Replace Rubber Stripping On A Dishwasher

Rubber dishwasher stripping prevents leaks.

The rubber stripping along the inside door area of a dishwasher is called a gasket and prevents water from leaking outside of the dishwasher during operation. Just like other rubber products, gaskets eventually develop cracks or stretch out, which results in drips or pools of water on the floor under the door. Removing and replacing the rubber stripping can be done once you purchase a new one that matches your specific dishwasher model.

Instructions

1. Lay a towel on the floor under the dishwasher to catch any drips. Open the door to the dishwasher completely so that you can see inside of it. You typically don't need to remove the baskets from the dishwasher although you can to create more workroom.

2. Locate the rubber stripping that runs along the perimeter of the dishwasher tub opening. Grasp the stripping with your hand and pull it away from the dishwasher until it pops free from the track. Continue working your way around the perimeter of the tub until the entire rubber strip detaches. Throw the old strip in the garbage.

3. Take the new rubber stripping and locate a small mark or line on it that indicates the center point. Turn the gasket so that the thin projecting lip points upward.

4. Push the marked area up into the center top of the dishwasher track until the lip is no longer visible and the strip stays in place.

5. Hold the strip in place with your left hand and use your right hand to push the right side of the strip into the track all the way down to the door. Repeat the process on the left side of the door.

6. Insert each lower end of the strip into the wire that runs along the bottom of the door and tuck the wire under the dishwasher door. This is not required in all dishwasher models and is not necessary if your appliance does not have a wire.
