Troubleshoot Farm Implements

Proactive maintenance of farm equipment is preferable to frequent repair or replacement.

Implements are the devices with which farmers interface with the soil. They are his bread and butter. Still, tractor attachments and other cultivation tools are expensive investments. In order to get a return on them, growers aim to increase their longevity as much as possible. As with an automobile, dishwasher or air-conditioning system, prevention of breakdown is the best scenario for hard-working farm implements. Failing that, early intervention is preferred to the costly options of major repair or replacement.

Instructions

1. Obtain the operator manuals and specification sheets for each attachment. These are available online or from your equipment dealer. If you are in possession of these, unearth them from your archives and make sure they are easily accessible.

2. Compile all service and repair records in like fashion. If you have items still under warranty, you want to take advantage of professional service when available.

3. Keep to the servicing schedule as prescribed by the manufacturer. Perform regular tune-ups in accordance with the spec sheet if you are mechanically astute. Changing oil for engines and hydraulic systems should be executed at regular intervals.

4. Measure each implement's performance with reference to your manual and specifications. For example, if a hay rake specifies a width up to 32 feet and its swath does not exceed 24 feet, this merits further examination.

5. Look out for uncommon noises and smells; watch the attachment to make sure it is distributing its power evenly; and develop a feel for when it is operating normally or not. For instance, if your manure spreader is calibrated to spread thinly, you will be carrying a heavy volume for a while. You will notice if your tractor is exerting less power early on. This indicates a problem.

6. Examine the harvested crops. If there is a pattern of the grain head still attached to the stalk, there may be a malfunction in the combine's threshing component.
