key to cleaning a stove top is to do it when you can still feel the heat from your cooking. Taking the "chore" out of stove top grid cleaning is a matter of knowing what to use to clean the mess away.

Soap and Water

Soap and water may be enough to do the job with a little added heat. Applying liquid soap directly to the stove top grid and then heating it back up will cause the soap to react with the grease and stuck-on food. As it starts to bubble, add a little water to help loosen the mess. A light scrub with a scouring brush will further loosen any remaining debris, and a simple wipe-up will remove the debris and clean the stove top grid.

Baking Soda

When you mix baking soda with fat, it makes a very mild form of soap. According to Chemistryquestion.com, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is the weakest of sodium compound alkali, but it has the ability to partially saponify the fat component of dirt, making it easier to wash away. Applying baking soda directly to a greasy stove top grid will work to break down the grease. Let it sit for a while on the stove top, and then apply heat and scour the stove top grid until it comes clean.

Cornstarch

A paste made of cornstarch and water is a simple recipe for cleaning stove tops, according to Bidmycleaning.com. Allow the cornstarch to sit on the stove top grids to absorb grease. Its mildly abrasive properties may also loosen baked-on grease when you use it with a scouring pad.

Oven Cleaner

When all else fails, and if you don't clean your stove top grid well in between uses, the job may call for a quick treatment with oven cleaner. Select a brand that has minimal fumes, ventilate the kitchen well and wear a face mask and rubber gloves for this job.

Apply the oven cleaner directly to the stove top grid so it soaks into the baked-on grease just as it does on the oven walls. After a few minutes, use a scouring pad to loosen the grease and food. A little heat will also speed up its effects, and once it is clean, wash it with soap and water before you use the stove again.

After Care

To prevent future heavy cleaning tasks of your stove top grid, rub its surface with olive oil and heat it well to season it. This will make it have a somewhat non-stick surface.

Dishwasher Clogged With Grease

Keep your dishwasher in good condition by preventing clogs from occuring.

Dishwasher drains become clogged for a variety of reasons, but grease and food happen to be two of the main culprits. When you leave leftover food and grease on your dishes before you place them into the appliance, the dishwasher rinses all of the debris off the dishes. The debris then lands on the bottom of the dishwasher and finds its way into the drain hose. Once the drain hose becomes clogged or obstructed, it needs to be fixed quickly to prevent damage to the appliance.

Quick Fix

Open the dishwasher and look inside carefully. Inspect the bottom of the dishwasher and the area around the drain hose for grease and food residue. Wipe the interior of the dishwasher with paper towels to remove the grease. When you wipe the inside of the dishwasher, you may find sharp objects such as glass obstructing the drain pipe. Remove these items carefully. If the dishwasher remains clogged, you will need to remove the drain hose.

Drain Hoses

Unplug the dishwasher from the electrical outlet to prevent any accidents. Remove the kick plate underneath the dishwasher door to access the hose. You might have to consult your dishwasher owner's manual. Look for the drain hose with a flashlight. The drain hose typically is located under the spraying arm. Place a bowl or pan under the hose and disconnect it by removing the clamp off the hose with pliers. Insert a long bristle brush or plumber's snake into the hose to remove debris or run pressurized water directly down into the hose. Reconnect the hose and run the dishwasher.

Plumber

If you do not feel comfortable disconnecting the drain hose or if you are unsuccessful, you need to call a licensed plumber. While you may feel like the dishwasher contains clogged grease, there are varieties of other reasons why the water may not be draining. The pump motor may not be running properly, the water valve may be leaking or the hose may actually have a kink in it that you cannot reach. The dishwasher may also connect under the sink or to the garbage disposal, which can be part of the problem. If you cannot afford to call a plumber, consult your owner manual and call the manufacturer for advice on fix the problem.

Prevention

Always remove large pieces of food from dishes before you place them into the dishwasher. Scrape off pieces of food and bones into the trash and rinse the dishes to remove large chunks of food and residue. Always empty liquids from glasses and scrape off burned food. Allowing these items to go into the dishwasher can clog the drain hose and prevent the dishwasher from draining.

Jar Corn From The Cob

The fresher the corn, the better tasting the jarred kernels will be.

Having a stocked pantry of preserved food is a great coup as you can enjoy fruits and vegetables all year, regardless of the produce season. You can take advantage of an abundant corn harvest by canning the kernels in jars, all from the comfort of your own home. As soon as the corn cobs are picked, they can be jarred using regular canning methods. The only difference is knowing the right tricks for getting the kernels of the cob without a lot of hassle. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Peel off the husks and silk from the corn cobs and drop them into a large pot of boiling water, five cobs at a time. Leave each batch of cobs in the water for three minutes before removing them and cooling them immediately in a bowl of ice water. Boil and cool all of the corn in the same way

2. Stand one of the cobs on its end and cut off the kernels using a sharp knife. You need to get off three-quarters of the kernels depth which will allow you to avoid cutting into the cob. If your kernels are 1/2 inch deep, cut off 3/8 inches of the kernel.

