Dishwasher Detergent Recipes

You can save money by easily making your own nontoxic household cleaners. Making your own dishwasher detergent is an environmentally safe and cost-effective way to do the dishes. Consider cutting your grocery bill by trying a few simple recipes for liquid or powder detergents.

Baking Soda and Borax

You can make a cost-effective dishwasher detergent out of simple ingredients. All you need to do is mix one cup of baking soda and one cup of borax. Put the powder into a plastic container for storage. When you are ready to wash the dishes, put two tablespoons of the powder into the dishwasher. If you notice a residue on your dishes, put about one tablespoon of vinegar into the rinse compartment. You can even add a few drops of essential oils to the vinegar for fragrance. Making your own dishwasher detergent is beneficial because you know exactly what is going on your dishes. This is a non-toxic, environmentally friendly recipe. Using baking soda in this recipe is a more mild substance than other washing agents, such as washing soda.

Easy Powder

You also can use five ingredients to make your own dishwasher detergent. Mix one-half cup of borax, one-half cup of washing soda, one-fourth of a cup of citric acid and one-fourth of a cup of kosher salt in a 32-ounce plastic container. Mix the powders thoroughly. Put a lid on the container and shake the mixture. Use one tablespoon of mixture per load. This recipe is different from the previous powder recipe because the washing soda is a stronger washing agent then baking soda. Although washing soda does not give off harmful fumes, you may need to wear gloves because it can irritate your hands. If you have harsh stains on your clothes, this recipe is better then the previous because of the soda powder.

Liquid Detergent

You can make a liquid detergent out of one-half cup of castille soap (do not use regular liquid soap or your dishwasher will overflow), one-half cup of water, one teaspoon of fresh lemon juice, three dropsof tea tree extract and one-half of a cup of white vinegar. Mix all of the ingredients together so that you have a smooth mixture. Store the liquid detergent in a squirt-top bottle. Use two tablespoons of the mixture per load.
