Homemade dishwasher detergents do not have the harsh chemicals that are typically found in commercial detergents. Instead, they use simple household items that are less toxic to you, your family and the environment but will still clean your dishes successfully.
Instructions
Powder Dishwasher Detergent Recipe
1. Mix together 1 cup of washing soda with 1 cup of Borax. Alternatively, use 1 cup of baking soda instead of the washing soda.
2. Pour the homemade dishwasher detergent into a container with a lid. Store in a cool, dry place.
3. Use 2 tbsp. of the detergent for every load of dishes.
4. Fill the rinse compartment with vinegar. The vinegar will help prevent residue on the dishes.
Liquid Dishwasher Detergent Recipe
5. Mix together 1 part borax and 1 part baking soda. Add 1 part water to the mixture. Combine the contents thoroughly with a wooden spoon.
6. Add 1 drop of either orange essential oil or lemon essential oil per cup of the mixture. Mix together thoroughly with the wooden spoon.
7. Pour the homemade dishwasher detergent into a pourable container with a lid.
8. Use 3 tbsp. of the liquid detergent for every load of dishes.
