Repair Rust On The White Coating Of A Dishwasher Basket

Careful loading of a dishwasher prevents nicks in its protective coating.

Dishwashers are designed to wash and clean dishes with minimal manual handling required. If pans or utensils are loaded insecurely or incorrectly into the dishwasher baskets, they could shift and nick the white protective coating on the baskets, exposing the metal underneath to the wet conditions inside the dishwasher. Over time, the metal starts to rust and can eventually leave brownish red rust deposits on dishes. Repairing rust on the white coating of a dishwasher basket involves leaving the dishwasher inactive for more than a day, so wash any dirty dishes prior to the cleaning.

Instructions

1. Scrub any rusted areas with steel wool to remove loose rust.

2. Saturate salt with lime juice until it creates a paste. Apply the salt/lime paste to the rusted area on the dishwasher rack. Allow the paste to sit for three hours.

3. Wipe the paste from the rack with a damp paper towel. Rub the paper towel along the length of the rack repeatedly to remove any stubborn rust.

4. Rinse the dishwasher rack. Dry the rack off with a paper towel.

5. Apply dishwasher-safe touch-up paint, found at most appliance or hardware stores, to the treated areas. Ensure all nicks in the white coating and any formerly rusted areas are covered completely by the paint. Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours before using the dishwasher.