3. Cut off the kernels from all of the cobs and put all of the kernels into a pot. Simmer the kernels for five minutes then drain them in a colander.

4. Put 1 tsp. of salt into each of the canning jars then fill the jars with corn kernels. Leave 1 inch of space at the top of each jar. This inch is called head space and allows for expansion during canning.

5. Pour boiling water into each of the jars to cover the kernels. Make sure to leave the inch of space at the top after pouring in water. Remove some of the kernels if there is not enough space.

6. Stick a silicone spatula down the inside of the jar to remove any pockets of air and allow the corn to settle. Wipe the openings of the jars dry with a towel and place a seal on each one. Secure the seals in place with canning rings.

7. Fill the pressure canner with enough water so there is a 6 inch layer on the bottom then place the canning rack inside. Put each of the jars into the canner so they are resting on the rack using a jar lifter. Make sure no jar is touching the one next to it.

8. Place the canner on your stove and let it boil for 10 minutes with the vent open to allow the steam to come out. Put the canner weight into the vent after 10 minutes to create pressure inside the canner.

9. Wait for the correct pressure to read on the pressure gauge. For altitudes up to 1,000 feet wait for 10 lbs., or 11 lbs. from 1,000 to 2,000 feet. Use 12 lb. at 2,000 to 4,000 feet, 13 lbs. at 4,000 to 6,000 feet and 14 lbs. for 6,000 to 8,000 feet. Above 8,000 feet requires 15 lbs.

10. Turn off the canner after 85 minutes and wait for the pressure to return to zero. Once it has no pressure, you can remove the weight and open the canner. Remove the jars from the canner with a jar lifter and set them onto a towel to cool off for at least 24 hours before removing the canning rings.

Reset A Norcold Control Board

The first time the code appears, turn the unit off and on.

Norcold makes small refrigerators that are commonly found in RVs and boats. When the refrigerator is showing a "No Cooling" error code the unit must be repaired. There could be any number of reasons for the code to appear. When the repair is finished, the last step is to reset a Norcold control board to clear the error. If this is not the first time the error code has occurred, the process to reset a Norcold control board is more involved.

Instructions

1. Turn the refrigerator "off " and unplug the power cable.

2. Pull the unit out to access the back.

3. Disconnect the wires plugged into the power board on the back of the unit in the following order: 12Vdc positive and negative wires, AC power supply cord, the Solenoid gas valve wire and the spark/sense electrode assembly wire. Each wire is labeled. Grab each wire by the plug (not the wire) and pull the plug from the socket in the power board.

4. Remove the four screws in the corners of the power board cover with a Phillips head screwdriver and pull the power board cover off.

5. Plug the following wires back into the power board in the following order: spark/sense electrode assembly wire, Solenoid gas valve wire, AC cable and 12Vdc positive and negative wires.

6. Plug the refrigerator in and turn it "On."

7. Insert one end of a jumper wire into the socket to the right of the white/violet wire on the wire harness (Pin 15) and touch the other end of the wire to one of the bolts mounting the power board to the unit for 10 to 15 seconds or until a "click" is heard. A jumper wire is a length of electrical wire with 1/8-inch of the core exposed at each end.

8. Remove the jumper wire.

9. Turn the refrigerator "Off" and unplug the power cord.

10. Disconnect the wires plugged into the power board in the following order: 12Vdc positive and negative wires, AC power supply cord, the Solenoid gas valve wire and the spark/sense electrode assembly wire.

11. Screw the power board cover back into place.

12. Plug the following wires back into the power board in the following order: spark/sense electrode assembly wire, Solenoid gas valve wire, AC cable and 12Vdc positive and negative wires.

13. Plug the refrigerator in and turn it "On." If there is still an error code, repeat the process until it is cleared.

Clean The Vinyl Trim Or The Rubber Trim On Rvs

RVs are a great way to relax and enjoy a no-rush vacation while taking advantage of the money-saving opportunity to view the countryside without having to pay for an expensive hotel room. RVs spend so much time on the road traveling that they often become layered with filth and grime caused by road dirt, exhaust and flying debris. You will need to regularly detail your RV in order to get the exterior vinyl or rubber trim looking clean and fresh again.

