Put On An Oven Door

A new oven door can give your kitchen a fresh look.

Before you can use your new oven, you must put on the door. Most ovens have a simple door hinge mechanism that locks and unlocks to allow the door to slide on and off. Self-cleaning ovens may also have a set of metal clips or brackets that must be removed before you can take the door off of the hinges. Check your oven's owner's manual for your make and model's specifications. If you have misplaced the manual, you can download a digital copy from most oven manufacturers' websites.

Instructions

1. Shut off the power to your oven at the home's circuit breaker box. If you have a gas oven, close the gas shut-off valve.

2. Take off the old door, if applicable to your oven. Skip this step if this is a new installation. Lower the door until it is all the way open. Open the hinge locks with a flathead screwdriver to release the door. If you have a self-cleaning oven, remove the metal clamps or brackets that hold the hinges in place with a Phillips screwdriver. Close the door partially until it is in the "broil" position. With a firm hold on each side of the door, lift up and slide the door off of the oven's hinge arms.

3. Hold up the new door and match up the slots on the door with the hinge arms on the oven. Place the door onto the hinge arms and lower the door until it is all the way open. Use your flathead screwdriver to move the hinge locks back to the locked position. Replace any brackets or clamps that were removed in Step 2 if you have a self-cleaning oven.

4. Make sure the door fits properly by opening and shutting it a few times. Pay attention to any points where the door seems to grab or catch on something. Lift the door off and re-install it if you notice any problems.

5. Switch the circuit breaker for your oven back on and turn on the gas supply, if necessary.
