Clean Dishwasher Lines

Clean your dishwasher lines to keep debris out of the dishwasher.

The drain line on a dishwasher is connected to an air gap that is mounted near the sink. That is why you often hear the dishwasher draining or bubbling in the sink drain. The line goes to the air gap first, where it keeps water flowing by suction to the sink drain or garbage disposal. If this line is dirty or gets clogged, your dishwasher may not operate properly, your dishes may not get clean or you may clog your drain. It is important to read your owner's manual and maintain your dishwasher lines.

Instructions

1. Read your dishwasher manufacturer's instruction manual before attempting to clean the drain line. The manual may have a specific method for you to follow.

2. Remove the dishwasher line by pulling your dishwasher out and removing it from the back and then following it up to the air gap and detaching it there. You most likely will be able to pull it firmly, but gently out of the dishwasher by hand. However, there may be a clamp in place that requires you to unscrew it first before you can get the line out.

3. Take the line outside, if you can, or into a bathtub and check to see if any clogs are in the lines. If there are, you may need to use a plumber's snake to clear the line.

4. Fill a bucket or the tub with hot soapy water or a mixture of 1 Tbsp of bleach in a gallon of water, if you feel it needs to be disinfected, and plunge the line into it, allowing the line to take in the water. If you can, push the soapy water through the line with the drain snake, or you can just let the line soak for 20 minutes or so.

5. Rinse the lines out by placing one end under a faucet or garden hose and running clear water through it until the soap or bleach water mixture is gone.

6. Reattach the line as stated in your dishwasher operating manual.
