A clean dishwasher works effectively.
It's hard to imagine soap scum or any other type of dirt or residue building up inside an appliance that's used for cleaning. But it happens and the result of built-up soap scum in the dishwasher is an unpleasant smell and the possibility that the dishwasher's performance is being compromised. While commercial products are available for removing soap scum from surfaces such as the dishwasher, home remedies are just as effective, while saving you money.
Instructions
1. A sponge is an effective cleaning tool that doesn't scratch surfaces.
Dampen a clean sponge and sprinkle borax powder onto the sponge. Fill a bucket with plain warm water and set the bucket aside.
2. Scrub soap scum-affected areas of the dishwasher with the sponge and borax. Borax is a safe, effective scouring powder that removes soap scum from surfaces. Rinse the sponge in the bucket of water, then apply more borax and continue to scrub the surface of the inside of the dishwasher until the soap scum is gone.
3. Empty out the rinse water in the bucket and refill the bucket with fresh rinse water. Wipe down the inside of the dishwasher with a sponge and plain water to remove the borax. Dry the surface with a clean towel.
4. Pour a quarter-sized amount of lemon oil on a clean, dry cloth, then buff the lemon oil into the surface of the interior of the dishwasher. Lemon oil provides a protective coat that prevents soap scum buildup. Use another clean cloth and buff the surface again to remove any excess lemon oil so it doesn't transfer to the dishes.
