How a Garbage Disposal Works
A garbage disposal is located at the bottom of your kitchen drain. It grinds up leftover food that is washed down the drain by a force of water from the faucet. The disposal consists of a shredder that is housed within a grinding chamber. When the disposal is turned on, food is shredded into tiny little pieces that are small enough to go through the disposal and into the drainage system.
Causes
Excess food put into the disposal can clog it and cause it to fail. Similarly, food waste that is too large, such as corn husks or meat bones, should not go into the disposal. Do not put egg shells, lettuce or grease into your disposal, as these items can damage it and result in plumbing problems, notes Service Magic. Never place metal into your garbage disposal, since it can dull the grinder.
Garbage Disposal Repair
You can usually remove food that is obstructing your garbage disposal and clogging your drain. Shut off power to the disposal. Point a flashlight down into your garbage disposal to identify any large food particles that might be causing the blockage. Remove the food pieces with a pair of tongs.
When you do not spot any unusual food leftovers in your garbage disposal, the obstruction is probably in your drain. Place a bucket under the drain pipe below the sink to contain drips and debris. Detach the pipe's fittings with a wrench. Run a plumber's snake into the drain pipe to locate the blockage. Contact a plumber if you have trouble finding the clog.
Prevention
The best way to prevent plumbing problems with your garbage disposal is periodic cleanings about twice per month, according to Plumbers Los Angeles. Fill the sink with up to 4 inches of water. Pull the drain plug and switch on the disposal to push any remaining food fragments through the disposal so they exit into the drainage system.