Instructions

1. Find a shady spot to clean your RV under that has access to water. Examine the exterior of your RV for any mold, mildew or other harsh marks or staining, especially in areas where the vinyl trim meets with the roofline.

2. Combine a solution in equal parts of liquid bleach, dishwashing detergent and water in a spray bottle and spritz over areas of extreme soiling on your vinyl trim. Use a soft RV brush to scrub the area thoroughly. Rinse with clean water.

3. Add 1/3 cup of dishwashing detergent to each gallon of water you use in a bucket. Dip a large sponge into the solution and uniformly clean the exterior of the RV, making sure the soap solution does not dry before you have time to rinse it off. Scrub remaining tough areas with the scrub brush to remove excess soiling.

4. Use the spray nozzle on a hose or a pressure washer to thoroughly rinse the siding. If using a pressure washer, stand at a distance of 4 feet and do not use temperatures exceeding 120 degrees.

5. Dress your RV trim with a protectant such as 303 Aerospace Protectant, following the manufacturer's instructions.

My Ge Triton Dishwasher Will Not Drain

If your GE Triton dishwasher will not drain, you'll be left with a pool of standing water in the appliance and dishes that are still dirty. Determining the cause of the drainage problem may eliminate the need to call an appliance repair service.

Power

If a GE Triton dishwasher loses power due to a tripped circuit breaker, the unit may not drain properly if in the middle of a cleaning cycle. Push the Start button on the GE Triton dishwasher to reset the appliance once the electricity starts running again.

Drainage

If your Triton dishwasher has a clog in the drain valve, you may try running your garbage disposal see if the disposal clears any debris blockages. GE also recommends checking to see if the drainage line contains an air gap. If you notice that the water from your sink is also backed up, you may need a professional plumbing service.

Considerations

A small amount of water normally pools in the bottom of the GE Triton dishwasher tub. This water lubricates the water seal outlet, according to GE.

Calculate The Wire Gauge Needed To Make An Extension Cord

Wire gauge determines the safe operating current in an extension cord.

The gauge of a wire refers to its cross-sectional area. American wire gauge, or AWG, uses numbers of increasing size to identify thinner wires. Cross-sectional area influences the resistance of a wire to a current flowing along it. As area decreases, resistance increases and the wire becomes hotter. The gauge expresses the thickness of a wire so AWG relates to the maximum safe current load in the wire. Finding the AWG for an extension cord is a straightforward process.

Instructions

1. Establish the total number of watts drawn by the appliances connected to the extension cord. Most appliances and power tools display a plaque giving details of their operating voltage and maximum wattage. If more than one appliance will run contemporaneously, combine their wattages. For example, an extension cord powering a 100-watt light, a 2,000-watt electric drill and a 1,000-watt heater must cope with a combined wattage of 100 + 2,000 + 1,000, or 3,100 watts.

2. Determine the voltage supply to be used with the cord. Cords used with 220-volt receptacles must have 220 volt ratings. Using 110 volt cord with higher voltages is unsafe. Use Ohm's Law, watts/voltage = current, to find the current drawn by the appliance. For example, 3,100 watts/110 volts equals a current of 28.2 amps.

3. Calculate the AWG using the formula AWG = 50 - (10 * log (700 * current)). For example, to find the AWG for a wire to carry 30 amps, AWG = 50 * (10- log (700*30). This reduces to 50 * (10 - log (21,000)), or 50 - 10*4.3. The AWG is, therefore 50 - 43, or 7.

4. Decrease the AWG by one step for every additional 100 feet of cable to compensate for voltage drop. If the extension cord is 100 feet long, and the calculations suggest using 12 gauge, use 11 gauge cord. If it is 200 feet long, use 10 gauge, and so on.

Repair A Warped Cd

CDs are partly made of plastic, and if you accidentally leave one on your dashboard or in your car trunk (and you'd only do that by accident, right?), it could get more warped than your taste in music. Since CD players prefer perfectly flat discs, that's a problem--but one that may be fixable.

Instructions

1. Inspect the CD for cracks. If the airtight seal is broken, then the aluminum inside the disc will corrode regardless of whether you can get the CD flat again. (See Restore a CD.)

2. If the CD isn't cracked, clean it carefully with a soft cloth, making sure it's free of debris.

3. If the CD is only slightly warped, try sandwiching it between two pieces of 1/4-inch (6-mm) window glass and pressing it beneath a 10-lb. (5-kg) stack of books for two or three days.

4. If the heavy books alone don't work, try warming up the disc to soften the plastic first. Place the disc in a zipper-lock plastic bag and immerse it in 100°F (38°C) water for 5 minutes. Repeat the book pressing.

5. If you succeed in flattening a warped disc, it's a smart idea to make a copy of it, in case the airtight seal was broken and the disc later starts to corrode.

