Clean A Dishwasher That Leaves Calcium Buildup On Your Dishes

Calcium and mineral deposits in the dishwasher, caused by hard water, may leave a chalky-white residue on dishes and flatware. Dishwashers with calcium buildup and mineral deposits may have a rough, white coating on the interior. You can scratch off the coating with your fingernail, but it doesn't wash off with water. Removing the mineral buildup from your dishwasher will help eliminate the calcium film from your clean dishes.

Instructions

1. Pour 1 gallon of white vinegar into the bottom of an empty dishwasher. Alternatively, place 1/2 cup of citric acid powder in the detergent cup.

2. Allow the vinegar to soak in the dishwasher for 1 hour so it can break down the calcium buildup around the bottom sprayers. Soaking isn't required if you use citric acid powder.

3. Run the dishwasher on the full cycle. The hot water and acid in the vinegar or powder will break down the calcium deposits, and the rinse cycle will rinse away the buildup.

4. Wipe the inside of the dishwasher with a damp rag after the wash and rinse cycles end, but before the interior of the dishwasher cools down and dries.
