Troubleshoot A Kitchenaid Quiet Care Dryer

KitchenAid Quiet Care residential dryers are prized for their noise dampening technology which allows you to launder your family's clothing in peace and quiet. KitchenAid dryers with the Quiet Care noise protection feature come with a full two year warranty that covers replacement parts and labor. If your KitchenAid Quiet Care dryer experiences a malfunction, you can easily troubleshoot the appliance to determine the source of the problem before calling to schedule service from the manufacturer.

Instructions

Dryer Doesn't Run

1. Check to ensure that the dryer is plugged into an appropriate electrical source. Note that large appliances such as clothes dryers require a 240-volt electrical outlet.

2. Check your electrical service panel for tripped circuit breakers. Identify the two circuit breaker switches that control your dryer. Move the switches into the "Off" position and count to three before moving them back to the "On" position.

3. Open and close the door to your KitchenAid dryer. Listen carefully; you should be able to hear the door latch engage. Check the latch for damage if you don't hear anything. Replace damaged latches immediately; your dryer will not operate if the door fails to close properly.

4. Turn the "Cycle Control" knob to select the desired drying cycle. Point the knob directly at the cycle indicator; if the knob is askew, the dryer may not recognize that a cycle has been selected. Press the "Start" button.

Dryer Heating Problems

5. Remove the dryer's lint screen and wash it in warm, soapy water. Dry the lint screen with a soft cloth and set it aside. Use a vacuum cleaner with a crevice attachment to vacuum out any lint trapped in the lint screen housing. Replace the lint screen; make sure that the lint screen is completely dry before returning it to the lint screen housing.

6. Push the dryer away from the wall; you will need at least 2 to 3 feet of space to be able to access the flexible exhaust hose. Remove the exhaust hose from the back of the dryer and check to ensure that there are no kinks or obstructions. Vacuum out the inside of the hose with the crevice attachment to remove any trapped lint. Reconnect the hose to the dryer.

7. Check the dryer's outside exhaust vent for obstructions. Eliminate any leaves, bird nests or lint buildup blocking the vent. Clean out the exhaust vent periodically; if the vent becomes blocked it will cause the dryer to overheat.

8. Unplug the dryer from it's power source. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the four corner screws that secure the rear panel to the rest of the dryer cabinet; set the panel and removed screws aside. Locate the thermal fuse mounted to the side of the heating element cover; the fuse is an approximately 1-inch-long, thin plastic component with two wires attached. Disconnect the wires by pulling on them gently.Turn on the digital ohmmeter and set it to read Rx1. Touch the ohmmeter probes to the sides of the thermal fuse while monitoring the ohmmeter needle; replace the fuse if the needle does not move.

9. Test the heating element if the ohmmeter shows that the thermal fuse is still working. Remove the heating element cover. Pull gently to disconnect the wires connected to the heating element. Set the ohmmeter to read Rx1 resistance again. Touch the probes to the heating element terminals while monitoring the ohmmeter needle; replace the component if the needle does not move.
