The Life Of Household Appliances

The dishwasher ranks as one of the shortest-lived appliances on average.

That old refrigerator in the basement may still be chugging away after three decades, and yet the year-old washing machine is gasping for life. Ascertaining the general life expectancy of household appliances entails tricky statistical averaging.

Calculations

The life expectancy statistics of household appliances is based on averages. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) compiles a study of the lifespan of housing components every few years. The NAHB realizes that the life expectancies of appliances depends greatly on the level of maintenance, frequency of use, quality of installation and other variables.

Development

The NAHB Study of Life Expectancy of Housing Components reveals that the lifespan of some appliances and home components has increased during the past 35 years, while others have sharply decreased. Reasons for an increase in life expectancy include improved technology and better products.

Statistics

According to the NAHB study, appliances with the shortest life expectancies include the trash compactor at six years and the dishwasher and microwave oven at nine years. The appliance with the longest life span is the gas range, at 15 years. Close behind are the clothes dryer and refrigerator, with average life spans of 13 years.
