Dishwasher detergents containing phosphate were targeted.
Canada banned the sale of phosphate-laden dish detergents in 2010. Numerous U.S. cities and municipalities banned the substance both in detergents and fertilizers in an effort to minimize run-off. The United Stated government has not legislated against phosphorus detergents at this point. Phosphorus is in the form phosphate in detergents and is used to soften hard water and suspend dirt in the water.
Dishwashing Detergent
Dishwashing detergent is banned in many U.S. states if it has more than 8.7 percent phosphate. The amount of phosphate allowed in limiting states is variable from the 8.7 to zero percent allowed. Many states have opted for tertiary treatment facilities in lieu of a ban. These can remove more of the phosphates so the released water is safer for natural areas.
Laundry Detergent
Laundry detergents were targeted as a means to large-scale reduction of the phosphate introduction. In response to concerns regarding the effects in our waters, manufacturers voluntarily gave up phosphates and researched a new cleaning compound. Unfortunately, the substitution ingredient, NTA, was found to have negative potential health effects in humans. The surgeon general requested that the use of NTA be discontinued in 1970, and manufacturers went back to phosphates.
