Instructions For Replacing The Fill Valve On A Ge Washing Machine

If there is no water entering the washing machine or only one of the water temperatures are working, the fill valve may need to be replaced. First check the fill hoses to make sure that they are not kinked or damaged. Instructions for replacing the fill valve on a GE washing machine are relatively the same for all washers. Get the model number from you unit so that the correct part can be purchased. Once the replacement part has been obtained, it is a matter of getting access to the old fill valve.

Safety & Preparation

Disconnect the power supply to the GE washing machine. The quickest way to do this is to unplug it from the wall. Turn off the water supply to the washer as well. Pull the washer away from the wall so that you can access the rear of the machine. Place a bucket directly under the inlet hose connections. Remove the hoses from the back of the washer where they attach to the fill valve. Place the ends of the hoses in the bucket to catch any residual water.

Access

Slide a putty knife under the control panel at each corner. Press in and pull up to release the locking tabs that hold the control panel to the top of the washer. Flip the control panel carefully forward. Unsnap the wiring harness connector from the washer to the control panel. Set the control panel out of the way.

There are two tabs or screws that hold the rear panel to the top of the washer. Using either a putty knife to press in the locking tabs, or a screwdriver to remove attaching screws, disconnect the rear panel from the top panel. Open up the lid to the washer and grab the cabinet between the tub and the cabinet. Lift it up and forward to release it from the base tabs and move the cabinet out of the way.

Remove/Replace

Locate the fill valve on the inside rear panel. Disconnect the wiring harness that is attached by pressing in on the plastic tab and pulling it off. If your model has a hose attached from the inside to the valve, use a pair of pliers to release the clamp and pull off the hose. On the outside rear panel remove the two holding bolts that attach the fill valve to the washer using a nut driver.

Position the new valve into place and attach it to the washer using the attaching bolts. Attach the inside hose to the fill valve if your model is equipped. Connect the wire connector to the fill valve. Position the washer cabinet back into place and secure it to the rear panel. Reinstall the control panel to the top of the washer. Attach the fill hose to the new fill valve and turn on the water supply. Plug the washer back into the wall outlet and push the washer back into its permanent position.
