Shine Bathroom Counter Tops

Even the shiniest new bathroom countertop may become dull from use.

Over time bathroom counters collect a soapy scum buildup or become scratched and dull. Laminate, Formica and granite countertops all experience a buildup of lime. Use environmentally friendly and safe products you can find around your home to strip away the dulling residue and restore a like-new shine to your countertops.

Instructions

1. Remove everything from the countertop, and wipe away dust, soap residue and other obvious dirt with a soft cloth dampened only with water.

2. Use lime buildup remover around faucets and places where white areas indicate lime buildup, which will most likely occur if your countertop is prone to standing water from leaks. Spray the lime-covered spots. Wipe away the lime after five minutes. Repeat if necessary until the lime dissolves.

3. Mix a vinegar and water solution by putting equal amounts of vinegar and water into a spray bottle. If you have a granite or marble countertop, substitute rubbing alcohol for this solution, but do not put it in a spray bottle.

4. Spray the entire countertop with your solution, and wipe away immediately with a fresh soft cloth. If you are using rubbing alcohol on a stone countertop, apply with a cloth instead of spraying. Repeat until you remove all obvious residue.

5. Look for any stained areas. If you find them, add just enough water to a spoonful of baking soda to make it pasty. Use this baking soda paste to scrub the areas gently for a minute or two or until the stain disappears. You probably cannot completely eradicate the stain. Go over all areas you used baking soda on one more time with the vinegar/water solution to remove the residue. For marble and granite tops alcohol is a desirable substitute.

6. Moisten a fresh soft cloth with a few drops of dishwasher rinse aid, and use it to polish the countertop using circular motions. You won't need much to notice a glossy finish. Polish once more with a dry clean cloth, and let the rinse aid dry for a couple of minutes.
