Remove Wine Residue From Old Bottles

Wine bottles are often reused in craft projects. Crafters will learn that wine bottles need to be thoroughly cleaned before beginning their craft. Collectors, too, find that to properly display the old wine bottle, all wine residue must be removed from inside the bottle to avoid odors and prohibit the growth of mold. Removing wine residue from old wine bottles can be accomplished easily with the use of a dishwasher powder and hot water.

Instructions

1. Fill a kettle or pitcher with hot water. The water doesn't have to be boiling, but boiling works very well. If you use boiling water, take care not to scald yourself by wrapping a dish towel around the kettle or pitcher to cover your hand. You can use the hottest water from your tap for convenience.

2. Pour about ¼ cup of any dishwasher detergent powder through the bottle opening, using a funnel if you have one. Put the funnel spout into the neck of the wine bottle, and pour the detergent through the funnel. You can also push a dishwasher tablet into the neck of the bottle with a dinner knife. Cascade Complete and Cascade All-in-1 are good products for cleaning wine residue.

3. Pour the hot water into the old wine bottle through the funnel or neck of the bottle. Fill the bottle to the very top.

4. Set the bottle beside the sink and allow it to sit overnight. In the morning give the bottle two or three good shakes to knock any remaining residue loose into the water.

5. Pour the detergent water from the old wine bottle and rinse the bottle with clean, hot water from the tap. Allow the wine bottle to air-dry.
