If you own a GE refrigerator and the ice maker no longer works, you can repair or replace it. There are different reasons an ice maker fails on a GE appliance. In some cases, the water supply has become obstructed or the hose leaks. Other times, the indicator switch which tells the device to make or stop making ice is jammed or broken. Regardless of the malfunction, you need to remove your GE ice maker.
Instructions
1. Unplug your GE refrigerator. Electrical appliances should never be worked on while powered on. Then, shut off the water supply to the ice maker. The shut off valve is located near the dishwasher, under the kitchen sink, or the water heater.
2. Remove the shelving under the GE ice maker and the ice tray. Gently pry-off the front panel with your fingers or use a flat-head screwdriver. Don't pull too hard or you may break the panel.
3. Shine a flashlight into the freezer and locate the mounting screws. Remove the mounting screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Ask someone to assist you during this step to hold the GE ice maker in place while you unfasten the screws. Pull the ice maker partly out of the freezer.
4. Feel or look at the back of the ice maker for electrical wires. Pull the connector out of the GE ice maker with your hands. If it sticks, use a set of needle-nose pliers to unplug the connector. Pull it completely out of the freezer. Leave the water supply shut off and plug the refrigerator back in until you repair or replace the ice maker.
