The grates on top of a kitchen stove support cookware above the burners and evenly distribute heat from flames during cooking. Without regular cleaning, grease, liquids, food, and dust can accumulate on the grates. This buildup will burn whenever you heat the grates, resulting in smoke. Additionally, the uneven heating surface will cause food to cook unevenly. The grates may also become stained or pitted. Cleaning the grates doesn't require special cleaning tools. Typically, you can remove the buildup and keep the grates clean with supplies found in most kitchens.
Instructions
1. Turn off your kitchen stove and wait for it to cool.
2. Fill your kitchen sink with hot water and enough mild dish detergent to make the water sudsy. Place a lint-free microfiber cloth or a sponge and a nonabrasive scrubbing pad in the water.
3. Remove the grates from the stove and place them side-by-side on the kitchen counter. Place the first grate into the water and soak it approximately 20 minutes.
4. Wash the grate with the cloth or sponge. If necessary, scrub it gently with a nonabrasive scrubbing pad or brass wool to remove food or stains. If you need a more abrasive cleaning tool, sprinkle baking soda on the stain, and then scrub.
5. Rinse the grate under hot water thoroughly.
6. Wipe the grate as dry as possible with a cloth. Set it aside.
7. Repeat the cleaning process with the next grate. Clean each grate one at a time.
8. Return the grates to the top of your kitchen stove.
