Noise From A Ge Dishwasher

The General Electric Company (GE) offers both built-in and portable dishwashers. Dishwashers use a combination of hot water, pressure and detergent to clean your dishes. The cleaning components and water make a certain amount of noise in the process. Certain noises, however, may indicate that your dishwasher is not working properly. GE recommends that you troubleshoot these issues before contacting the company.

Normal Noises

Noises that typically issue from your GE dishwasher include water movement sounds as the spray arm releases water or as he tub fills with water. Grinding noises occur when the dishwasher shreds food particles. A popping sound is usually the detergent cup door opening up. The motor comes on during different parts of the cycle. You may hear a light thumping sound as water is pumped out of the tub.

Humming Noise

If you hear a humming sound coming from the dishwasher, it's the motor. If you do not use your dishwasher on a regular basis, the motor seal can become dry. Run the dishwasher at least once a week. You only need to run the fill and pump-out cycles. You may need to release the motor if it's frozen. Unplug your GE dishwasher and remove the kick panel. Spin the blade on the motor until it's easy to move. If the blade is broken or cracked, the entire motor assembly must be replaced. Look for water around the motor and examine the seal. If the seal is compromised, you must either rebuild the pump or purchase a new pump/motor assembly.

Rattling/Thumping

A rattling sound usually indicates that the dishes or utensil are not loaded properly. Stop the dishwasher and rearrange the dishes, if they are bumping together, to prevent them from cracking or chipping. Loading dishes too close together keeps the dishwasher from cleaning the dishes properly. Do not allow loose utensils to fall through the rack onto the bottom. A loud thumping sound could indicate that the spray arm is hitting a piece of cookware. Move the item out of the way of the arm. The motor has a plastic disc on it that can break out and create a rattling sound. You must replace the whole motor if this is the case.

Interior Components

The heating fan creates a squealing or groaning noise when the fan bearings are wearing out or rusted. Replace the fan motor. Examine the fan blades and tighten them if they are loose. The water inlet valve connects to the housing and dishwasher hoses. If this component is shaking or creating a thumping noise, disconnect it from the hoses and unscrew it from the mounting bracket. You will need to get a new valve. Sometimes food particles or debris can get caught in the pump, making a rattling or grinding noise. Unplug the dishwasher and clean out the pump with a toothpick or plastic spoon.
