Install Granite Counters On A Plywood Subbase

Being able to install granite counters is a valuable skill.

Granite countertops add an aesthetic appeal to your home, and they will greatly increase your property value. Granite countertops are an investment, but they are a worthwhile one. The cost of granite is constantly rising, so having the skills to install the granite yourself will be valuable and useful.

Instructions

1. Make sure the plywood sub-base on your cabinets is level. Use a level to check all directions on the sub-base, right to left, front to back and both diagonals.

2. Apply silicone caulk to the sub-base using a caulking gun. Apply the silicone in evenly spaced mounds on the surface of the sub-base. Space each mound about 6 to 8 inches apart. Each mound of silicone should be a circle approximately 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Estimate approximately 1 tube for every 2 linear feet of countertop.

3. Place the countertop onto the sub-base. Push down firmly on the countertop to ensure the silicone bonds to the countertop and to the sub-base. Allow the silicone to dry before using the countertop. Drying time for silicone will differ; check the instructions of whichever silicone you purchase. The weight of the granite alone will be sufficient for the adhesion purposes of the silicone.
