Alternatives To Dishwashing Detergent

There are several alternatives to traditional dishwashing detergent.

To be eco-friendly and save money, you may want to find an alternative to pricey dishwashing detergent. Using products around the house you can quickly make your own detergent. Not only is it cost-effective, but you can make large batches of it and you won't ever have to worry about running out. If you don't want to make homemade dishwashing detergent, you can also use products that are designed to clean other things without having to make a special trip to the store.

Baking Soda and Salt

A quick and easy alternative to dishwashing detergent is baking soda. It's best to only use this in an actual dishwasher as you shouldn't scrub dishes with baking soda. It's quite abrasive. But, it's perfect for use in a dishwasher. Just put the baking soda in the spot that you would usually put the dishwashing detergent. It's also a very cost-effective alternative to dishwashing detergent.

Castile Soap

Liquid castile soap is gentle, mostly odorless, and is made from vegetable oil. Castile soap is extremely versatile. Not only is it an excellent alternative to dishwashing detergent, but you can also use it to wash your hair, your pet and clothing. To use castile soap in your dishwasher, combine one-half of a cup of it with one-half cup of water, one-half of a cup of white vinegar, one teaspoon of lemon juice and three teaspoons of tea tree oil. Mix the ingredients together and put them in a squirt bottle. After you have loaded the dishwasher, squirt in two tablespoons of the mixture into the proper area.

Powdered Soap

Powdered soap is another alternative to dishwashing detergent. It can be put into the soap dispenser in the dishwasher, just like any detergent. But, it can foam up quite quickly. Do not fill the dispenser all the way with the powdered soap. Only fill it to about one quarter of the way full.
