Clean Up Vomit On Furniture

Vomit can easily stain upholstery if it's not cleaned properly.


When either a person or an animal becomes sick with a stomach virus, it is possible that vomit will get on furniture. No matter whether it's upholstery or furniture with a hard surface, it is easy to clean up vomit with a simple homemade cleaning solution. However, it is important to remember that vomit contains virus that can be passed on, so if the one who got ill is a person, it's best to take some precautions so you don't get sick too.


Instructions


1. Put on a pair of cleaning gloves. This will protect you from getting any germs on your hands.


2. Pick up the excess vomit, using paper towels. Dispose of any paper towels and other disposable items used during the cleaning process as quickly as possible to stop any spread of germs.


3. Soak up any stray liquid remaining in the furniture with paper towels. Hold down the paper towel firmly with your gloved hand. This may take several paper towels.


4. Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch over the stain to help absorb any remaining moisture. Let sit for approximately 15 minutes, and then vacuum the remaining powder.


5. Clean the area of germs by using either a store bought cleaning agent appropriate for the type of furniture, or use a homemade recipe. For fabrics and upholstery, use 2 cups of water, 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid, and 1 tablespoon white vinegar. Mix them in a plastic spray bottle, and shake well to create foam at the top of the bottle. For wooden or other solid surfaces, use a gallon of water and 1 1/2 cups chlorine bleach. The bleach will kill virus.


6. Spray the area with the cleaning solution. Scrub upholstery and fabrics, using a soft cloth. Wipe wooden surfaces, using a soft cloth. Wipe and blot away any remaining residue, using a clean cloth.


7. Rinse the area, using a damp cloth. Blot away any excess water from upholstery with a dry cloth. Wipe wood furniture with a damp cloth, and then wipe dry.


8. Cover the area with a dry towel and allow it to dry fully. Blot with the towel if excess water remains.
