Whirlpool Dishwasher Smartwash Troubleshooting

The Whirlpool Corporation manufactures dishwashers that it sells under the Whirlpool and other brands, including the Sears' Kenmore brand. These include dishwashers that feature the SmartWash cycle technology, which only uses enough water and energy to clean your dishes. Whirlpool creates durable and long-lasting products, but you still may experience issues with your dishwasher. Troubleshoot issues to fix minor problems before taking the dishwasher for service.

Fill/Drying

If your SmartWash dishwasher won't fill with water, connect the water supply and turn it on. Also verify that the water valve is completely open. Clean out any suds in the dishwasher, and free the float if stuck in one position. Just push down the float to release it. Normally plasticware does not completely dry during the drying cycle. Use a rinse aid to assist with drying. Change the cycle setting to heated dry as opposed to air dry. Remove items from the bottom rack first to keep water in cups from spilling on these items. If the tub won't drain properly, see if the cycle has finished, and inspect your circuit breaker and fuse. A bad fuse has broken wires or is black. Replace the fuse if it's bad, and reset a tripped circuit breaker. Remove any kinks from the drainage hose, and remove any clogs in the disposal or drain.

Operational Issues

If the dishwasher won't start, verify that it's plugged into a live outlet. Test the outlet by plugging in another appliance. Completely close the dishwasher door to start the cycle, and pick a cycle on the display. Press the "Start/Resume" button to start washing your dishes. If the "Start/Resume" button won't light, but other buttons do, call for service. Only use fresh (nonclumping) detergent in your SmartWash dishwasher. If your dishwasher runs for a long time, it is heating the water before washing your dishes. Increase the water temperature on your hot water heater.

Residue/Dishes

If you see a residue on the dishwasher's access panel, either use less detergent or change detergents. Properly align the dishwasher with the countertop to keep condensation from forming. If you see spots or stains on your dishes, use a water filter if your water has a high mineral content or use more detergent. Always properly load the dishwasher to ensure that dishes don't bump against each other and that they clean properly. Do not block the spray arm. Check your water pressure with a water pressure gauge, which attaches directly to your water line. Whirlpool recommends a water pressure between 20 and 120 psi.

Noise/Odor

You may commonly hear buzzing, grinding or crunching sounds. Regularly run your dishwasher to reduce odors. Clean your dishwasher by placing 2 cups of vinegar on the bottom rack, and set the dishwasher to a normal cycle. Use a heated dry cycle, and see if your dishwasher is draining properly. If not, remove kinks or clogs from the drainage hose. If your dishwasher is leaking water, tighten any loose hoses, and verify that the dishwasher is level by using a bubble level.
