Granite countertops should be leveled properly during installation.
Granite is one of the most frequently used kitchen countertop materials installed in homes. Granite tops are heavy and durable when installed, and fragile during transport. To ensure that your granite counter is installed properly, you'll need to make sure it is leveled, carried and adhered properly throughout the installation.
Preparation
Before a granite top can be installed, the kitchen needs to be ready to receive it. This means removing any old counters and appliances, and installing the new stove if applicable. Have the dishwasher, sink and faucet on hand; they will be installed after the granite is in place.
Level the cabinets and place plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) on top of the cabinets, between the stiles, to support the granite once it is in place. Screw this down to the cabinets to ensure it does not move.
Proper Handling
Granite slabs are extremely heavy, and when properly supported very strong and durable. Granite must be stored, carried and transported in an upright, vertical position when it is not being supported horizontally. A minimum of two people should lift granite, and when it is not being transported or set on the cabinets, it should be held upright with 2-by-4 supports to keep it from cracking under its own weight.
Proper Adhering
Clean the edges of the cabinets where the granite will be adhered to ensure no dust or debris gets in the way. Squeeze a very thin line of adhesive around the edges of the cabinets; too much adhesive will be pressed out by the weight of the granite. Lift the granite up above the counters one piece at a time and get it into position before gently lowering it onto the adhesive. The weight of the stone will hold it in place while the adhesive is drying.
