Dishwasher Spray Arm Not Turning

A malfunctioning dishwasher can lead to arguments.

A dishwasher spray arm is propelled by the force of water channeled from the appliance's motor and pump. The spray arm spins around at a rapid pace, covering your dirty dishes with scalding hot water and detergent. Some dishwashers have an additional spray arm around the upper tier to ensure dishes on both levels are thoroughly cleaned. Dishwasher arms can malfunction and stop turning, resulting in poor cleaning results. Thankfully, spray arms can usually be restored to full working order without professional help.

Lower Rack

Take out the lower dish rack from your dishwasher, which will allow you to access the spray arm and identify what is causing the obstruction. Turning the arm gently with your hand will allow you to see if it can move freely or if it is impeded. Remove any debris that's impeding the arm from turning, and gently pull the tip of the spray arm in an upward direction. The arm should freely vibrate rather than snap back into place. Examine the seams of the spray arms for any signs of damage. Cracks in the spray arms' seams can result in reduced water pressure and ineffectual cleaning. Split seams can also result in dishwasher leaks.

Spray Tower

Some dishwashers have a circular spray tower situated at the end of the lower spray arm, which can be pulled up by hand to test if it is working properly. Let the tower fall back down again once pulled up. It should slide down without any problems. Unscrew the tower if its portal does not settle back into position. You'll need to remove any debris that may be restricting its movement, and wipe with a clean cloth.

Upper Rack

Test whether the upper spray arm of the dishwasher is working by repeating the steps for the lower spray arm. The upper spray arms on some machines receive water through an inlet tube that connects to the spray arm once the dishwasher rack is pushed back. See if this tube is properly aligned with the spray arm if the upper arm is not turning.

Cleaning

Spray arms sometimes need a thorough cleaning to remove any minor debris that may be preventing the arm from turning. Spray arms can be removed by first unscrewing the spray tower and then taking out the bolt at the center of the spray arm. The arms on older dishwashers can usually be removed by gently rocking the arm until it comes loose. Wash the spray arm in hot water to remove and debris or sticky residues.

Cutlery

A jammed spray arm can often be caused by a poorly-loaded dishwasher rather than an internal malfunction. Avoid overloading the cutlery basket so that knives and forks are wedged in between other items. The spray arms eject water at extremely high pressure and can dislodge an item of cutlery that's not properly loaded. These items can then get jammed in the spray arm mechanism and prevent it from functioning.
