There are plenty of reasons for purchasing a generator. Many are directly related to your location. For example, if you are installing a shed or barn on your property where there is no electric wiring, a generator will supply all the juice that your power tools require. If you live in an area prone to electrical outages, you are wise to have a generator on hand as a back-up power source. Perhaps you have a vacation cabin that is off-the-grid. A generator can provide power for those essentials, such as light and electricity.
While people will often purchase a generator as emergency back-up, place it in their garage and never use it, the fact is that a generator can come in quite handy on a daily basis.
Sizing
Generators come in many sizes. The larger models may be mounted on wheeled frames, but they are too heavy to be really portable. The bigger generators can supply 15,000 watts of power or more--sufficient for a whole-house back-up, but excessive for many less demanding uses.
Several truly portable generators on the market are suitable for domestic use, camping and remote construction. Many portable generators are whisper-quiet, manufactured of lightweight materials, and start with an easy pull of the starter cord. They are more energy efficient, too.
There are different wattage choices within this category of generators, and your choice should be based on your intended usage and the total wattage you will require.
For instance, an electric fan set on medium might use 200 watts of energy; a coffee maker uses up to 1,200 watts. Both can be powered simultaneously by the 2000 watt generator.

Never use a generator indoors. A gas powered generator emits carbon monoxide exhaust and should never be used in an enclosed space because of the danger of CO poisoning.
Uses
To make the most of your generator, plan ahead. If you are building a shed, plug in your rechargeable drill while you are using the generator to power you circular saw. The generator consumes the same amount of fuel whether one tool or several are plugged in; just be sure that the combination of items using generator power are within the unit's wattage limits.
When camping in an RV, you can recharge the rig's batteries while recharging your cell phone, computer, rechargeable flashlights plus running the water pump, all without draining your battery power. All this is accomplished on the same gallon of gasoline.
When tent camping, your generator can keep the campsite lit and heat the water in your camping shower. You can even plug in your tiny television for a quick scan of the sports scores.
