Clean Dishwasher Float Switches

The float switch should be removed for proper cleaning.

A float switch helps a dishwasher regulate the amount of water in the basin during a wash cycle. The basin water causes the float device to lift. It activates the float switch once it reaches a certain level. The float switch then shuts off the water flow so that the dishwasher doesn't get too much water in it. A dirty float switch may malfunction and cleaning it helps it perform better and last longer.

Instructions

1. Turn off the power to your dishwasher and shut off the breaker to ensure there is no electricity going to the machine while you remove the float switch.

2. Remove the kick plate below the dishwasher door to access the float switch. The specific method varies per model, but you may need to open the dishwasher and unscrew the plate from the inside.

3. Locate the float switch underneath the float assembly inside the dishwasher. It is normally located on the left or right at the bottom of the float device. It has two wires connected to it.

4. Pull the two wires off of the float switch with needle-nose pliers. Avoid pulling on the wires themselves. Instead focus the pliers on the connectors that hold the wires to the switch. Remove the switch once the wires are disconnected by either undoing a clasp holding it to the float or by unscrewing it, depending on the design.

5. Run a toothbrush under hot water and then dip it into white vinegar. Scrub the float switch with the brush to remove any food debris, detergent residue and grime. White vinegar is mildly acidic and works well as a cleaning agent that won't damage the switch. Rinse the switch under regular water once you are finished.

6. Reconnect the switch to the float and reconnect the wires. Close the dishwasher door and restore the power.
