Several models of plastic-tub dishwashers can help with your after-dinner chores.

While many higher-end dishwashers include stainless-steel wash tubs, many budget models have tubs made of plastic. Consumer Reports notes that although the plastic may stain, a tub made from this material should last longer than you will own the dishwasher. Several manufacturers offer appliances with plastic tubs.

Amana ADB1000AWD

This model offers five wash cycles and can hold 10 place settings. It has gray, vinyl racks and a white, plastic tub. The government's Energy Star program estimates it will cost $33 a year to operate the ADB1000AWD with an electric water heater. This model has a silver finish, with a manufacturer's suggested cost of $309 in 2010. It is also available in black (ADB1000AWB), bisque (ADB1000AWW) and white at a suggested cost of $279 as of 2010.

Frigidaire FFBD2403LB

You can fit 12 place settings in this black dishwasher, which had a manufacturer's suggested cost of $299 in December 2010. It offers three wash cycles, a food disposer and PVC-coated racks. The tub is made of white plastic. Expect to spend about $24 a year to operate it with a gas water heater. The dishwasher is also available in white (FFBD2403LW).

Whirlpool DP1040XTXB

This portable dishwasher provides five wash cycles, four stainless-steel wash arms and a high-temp wash option. The DP1040XTXB can hold 12 place settings. The manufacturer suggested a retail price of $699 in 2010 for this black dishwasher, which is also available in white (model DP1040XTXQ). The government estimates it will cost $32 a year to operate with an electric water heater.

Kenmore Model 13743

Nylon-coated wire racks accompany the plastic tub in this dishwasher, which is finished with stainless steel on the outside. It features automatic temperature control and an upper rack you can remove. The Kenmore Model 13743 offers six wash cycles and a delayed-wash setting. Expect to spend $26 a year to operate it with a gas water heater. Kenmore's regular price for this item was $820 in December 2010.

It has an estimated annual operating cost of $32 with an electric water heater. This model is finished in stainless steel with black trim and has a suggested price of $399 as of 2010. It also comes at a lower price in white, bisque, silver and black.

Frigidaire FFBD2407LB

There's room for up to 14 place settings in this black dishwasher, which has a white plastic tub. It has four wash cycles, a food disposer and PVC-coated racks. Frigidaire suggested a retail price of $349 for this model in December 2010. This dishwasher also can be purchased in white, bisque, silver and stainless steel finishes. Expect to spend $24 a year to operate the FFBD2407LB with a natural gas water heater.

Kenmore Model 15239

You can delay the start of this dishwasher's cycles by two, four or six hours. This black dishwasher includes a stemware holder in the upper rack to protect wine glasses. Kenmore Model 15239 offers four wash cycles and room for 14 place settings. It has a regular price of $350, and you can expect to spend $33 a year to operate it with an electric water heater.
