The home dishwasher is an appliance that really saves you time, but it also uses quite a bit of water. With droughts decreasing many water sources and the cost of energy usage rising, it pays to use your dishwasher wisely. Helping your dishwasher perform its job more efficiently helps you to conserve water and lower your utility bills. Several simple changes can help you to conserve water and still use your home dishwasher.
Instructions
1. Don't rinse or soak your dishes before putting them in your dishwasher. Use your silverware or a paper towel to scrape the larger chunks of food or bone into the trash can. Only soak the dishes with dried-on or burned-on foods.
2. Only run full loads in your home dishwasher. Your dishwasher uses the same amount of water whether it contains a full load or just a few dishes. The Colorado State University Extension estimates that you can save about 1,000 gallons of water each month if you only turn on your dishwasher when it's full.
3. Don't overload your home dishwasher. Every dish must be exposed to the water spray or you'll end up using even more water to rewash the load. Don't nest bowls or plates. Make sure that your silverware isn't crammed into the utensil holder.
4. Don't use your dishwasher's pre-rinse cycle. This setting uses an extra 3 to 7 gallons of water each time you use it, reports the North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension.
5. Use the water saver cycle on your dishwasher. This cycle uses far less water than normal or extended cycles because it has shorter washing and rinsing times. The Utah State University Cooperative Extension reports that you can save up to 30 percent on your water usage just by regularly using this cycle.
6. Clean your home dishwasher regularly. Your dishwasher needs routine cleaning to prevent debris and hard water stains from building up and reducing its water efficiency. Check the filter and remove any trapped particles. Use an abrasive sponge or cloth to wipe off the water jets and spray-arm nozzles.
