Fix A Broken Aerosol Can

Fix a broken aerosol can by clearing a blockage from the valve.

Many household products come in aerosol cans, including cleansers, deodorants, cosmetics and some foods, such as whipped topping. All are things you want instantly -- but that doesn't always happen. Sometimes the hole in the valve of the aerosol can become clogged. You press the button but nothing comes out. It's frustrating but it shouldn't ruin your day: the blockage can usually be cleared and the valve quickly restored to full functionality.

Instructions

1. Grip the valve on the top of the aerosol can between your thumb and forefinger. Pull up firmly until the valve comes off the stem.

2. Run warm water over the valve. Insert a straight pin into the hole neat the top of the valve and turn it slightly to dislodge any blockage. Insert the pin up through the bottom of the valve and rotate it slightly again.

3. Replace the valve on the stem of the can and test to see if it is now spraying. Remove the valve if the blockage has not yet cleared.

4. Soak the valve in a container filled with hot, soapy water. Use acetone if the can contains paint. Replace the valve and try again to see if the blockage has cleared.

5. Replace the valve with one from another can if the blockage persists; most aerosol cans have stems the same width and the valves will fit interchangeably.
