Run On Solar Power

Solar panels capture sunlight and convert it into electricity.

Solar power provides an alternate energy source for electric appliances and devices. Solar power equipment ranges in size from small panels to charge cell phones and other similarly sized devices to large complex arrays to power buildings. Solar energy is free and many companies offer turnkey solar power solutions for residential use. Others use smaller solar kits as backups for short-term power loss.

Instructions

1. Determine your power needs. Every electrical device requires a minimum level of wattage in order to run. Cell phones, netbooks and other devices have relatively small requirements. Companies like ThinkGeek and Radioshack sell small, portable solar recharging kits with built-in storage batteries. For residential use, you must budget each appliance's energy needs. You must estimate the the total energy consumption of lights, refrigerators, stoves, heaters and computers. Providers of turnkey residential power will develop quotes based on their study of your home. Smaller solar kits can provide emergency power in the event of a temporary power loss.

2. Install the photo-voltaic panels. To be most effective, the panels should face south. Take trees, buildings and other obstructions into account to ensure maximum sunlight during the day. You can install smaller panels on tracking swivels to move them with the sun during the day. You can move emergency solar kits by hand.

3. Connect the panels. Larger residential kits often connect directly to a commercial power grid. In many cases the homeowner sells excess power back to the power company. Solar power users wishing to be off the power grid require batteries to store the electricity they generate but don't immediately use. Inverters convert the stored energy into standard 110v AC to power devices and appliances.
