Reattach A Countertop

Faux stone countertops attach with silicone adhesive similar to natural stone.

Countertop installation varies by the type of material. The most common type of material is laminate, a wood particle board covered with a veneer. Laminate countertops are anchored with drywall screws through corner beams on the cabinet framing. Stone or cement countertops simply rest on top of the cabinetry using the weight of the material and some silicone adhesive for stability. Reattaching a countertop only takes a few minutes with the proper tools.

Instructions

1. Place the countertop on top of the structure to dry fit the unit.

2. Measure the distance from the bottom edge of the corner wood posts, which are triangle pieces of wood anchored to the cabinet frame just below the corners of the countertop, to the base of the countertop. Measure the thickness of the countertop. Add the two measurements together.

3. Remove the countertop. Apply a thick bead of silicone adhesive along the upper edge of the cabinet frame where the countertop will touch the frame. Lower the countertop into place.

4. Drill pilot holes through the corner posts into the base of the laminate countertop with a drill and 1/8-inch drill bit. The pilot holes should be no longer than the measurement from Step 2 minus 1/2 to 1/4 inch. Wrap a piece of tape around the drill bit at the proper measurement as a depth guide.

5. Drive drywall screws of the same length as the depth of the pilot holes with a drill and a screwdriver drill bit.

6. Apply a thin bead of silicone adhesive along the joint between the countertop backsplash and the wall. Smooth out the bead and remove excess by running a damp finger along the joint.
