Information On Kitchen Designs

Overhead lighting that properly illuminates the food prep areas is an essential part of kitchen design.

The design of the conventional kitchen is based upon one of five basic layouts. These layouts include the single wall design, kitchens shaped like the letters "G," "L" or "U" and galley units in which appliances and cabinets occupy walls on either side of a corridor. Most of these layouts can be enhanced with the addition of a center island. Design elements can be added or enhanced within the confines of any of these different starting points, and a number of design elements should be taken into consideration to ensure the most efficient place for preparing and cooking food.

Use Existing Plumbing

Planning your layout around existing plumbing is a real saver of both money and time if your kitchen will be designed around existing pipes. The introduction of new plumbing can be a drain on the budget that is better spent on upgraded appliances and stylish d cor. The labor involved in creating a new plumbing scheme can also extend the length of time the kitchen takes to be completed.

Blocking Dishwasher Noise

The design of a kitchen affords the perfect opportunity to situate the dishwasher as far away from a kitchen dining area as possible. Incorporate some kind of soundproofing barrier that can range from a half wall to a simple screen to reduce the amplification of this appliance that can potentially be quite loud. If you don't plan to do any eating inside the kitchen, this will not be an issue except in relation to how it affects enjoyment of kitchen tasks when the dishwasher is running.

Proper Door Clearance

Take fully into account the clearance that is necessary for appliance doors and cabinet doors to open without interfering with the work traffic. Efficiency can be heightened by taking the time to avoid winding up with a situation where you can't use the oven when the refrigerator door is opened or where you can can't prepare food on the counter when a cabinet door needs to be opened.

Hot Food Countertop Next to Stove

A countertop placed conveniently adjacent to the stove can prove to be a very effective design choice if your cooking regularly involves heavy cookware or hot dishes. The close proximity of open counter space allows quick movement of heated items from the cooking area to the serving area.

Efficient Cold Storage Placement

The most efficient operation of refrigerators and freezers is accomplished when these appliances are located as far away from the stove and oven as possible while still keeping them close enough to be convenient for use. The heat produced by ovens and stoves will reduce the abilities of these appliances to keep food cold or frozen.

Lighting Plans

Lighting should be an integral part of the overall kitchen design as it progresses. Fixed lighting is best placed over areas of the kitchen where food will be prepared. The countertop can be effectively and aesthetically lit with small fixtures fitted at the base of your cabinets. Get a handle on glare by incorporating background lighting to diffuse the harsher lights.
