Whirlpool makes a line of dishwashers that includes many different models. If you have a Whirlpool dishwasher and there is a grinding noise when it is in use, you may be able to repair the problem yourself without calling an appliance repair technician. In most cases a grinding noise is caused by a hard object, such as a piece of cutlery, caught in the grinder. This can not only make noise but can damage the dishwasher and must be removed.
Instructions
1. Open the Whirlpool dishwasher door and remove the racks to give yourself plenty of work room.
2. Locate the pump housing on the bottom center of the Whirlpool dishwasher floor. The grinder is located under the housing.
3. Remove the Phillips screws that secure the housing to the Whirlpool dishwasher floor. On some models, the housing may pry off using a standard screwdriver. Lift off the housing to reveal the grinder.
4. Inspect the grinder well for foreign objects and remove any bits of metal or cutlery that may be restricting the grinder. Replace the housing and racks.
