Clean Cast Iron Grates For A Whirlpool 465

The Whirlpool 465, also known as the Whirlpool Super Capacity 465, is a gas range featuring porcelain-clad, cast-iron burner grates. The porcelain provides cooks with a smooth surface that not only distributes heat evenly, but also wipes clean with a damp cloth or sponge. Food or other debris, metal pot or pan transfer marks and gas burning white ash can build up on the porcelain surfaces if not cleaned regularly. As a result, to clean the cast-iron grates you must thoroughly wash and scrub the grates to remove any existing debris and stains, and then wipe clean the grates after each use.

Instructions

1. Turn off your Whirlpool Super Capacity 465 Gas Range if necessary.

2. Remove the grates from the range top and position in the bottom rack of your dishwasher. Wash on a normal cycle with glassware or plastics positioned in the top rack. When the cycle ends, go to Step 6. If you want to wash the grates by hand, skip this step.

3. Fill your kitchen sink with warm water and add mild detergent to the water (enough to make it soapy). Place one of the grates in the water and soak for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. If the grate is encrusted with food, soak approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

4. Scrub the grate with a non-abrasive scrubbing pad to remove stains, food or other debris, or metal transfer marks from pots and pans. If the scrubbing pad doesn't clean the grate surfaces thoroughly, sprinkle baking soda onto the area and scrub again; or apply a commercial non-abrasive porcelain or grate cleaner to the area. Wait five to 10 minutes and scrub.

5. Rinse the grate thoroughly under running tap water to remove all detergent and debris residue.

6. Wipe the grates completely dry with a soft, lint-free cloth---paying close attention to any scratched, cracked or chipped areas---until you no longer see or feel moisture on the porcelain surfaces.

7. Repeat the cleaning process---washing, rinsing and drying---on the other grates if you washed the grates by hand. If you didn't hand wash the grates, skip this step.

8. Clean the range top around the burners and burner caps with a slightly soapy cloth or sponge. Rinse the soapy areas with damp cloths and wipe completely dry.

9. Return the clean grates to the range top.
