Remove Agitates On A Hotpoint Washer Machine

Repairs to the bell housing, transmission or tub on a washer machine requires removing the agitate from the tub. The agitate, or agitator, is the piece in the center of the tub that rotates clothes through the wash cycle. Removing the agitate on a Hotpoint washer machine depends on the age of the washer. Older washers fasten the agitate directly to the shaft, while newer ones do not. The agitate has splines on the inside that fit over spline on the shaft. This makes for a snug fit that may require some force when pulling it out of the washer.

Instructions

1. Unplug the GE Hotpoint washer power cord from the electrical outlet and open the washer lid.

2. Insert a flat-head screwdriver in the seam between the agitator cap and the top of the agitator. Twist the screwdriver handle to pry the cap off and remove it from the agitator.

3. Look inside the center of the agitator for a bolt head. Older model Hotpoints have a bolt securing the agitator to the top of the agitator shaft. Newer models simply fit over the splines of the agitator shaft.

4. Remove the bolt with a socket wrench, if your washer uses the bolt. Place your fingers between the bottom of the agitator and the tub. Lift the agitator off the shaft and out of the washer. The agitator is tight on the shaft and it may be necessary to rock the agitator back and forth as you pull up. Keep your head away from the agitator in case it pops free suddenly.

5. Tie a rope under the vanes of the agitator and around a piece of 4-foot long, 2-by-4 board. Use the board to lift the agitator if it is difficult to pull up. Once you break the water suction that may be freezing the agitator, remove the board and rope and lift the agitator out of the washer.
