Get White Residue Off Dishes

Dishwashers save time but only if they work properly.

A dishwasher can save a lot of time in the kitchen, particularly if you have a large family or do a lot of entertaining. However, a dishwasher that leaves behind white residue on your dishes and glassware, may require extra time to rinse off your dishes. The residue may be caused by a number of issues. Hard water can cause mineral deposits to form residue on dishes if the water is not hot enough. Other causes include using too much detergent, detergent not dissolving properly, or the dishwasher may need servicing.

Instructions

Removing Existing Residue

1. Mix together equal parts of white vinegar and hot water in a large pot or sink.

2. Place dishes and glasses in the solution and allow them to soak for 30 minutes.

3. Rinse the dishes and glasses with clear water and dry.

Prevention

4. Turn on the hot water tap and allow the water to run for one minute to reach the maximum temperature. If possible, check the temperature on your hot water heater or, alternatively, test your water's temperature by placing a candy thermometer in a glass of hot water from the tap. Dishwashers operate most efficiently if the water temperature is above 130 degrees.

5. Load the dishwasher, use the recommended amount of dishwashing detergent and add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to the dishwasher's rinse cycle.

6. Attach the solid rinse aid according to the manufacturer's directions.

Monthly Maintenance

7. Turn on the hot water tap at your kitchen sink and allow the water to run for one minute to reach the maximum temperature.

8. Place one cup of white vinegar in a bowl in the top rack or at the bottom of the dishwasher.

9. Run the dishwasher through a normal cycle without adding detergent or dishes.