The Consumption Of Electrical Energy By Home Appliances

Old appliances are not energy-efficient.

Energy efficiency of home appliances has improved in the last ten years. In fact, the National Resources Defense Council reports that refrigerators made in the last 12 years use half the energy of their older counterparts. The federal government has encouraged the purchase of new appliances with tax incentives and rebate offers in an effort to reduce energy consumption. Some home appliances take less energy because they do not require heating elements; others, such as water heaters, are major consumers of your energy dollars.

High Energy Appliances

Heating and cooling units take the largest percentage of electrical energy. Whether you live in the north and use electricity for heating or in the south and use it for cooling, it is a major expense. Energy Star reports that heating consumes 29 percent of your electricity use and cooling takes 17 percent.

Energy Star heating and cooling appliances lower your electrical energy cost. The Energy Guide provided with appliances compares annual electricity use before you make a purchase. A water heater accounts for about 14 percent of your energy use, according to the Energy Star website. This energy user ranks third, behind only heating and cooling expenses. Using less hot water is a recommended way to save energy along with other energy-efficient appliances.

Medium Energy Appliances

A refrigerator takes more energy than most appliances in the medium range but newer models of Energy Star refrigerators have better insulation and more efficient compressors than earlier models. The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy suggests that a top-mounted freezer is more efficient than a side-by-side.

A dishwasher consumes about 7 percent of its total energy use with the heat dry at the end of the cycle. Purchase a dishwasher with a no-heat drying cycle choice to save energy. New models of clothes washers and dryers take less energy than older ones but all of your medium-energy appliances combined take about as much energy as the water heater, according to the Energy Star website.

Electronics Use Little Energy

Because most of your electronics do not function on heat, all of the computers, televisions and games in your home take about 4 percent of your total energy use. Electronics that require a transformer take more energy than non-transformer electronics, reports The Natural Resources Defense Council. An ink-jet printer takes less energy than a laser and plasma screens take more power than an LCD monitor or television screen.

Save Energy

To save energy with appliances start with the high energy users to reduce consumption. Change the filter for your heating and air conditioning regularly and close gaps in the duct work. When you replace an electrical appliance, use Energy Star and the Energy Guide for help in comparison-shopping.

Consider buying a gas water heater and a gas clothes dryer. You might even consider gas logs for a fireplace to supplement your electric heating unit. Purchase the correct size appliance for your home. A full freezer is more efficient than one with open spaces. A refrigerator larger than you need takes energy to cool the empty space as well.

Why Will A Maytag Quiet Series 100 Dishwasher Not Dry

The Maytag Corporation was an independent company until 2006, when the Whirlpool Corporation bought it. Whirlpool still sells certain appliances under the Maytag brand, including dishwashers. Maytag offered the Quiet Series 100 model dishwashers, but the company no longer manufactures this series. If your dishwasher isn't drying, troubleshoot the problem, since you can often fix the issue. This saves you money on service fees.

Normal Operation

Your Maytag Quiet Series 100 dishwasher won't dry your dishes if you select a non-heated dry setting like "Air dry." Use a rinse aid to assist with the drying process, and do not overload your dishwasher. Too many dishes in the unit block air from freely moving around, which prevents dishes from drying. Unload the bottom rack first to prevent water trapped in cups from falling on your bottom dishes. Certain dishes including plastic and nonstick items hardly ever completely dry.

Water Temperature/Drying Fan

Increase your water temperature if it's too cold, which can also affect the drying process. Use water between 120 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Increase the water temperature on your water heater if it's too cold. Test the water temperature by placing a waterproof thermometer underneath water from the kitchen faucet. Run the hot water for about two minutes, and see if the water is warm enough. Check the drying fan, which is located in the main housing of your dishwasher. The fan circulates warm air around your dishes. Clean the fan if dirt is preventing it from turning properly. If any of the fan blades are broken or if the motor is defective, replace the whole fan, since it's difficult to repair.

Thermostat

Your Maytag Quiet Series 100 dishwasher has an internal thermostat that regulates the water and drying temperature. If this thermostat is not working properly, the drying cycle may not start. Test the thermostat by running the dishwasher at the highest temperature. Use the shortest washing cycle available. Open the dishwasher, and see if the water is warm. If it's not, order a new thermostat from a Kenmore parts dealer, since this component is difficult to repair.

Heating Element

The heating element is responsible for drying your dishes. If this element is not working properly, then your dishes won't dry. Disconnect the dishwasher from the power supply, and remove the bottom rack. The heating element runs along the base of your dishwasher. If the heating element is burnt out or cracked, order a new one, since you usually can't repair this part.
