Whirlpool Appliance Troubleshooting

Whirlpool makes kitchen appliances through the company's Maytag and KitchenAid brands.

Whirlpool makes a range of home appliances, including dishwashers, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers and ovens. Troubleshooting is a useful way of solving minor technical difficulties that stop the appliance working. The electricity supply and set-up of the appliance often cause trouble, especially if they are incorrectly configured. It's good practice to troubleshoot your malfunctioning appliance at home before calling a technician, you might save time and money if you solve the problem.

Instructions

1. Check the appliance's electrical outlet. The power cord might be disconnected or loose in the outlet. Make sure all three prongs of the plug are completely inserted and the outlet is switched on. Some homes have electrical outlets with individual power switches. Disconnect all extension cords and plug the appliance in directly.

2. Test the electrical outlet with another small appliance. Change the fuse or reset the breaker protecting the circuit if the outlet doesn't supply electricity. Call an electrician if you are unsure change a blown fuse. The power to the appliance is cut off when a fuse blows or a breaker trips.

3. Ensure the control panel is programmed correctly. Carefully re-enter your instructions, making sure to include all necessary options. Hit "Start" when you are ready to begin. You may have to hold the "Start" button for a few seconds on some models of washing machine or dryer.

4. Check the pipes at the back of the appliance for kinks. Water won't enter or drain from the appliance unless you lay the pipes correctly. Make sure the hot and cold water shut-off valves are both open, if necessary. Check the gas supply shut-off is open behind the appliance and at your home's master shut-off valve.

5. Remove the child lock function on your Whirlpool appliance. Hold down the "Lock" button until the appliance indicates the lock is cancelled on the LCD display. The child lock restricts almost all of the appliance's features until it is disabled. You can re-activate the child lock by repeating this step.

6. Disconnect the power and wait 30 seconds, the internal computer will reset during this time. Problems programming the appliance often arise from a software or computer failure. Resetting the computer clears the problem so you can try your appliance again.
