My Ge Dishwasher Is Making A Whirring Noise

Identify the cause of whirring in your General Electric dishwasher.

When you own a dishwasher, you expect to hear certain noises during the wash cycle as the motor-powered water jets blast food residue off plates, cutlery and cooking utensils. Most sounds are normal and do not require further investigation unless the dishwasher begins to malfunction or produce poor cleaning results. Pinning down the cause of a whirring noise, whether normal or not, involves ruling out all the potential causes one by one.

Motor Fan Is Running

The dishwasher's motor generates heat while it powers the appliance. A fan, located near the motor, provides a blast of cooling air to prevent the dishwasher from overheating. The motor makes a whirring or humming noise while it runs, but the sound should stop when the cycle ends.

Soft Food Disposal Is Running

GE dishwashers with a built-in soft food disposal unit can grind up food scraps into smaller pieces ready to be flushed out of the appliance. The disposal makes a whirring and humming noise while it is running, but the noise should only appear in short bursts and not continue for the duration of the wash cycle.

Dishwasher Is Draining

The dishwasher fills and drains several times during each cycle, making a whirring, humming or growling sound each time. The noise may be more apparent if your dishwasher is uninsulated for sound. The sound is intermittent, lasts a few seconds and appears approximately 12 times during the average cycle.

Dishes Are Moving in the Dishwasher

You might notice whirring or rattling sounds from your dishes as the water jets wash off food residue. Ensure everything in the dishwasher is properly positioned, and check that there is nothing hanging through the shelves and striking the spinning jet arms. This particular noise should disappear when you add new dishes.
