Winterize A Park Model Rv

Winterize a Park Model RV

A park model camper or RV can provide enjoyment during the summer months but it can quickly become a headache when the temperatures dip below freezing. Finding a leak in the plumbing system in your RV in the spring is enough to spoil the fun of your first camping trip of the season. Winterizing your RV is a simple process that can prevent problems with the plumbing system and save you time and money.

Instructions

1. Turn off the hot water heater. Remove the fuse or turn the breaker off as a precaution. This will prevent damage to the water heater element.

2. Locate the plug or pull valve. It will be located on or near the water heater. Drain the hot water tank. Locate the pressure relief valve and open it. This allows air to enter the tank as the water exits.

3. Locate the hot water heater bypass valves. The upper and lower valves should be closed. The middle valve should be opened. Bypassing the hot water heater will reduce the cost of winterizing. If you bypass the hot water heater you will not have to fill the water tank with antifreeze.

4. Drain the water from your plumbing system. The low point drains will be located near the city water hookup. Remove the plugs and replace them after the water has drained.

5. Turn the toilet valve to the off position and flush the toilet several times to remove water from the lines.

6. Use a water pump to add antifreeze to the plumbing system. Insert the pump into the antifreeze and connect it to the city water intake. Open a faucet inside the RV. Turn the faucet off when you see antifreeze. Repeat this process for all faucets. Be sure to turn on the hot and cold water on each faucet.

7. Open the toilet valve to add antifreeze to the float. Turn off the valve and pour a full gallon of antifreeze into the toilet tank. Flush the toilet to push antifreeze into the bowl and base.

8. Add antifreeze to all p-traps. Pour a cup of antifreeze down each sink drain and tub or shower.

9. Winterize all appliances that use water. If you have an ice maker, allow the antifreeze to fill the ice tray in the refrigerator and turn it off.

10. Start a cycle on your dishwasher and washing machine. Allow the washing machine to spin for 30 seconds. Turn off the power. Advance the dishwasher to the rinse cycle before turning off the power.
