Sears Kenmore Refrigerator Troubleshooting Guide

Sears' Kenmore brand offers consumers appliances like washing machines, dishwashers and refrigerators. The Kenmore refrigerators are designed to work for a long time and to be trouble-free. If you do, however, experience an issue with your Kenmore refrigerator, troubleshoot the problem before you contact the company, especially if your warranty has expired. If not, you must pay technician fees, which can get expensive.

Refrigerator Operation

If your Kenmore refrigerator is not working properly, check if it fits snugly into a three-prong outlet. You must plug your refrigerator directly into the outlet. Never plug it into an adapter or extension cord. Check to see if the unit is on. Plug a different appliance into the outlet to see if the outlet is working. Check your circuit breaker and fuses. Install a new fuse if the fuse is burnt out, and reset a tripped circuit breaker. It is normal for your motor to shut off during a defrost cycle. It is normal for your motor to run for extended period of times, especially if you have a lot of food in your refrigerator or if you open the door often. If your refrigerator is too warm, change it to a lower temperature setting.

Components

You must keep your Kenmore refrigerator doors shut to keep your foods cold and to keep your refrigerator working efficiently. If your doors will not shut properly, remove any foods or items blocking the door and push in bins. Try cleaning the door gaskets with warm, soapy water. Check if the freezer door is completely closed, if your water dispenser is not working properly. Check if the dispenser is connected to the water supply and that the water valve is in the "On" position. If your interior light does not turn on, tighten a loose bulb; replace a burned out one. Do not block the light with other items. Check if the light is turned on.

Ice Maker

Throw away old ice if it has a funny taste. Avoid storing food items in your freezer bin, and use a filter if you have water with a high mineral content. If the ice maker won't turn on or if the ice cubes are small, turn on the water supply and straighten out kinked lines. Turn the ice maker on. Remove any items jamming the ejector arm. Allow up to 24 hours for the ice maker to make ice, if you just installed it or used up all the ice. Do not connect a reverse osmosis water filtration system to your ice maker as this can affect water pressure.

Additional Concerns

It is normal for moisture to build up inside your Kenmore refrigerator if it's installed in a humid room or if you leave the door open. It is normal for your ice dispenser to leak one or two drops after using it. Always leave your glass under the dispenser for a couple of seconds after letting go of the lever. Allow up to 24 hours for water to get cold if you used a lot of water or just installed the refrigerator. Ensure that the dispenser is connected to the cold water pipe.
