Equipment Checklist For A Concession Stand

Concession stands feature equipment for making and selling such items as hot dogs, popcorn and hamburgers.

People operate concession stands for various reasons. Concession stands at school sporting events support athletic programs. Concession stands at fairs, carnivals and community events provide extra income for individuals or organizations. Whatever the reason for opening a concession stand, take time to inventory what equipment you will need. Then research where you can purchase or rent the equipment or get someone to donate it.

Food Preparation Equipment

Determine what the food menu will be to determine what equipment you'll need. Based on the menu, some food preparation equipment items may include griddles, a deep fryer, a microwave, hot dog rollers, a popcorn popper or a snow cone machine. Find a sturdy prep table. Stainless steel is best. Stay away from equipment that uses 220 volts or more, because most locations don't provide sufficient outlets. Decide between purchasing a drinking fountain or using bottled drinks. Research auction houses, local dealers or Internet sites for needed equipment (see Resources).

Food Storage Equipment

Purchase either a refrigerator and freezer, or consider a walk-in cooler. Another less expensive option would be to simply bring an ice chest each day and store food at home. This decision depends on how large the concession stand will be.

Cleaning Equipment

Use as much disposable equipment as possible to limit the need for cleanup. Most city or county health inspectors, however, require a sink for cleaning not only equipment and cooking utensils, but also hands for food preparation. Decide if a dishwasher is necessary.

Small Ware Products

Make a list of smaller equipment needed for a concession stand. Include squeeze bottles, salt and pepper shakers and napkin dispensers in this list.

Disposable Products

Finalize the equipment list with disposable products. Provide napkins, paper cups, paper plates, plastic utensils and ketchup and mustard packets. Decide on where you'll store these products in the concession stand.
