A dishwasher with problems usually leads to frustration, since many have come to rely upon it for easy cleaning. Hotpoint dishwashers, which General Electric manufacture, generally have a good reputation, but may occasionally develop issues impacting performance, just as any appliance. An ability to troubleshoot your dishwasher's problems yourself may help save you time and money, and return you to hassle-free cleaning more quickly.
Start/Reset Button
A Hotpoint dishwasher is equipped with error messages to alert users to potential issues. If you observe the status indicator light is continuously flashing, it indicates the Start/Reset pad was pressed while the dishwasher was operating, which ends the cycle. Once the appliance drains, the light will stop flashing. Typically, this takes 90 seconds. To avoid an interruption in your dishwasher's cycle, do not hit the Start/Reset pad unless you intend to restart.
Check Water Inlet Temperature
When plates, silverware or glasses are still dirty after a cycle in your Hotpoint dishwasher, you may have an issue with the inlet water temperature. To effectively clean your dishes, the temperature should be 120 to 150 degrees. If it is too low, residue may remain on the items after a cycle. To check the temperature, turn on the hot water faucet closest to the dishwasher. Place a meat or candy thermometer in a cup and allow the water to run into the cup until you notice the temperature has stopped rising. Once you see the temperature is sufficiently high, you can start the dishwasher and turn off the faucet.
Look for Clogs
When your Hotpoint dishwasher fails to drain at the end of a cycle, the drain is usually clogged. If your dishwasher utilizes an air gap, check it for clogs. Turn off the appliance and remove the cover. Lift off the air gap's plastic cap and use a toothpick to remove any debris blocking drainage. Also, if your dishwasher shares a drain with a garbage disposal, run the disposal to make sure the drain is clear. A clog in the kitchen sink may also cause water to back up in your dishwasher. Consult a plumber if you observe your sink fails to drain properly and suspect it is linked to your dishwasher's drainage problem.
Load Dishwasher Properly
Always properly load your dishwasher. Improper loading may cause excessive noise during operation, ineffective cleaning, leftover detergent in the dispenser cups and other issues. Use the upper rack for glasses, cups and saucers and pots and pans. You can also load other odd-shaped utensils like mixing bowls and saucepans, as long as you place them facedown. Use the lower rack for plates, larger saucers and cookware. Place large items like baking racks and broiler pans on the left side. Platters, bowls and pots can go on either side. However, be sure to load items so the soiled sides face the center of the rack. Load silverware and other small utensils like spatulas and ladles in the silverware basket. Load forks and knives pointing down to avoid poking or cutting your hands during removal. Also, take care to mix spoons, knives and forks together so items do not nest inside one another and make cleaning more difficult.
