Connect An L14 30 Plug To An Rv 30 Amp Pigtail

Connect an L14- 30 Plug to an RV 30 Amp Pigtail

NEMA, or the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, is responsible for the standards that ensure various equipment manufacturers’ products will work together and fit together. NEMA is the reason all the regular outlets in your house are the same, and that all your electronics have plugs that fit them. In addition to the usual 15-amp, 110-volt outlets and plugs, NEMA governs larger plug types as well and designates all the plugs according to the confiuration of the poles (the connectors that make contact to complete the circuit) and the amperage they are rated for. The L14-30 plug is one example of a four-pole plug that is rated for 30 amps. Installing one in an RV is similar to installing one in a home, except the 10-gauge wire required for the outlet will be coming from the RV’s fuse box "pigtail" instead of a circuit breaker panel.

Instructions

1. Turn off power to the circuit you’re installing the plug on by removing the fuse for that circuit.

2. Unscrew the front of the plug unit to reveal the four connectors inside.

3. Feed the cable through the back of the plug body.

4. Using the wire strippers, strip 1/2 inch off the ends of the wires inside the electrical cable.

5. Feed the black and red wires into the brass connectors and tighten the screws on both to secure them in place.

6. Feed the white wire into the silver-colored connector and tighten that screw as well, to secure the neutral wire.

7. Feed the bare copper ground wire into the remaining terminal connector, and tighten that screw.

8. Screw the front onto the plug with the supplied screws and your screwdrivers.

9. Turn the power back on to the circuit by replacing the fuse to begin using your new 30 amp outlet.
